    Just got this mower. I love it. There is a delay like he said when trying to reverse which is kind of a pain in the butt. You just have to be patient with it. That wouldn't prevent me from purchasing it again. I'd buy it again and I'm very impressed with it overall.

    Picked this one at Costco for $500 with two batteries plus a Costco 8 year warranty on the battery and mower. Coming from mowing with a 12 yr old craftsman that was held together with zip ties, band clamps and duct tape, this was like a spaceship. Worth it!

    I recently bought this mower and...I love it! Its actually enjoyable to mow the lawn now. I like how its lighter and so much easier to control, including stowing in my limited-space garage. Its definetly worth the money and hopefully will be the last mower I ever need to buy.

    Going on 3 years with the 60v version of this mower. The 2 points that you mentioned here you will quickly get over and get use to the slight hesitation when first starting. When I engage the self propell I'm already beginning to push it so you don't notice it really. As for the locking up, if you release the self propell about a foot or so before turning that does not happen. I love the mower so much that I sold my Honda Hrx217. By the way, switch the mulch blade for the included high lift blade. You will get a much better cut. Also, being the blade is so thin I sharpen it every month with that Arnold wheel that attaches to a drill. I leave the blade on the mower while doing that as well.

    I just ran this for the first time today and yeah the things you said you hated about it was true. However you can just let go of the accellerator a few seconds before you turn, the momentum should allow you to get to where you need to be, and by then the wheels will unlock and you're free to turn. That was the adjustment that I did within 15 minutes of using it and there's no problem as far as that's concerned

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, it's an adjustment of old habits, not a show stopper for sure. I now have about 7 or 8 tools from Greenworks... I've drank the Greenworks Green Kool-Aid...

    I used my Greenworks Pro 80V the first time a few days ago. It's awesome. While there is a slight pause when drive mode is engaged, it is so brief that it does not affect the performance at all for me. I prefer rear drive because of superior traction, especially going up a grade. I bought my mower from Costco online. It was delivered to my garage door, wonderfully packaged. Assembly is a snap. While the Costco package comes with a single-battery charger, it took under an hour to charge each battery from new. Not a problem at all. When you're finished mowing, it stows safely in your garage or shed by folding the handle and rotating the mower vertically. I'm just so very pleased with this mower.

      I agree, it's pretty slick. I had zero intentions of "going green" any time soon but am very pleased with the product, the power, and overall simplicity. So far my best purchase of the year!

      It takes less than 45 minutes to charge the 4Ah battery and about 25 minutes for the 2Ah one ! I did my whole lawn using only 20% of the 4Ah battery.

    I have the Costco version of this. It also comes with a high lift blade if that helps anyone. So far I am very happy with it. It's definitely overkill for my lawn, but for $100 more than the base EGO push model along with Costco's perks, I decided to give it a shot. I've noticed the self propel issue as well on my first cut. What I did on my second cut was I just let go of the trigger about a foot or so from where I wanted to end and just push over that last bit. Didn't have any issues with it on that second cut. I think for most people you will be able to get used to it and figure out what works for you.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Costco version should be identical except for the single bay charger... Agree each mowing getting more used to letting off on the self propel to ease with turning or pulling backwards. I like it so far!

    I have this mower as well and it is a really great. Moved from gas to electric. But there are things I have not gotten used to yet. 1.) The speed control is easy to bump and change when you turn. I would prefer a less continuous control with settings that click in place or a lower profile knob design, 2.) it takes a while for the self-propelled clutch to disengage so moving forward and then pulling back is not fluid and 3.) while the mower is supposed to change over batteries automatically, the mower sometimes stops and it takes a while (15-30sec) for the system to switch batteries. These are minor inconveniences for a really great mower. Quiet, powerful, and takes up hardly any space in the garage. No oil or gas to worry about.

      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree on all points. I’ve however not had the issues with the battery switch over. I have had it turn off when my bay is near full. Not sure if there is a sensor or if this is a coincidence.

    I own this mower. The mower works well. Three issues that are less than good, first, the control for self propell seems to constantly shift; second, the mower stops occasionally and you must take out and put the safety key back in; and third , you can pinch your figures by the hand controls if you don't watch out.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing your experience. I don't have the self shifting issue with self-propel but I wish it was truly more variable than it seems. The intermediate stopping happened a few times to me and it seemed to me like the batteries were losing contact or something, mine would restart w/out pulling the safety key, i'd just wiggle the batteries and it would start up. Haven't experienced the pinching either but see how that might happen. Thanks for watching and commenting!

    The key to disengaging the rear wheels is to manually push the mower forward a few inches after turning off the self propel drive. If you try to turn or back up immediately after turning off self propel without pushing the mower forward, the rear wheels will remain locked. Not sure if other mowers are like that, but it's just one of those things you get used to.

    I bought the 25" dual blade version of this self propelled mower. Its a very powerful mower. I do not notice a lag when engaging the self propelled feature. I do however notice the rear wheels staying locked for a couple seconds after disengaging the self propelled handle. It can be annoying but I've learned to just push it forward a bit after releasing the self propelled handle and they disengage. I have a thick lawn and it requires the *turbo* mode for much of it. If I don't engage turbo mode it results in uneven cutting. So turbo mode is great but sucks up quite a bit of battery. One negative is the weight distribution. It holds 2 batteries and will automatically switch to the 2nd battery when the 1st one dies. Great feature for sure. However the weight of the batteries plus the rear wheel drive can cause the mower to do a sort of wheelie when first engaging self propelled. So if you get the 25" version you will need to adjust to the mower's mannerisms and idiosyncrasies. Its a very solid mower and if you bag the grass clippings, it's fantastic. Best bagger ever. Just be aware there's a learning curve.

      Same here regarding the self-propelled feature - I push it forward for just a foot or two after disengaging the the real wheels in turn unlock and you can back up to do a tight turn as needed.

  • @thechaoscoefficient
    @thechaoscoefficient 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I absolutely love rear wheel drive mowers. If you are mowing up hill or just driving the mower up a hill you definitely want rear drive. That way when the front wheels lose grip as the front wheels down force is decreased going up a steep hill you don't loose grip at the rear drive wheels. It also makes it easier to do a fast tight u-turn by rocking back on the back wheels and turning while it's in drive.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      We’ve learned to appreciate the rear wheel as well although because this mower is lightweight my kids end up letting the front come up too much and mow a bit uneven but works well for me.

  • @shadowman3320

    I just used the same mower for the first time and I mostly loved it. When I disengage the drive and pull back, the wheels are locked. I guess it takes a while to release, but I'll get used to it. I bought it on the Greenworks site and it came with the single charger, a 4 amp and a 2 amp battery. No problem for me, since it only takes 20 minutes to mow my lawn. I'm looking forward to buying the string trimmer too.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agree on the delayed disengage of the rear tires. Feel like there could have been a better solution but we’ve gotten used to it. I have the string trimmer and blower combination both work great. Here is my review of the blower. Still need to review the string trimmer. th-cam.com/video/KPVBUpT7dlU/w-d-xo.html

    • @gilramsey3518
      @gilramsey3518 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Disengage the drive, keep pushing the mower forward manually for a foot or two then you can pull it back or do a tight turn. When you keep pushing forward for just a bit it after you disengage the self propelled feature that unlocks the wheels. You get better at with a little practice.

  • @GeekyDad84

    Just ran across your video based on my obsessive researching on most things I like or buy. I've had multiple GW 80v products for a few years now; backpack blower, string trimmer, hedge trimmer, 18" chainsaw. My toro push mower, I got 11 or 12 cutting seasons out of it, just had it's first major mechanic issue last week. So, since I'm well invested into the GW 80v world, I took the leap of faith and ordered the 21" gen 2 mower. Man, you couldn't be more correct on the hap-hazard layout of their website. I'm a super techy, geeky, kinda guy and I got confused on what model I was buying, they have 2 different Gen 2 models(push vs self propelled at the same price but with different battery combos) and I ended up with the gen 2 21" push mower instead of the gen 2 21" self propelled, none self pace, model. Thankfully they have a reasonable return policy and it only cost me about $45 to ship the first one I ordered back, but it definitely tripped me up. Totally my fault, but I definitely think they've got a lot of room for improvement on the UI/UX of their website.
    I purchased their 60v self propelled mower last year for my parents to use around their garden. I fell in love with how easy it was to adjust and the folding feature, to help keep the deck clean, was one of those, it's some simple and so helpful, I couldn't wait to get one for myself. I almost pulled the trigger on their newer 80v 25" deck model, but thankfully saw another reviewer who mentioned that it doesn't offer side discharge. So, that was a bit of a deal breaker for me.

    I got the mower from Costco with the $100.00 discount and 8 year warranty on batteries which is great since batteries are expensive to replace once they die. I do wish that the battery compartment door would stay open on its own. It a pain to keep it propped up with one hand and then try to remove the batteries with the other hand, especially since the batteries are not light!

    Got mine at Best Buy and it's the same one as the Costco version. I've noticed the wheels tend to lock up when I disengage the transmission to pull it backwards or make a turn. I found out through trial and error that giving it a slight nudge forward before I pull it backwards or turn it will unlock the rear wheels so they roll instead of skidding across the lawn.

    Long time green works pro user. Have the mower trimmer and blower. All 60v. I’ve landscaped using all gas products on the side for years prior to owning these. I can say every electric variant has a break in time… for you almost they al have their quirks but after owning them for several years I mow much more efficiently and none of the issues have remained issues. I’ve either thoughtlessly worked over them or have managed doing simple things like applying the gas sooner as well as when turning using the mowers locking of the wheels to my advantage. Love the video quick and informative.

    I have a Chevy Bolt and there is no delay between accelerating and the car taking off, it's instantaneous. I have never heard of that electric car delay issue. Looks like a nice mower, just worried about the batteries only lasting a few years and then having to buy new ones.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeh, I think I may have been backwards on my electric car scenario... have been corrected by a few folks... Maybe unlike gas engines that dump fuel into the carb and then take off the electric cars are instantaneous... definitely not the case for this mower there is a delay. So the batteries are 4 year warranty from Greenworks and if you buy from Costco they double the warranty to 8 years. I have Milwaukee and Dewalt tools that have lasted years with no problems on the batteries... i think the tech is getting much better but I'm definitely not a lithium ion battery expert. I purchased this at Costco in May of this year. It cuts really well unless I use the self propel mode. It cuts nice and level when using it in push mode. When I switch to self propel mode it cuts noticeably uneven on each pass, left side cuts higher than the right side. This has been a bit frustrating because when you pay for a self propelled mower you expect a nice even cut. Has anyone else experienced this and if so have you been able to fix it. I’m debating returning it and re buying it as I’ve not been made aware of others experiencing this problem. Otherwise it has been really easy and fun to use.

    Great review I just recently got the Harbor Freight Atlas version that looks almost exactly the same for only $215 before tax with a 20% off coupon and I already had 4 batteries but I bought the fast charger but it only charges 1 battery at a time and it still isn't that fast but it's definitely faster than the older super slow charger that I had from before but I already had several of the Atlas tools like the 80v chainsaw, 80v weed eater and 80v pole saw and they used to have a push version of the same mower from Atlas that the wheels wouldn't spin and it was like $60 cheaper that I wanted to get because I just want to push it to save battery life and that 1 was cheaper but for some reason they discontinued it so right now they only have the 1 self-propelled 80v Atlas version that you can still push but it has that extra bar that you can squeeze so that the wheels will make it go but I don't hardly use it because I don't want to kill the battery quicker but they look real similar but I like that your batteries are pretty big and you have a fast double charger that's awesome for sure but then that makes it cost a lot more but great review!

I turned to my 11 year old son who now goes out and drops a battery and mows our yard and a neighbors yard and I said buddy, that right there is why I love these battery mowers. No fuss, just push the button and go. I bought into the full suite of tools and love them. Not a tree hugger and had many crappy electric yard trimmers and blowers and these are great. I have a gas/carburetor type self-propelled rear wheel drv that I've never used because it's impossible to move without the motor running - at least I assume that's the problem. I've never started it and will return it to Costco. I'm not having that problem with this Greenworks version. Rolled right out of the box.
    Self-propelled is one of those things you think will be great until you use it. It's more efficient for me to pull my mowers backward, and then go forward again, rather than turn around all the time, so that will take getting used to. I bought this one because, besides my itty bitty lawn I have 5 bumpy acres of grass and weeds. Except for the bit covered in pine trees, I've mowed almost the whole dang thing with a push mower, and it's serious exercise. This 80V self-propelled came with a 5 year warranty AND I could get it through Costco. I already know Greenworks' service options are pitiful in my area, so if anything goes wrong, it's going back to Costco.

I now have the mower, trimmer, hedge trimmer, edger, snowblower, chainsaw, blower... i think that sums it up... got my son to be 11 year old son out mowing with it now and he is hooked... he mowed 3 lawns and made $85 in one evening after school... there are zero kids in my neighborhood doing this so if my kids want to they can make a killing... and I don't have to refill tanks or change oil... :-)

    Single point height adjuster seems nice at first. But over time, the linkages and pivots wear making it quite sloppy. The mower won't cut flat because the deck is bouncing around over uneven ground. Individual wheel adjustment is better by far for the long haul. Also, front wheel drive mowers are easier to maneuver as you indicated. However, they have trouble pulling themselves uphill if there's any amount of moisture on the grass. Toro has a great fix for this issue with their Personal Pace rear wheel drive system. It drives the speed you walk and disengages when you stop. It's very fluid in its stop/go/backup maneuvers. And there are no levers or handles to fumble with while doing so. It just works. Thanks for the good video.

I have not had the electric one out of the yard yet, but it feels the same in the yard. When the drive belt needed replaced it did slow down. I think it was slipping. Most unfortunate, my husband passed away last year and he handled all the mechanical stuff on the property while I handled our business/office/home, so I asked one of his friends to assemble it for me. I went to use it for the first time today. I placed the charged batteries in, attached the grass chute, lowered the wheels, etc. I started it and was very pleased at the low volume of sound (as you mentioned, about 80 decibels); however, when I went over grass, it did not cut anything. I was totally bummed. Obviously I have done something wrong but have no idea what. Any thoughts?

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry not sure i know why it wouldn't be cutting. I assume you've confirmed that it in fact has a blade attached. Next I've noticed that you can hold in the self propel handle and start it and it immediately starts moving. Not sure if you then grab the other handle if it engages or not. Maybe make sure you have the green handle held first when you start and then engage the grey handle to walk with it... just a stab in the dark, no clue if this matters. Good luck!

They must have known it was a problem when it was designed. And they did "nothing" ! Why ? Is it that the Engineers at Greenworks have never mowed a lawn ? It pisses me off that they failed to address and correct what I consider to be a major defect ! It's like they said, fuck it ! I don't have to use these mowers. As a matter of fact, I don't even mow my own lawn ! I have a Landscaping Company do mine ! It's infuriating to have a company leave a defect such as this one go unaddressed. 1 1/2 seconds to engage/disengage is a huge exaggeration. There is a brief delay, to start, but it's a fraction of a second. The delay to disengage the wheels was slightly annoying at first, but I learned to disengage a half second before i was done with a pass and the issue is forgotten (I learned that trick from another commenter on TH-cam). I own and drive a Tesla and it does not take any second to respond to the throttle. You push on it and it is gone, actually after one and a half second you may not even see it anymore.

    The advantage of buying at Costco is the double the battery warranty - to 8 years - that's huge!

    Hi ! Thank you for the great review.
    Which model no is it exactly ? I can't find it anywhere. Most of the time they are black, and or dont have the folding option.

      Thank you! I got mine on Greenworks.com here is the model number: Greenworks 80V Mower With Two 4AH Batteries and Rapid Charger
      Model: 2533902
      My rapid charger was a dual bay but it didn’t specify that. Most people are finding the same model but with a single bay charger at Costco or on Costco.com. Amazon seems to have this mower but with only a single battery on the mower itself. amzn.to/3MNAiuE
      I think Greenworks has a mess on their hands as it relates to how they are creating so much model confusion.

    Does turbo do anything beneficial if you’re not going through tough stuff? Cleaner cuts?

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve not noticed any significant benefit. I was mowing in turbo the other day to see if it was any better and then decided to go back to normal so I didn’t drain the battery too fast. It’s definitely more power but not sure it matters if you don’t need it. I also understand that it is supposed to auto engage turbo as needed so the button is just if you know you are in deep stuff the whole time.

    I love the mower , but I’m having problems to make turns . I have to turn the self propelled off and turn back on for every turn . Can you help ? This can’t be good for the mower .

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s pretty much how it works since it’s rear wheel drive. Most self propelled gas mowers are front wheel. Takes some getting used to for sure. I just let off about a foot before I need to turn.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So I'm not a lawn expert but I mow higher vs. lower... if you feel its too high you can always drop down. Also depends on time of year, heat, water conditions, etc... We tend go 5 or higher and mow weekly in the Spring/Summer here in Ohio

      Lots of different pricing out in the market right now, mostly varies by number and amh rating on the batteries. Costco is a good bet if they are still doing the extended warranty on the battery.

    I don't want self-propelled. Can you turn the mower, back up, etc without the drivetrain fighting you? Can you just push it with self-propelled off?
    Has anyone disabled the self-propelled? These mowers are light. I can't imagine why anyone needs self-propelled, and I don't want to fight the laggy drivetrain that you've described.
    Thoughts?

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      you can most certainly push it w/out self propelled if you wish, just don't hold the handle that activates it, no reason to try to disable it. You can turn it fine, just takes some time to get used to letting off the self propel a foot or so before turning.

    The website and products ARE confusing. If a battery is 80v, it should work with all 80v products, but that's not the case from what I understand.

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree the site is confusing, but if you shop by 80v Tools, this link www.greenworkstools.com/collections/80-volt, those are all compatible to my understanding. I have about 8 tools now and they all work off the same batteries and work great. The variation in batteries comes down to the amp hours, so how long they last. I have the mower, snowblower, blower, hedge trimmer, edger, chainsaw, string trimmer and am happy with all of them.

    Great review! I was never thinking of going electric but my neighbor bought an Eco from Lowes last week and it was so quiet and his lawn looks good. So it got me thinking especially as my LawnBoy is struggling after 17 years! I think I'm going to go with the Costco deal. I see Costco includes 2 batteries a 4 ah and 2ah. Does anyone know the exact run time of the 2 Costco batteries combined?
    My lawn usually takes 45-60 mins with a gas push mower depending on my energy levels. So decent sized subdivision home. Thanks!

    • @hardybrothersproductreviews
      @hardybrothersproductreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same happened to me when I saw my neighbor mowing but didn't hear him... lol. Strange that the Costco version now comes with a 4 and 2h battery, they used to both be 4ah and they had an extended warranty up to 8 years. The two 4ah batteries were supposed to last 90 mins, so I'd assume you are around 60-70 mins now... Probably my biggest gripe with Greenworks is their crappy marketing and poor product versioning/comparison... no rhyme or reason to why you can find 7 variations of the same product. crazy...

    We purchased one from Costco,have used once, so the jury is still out a little bit. Seemed fine however, but I don’t see anything in the so called owners manual about the two types of blades. They are similar but not the same. Is one for mulching and the other for side discharge or what? Can you help? I have looked on their website and still didn’t see anything about owns manual, operating instructions. Perhaps you know. It’s not as if I won’t use it either why but I am curious. Thanks for any help!

      I think one is for improved mulching but not positive. May want to reach out to Greenworks service and see what they say. We've had ours for a year and my daughter mowed 4 lawns per week last year and my 11 year old just took up mowing this year and knocked out 3 lawns the other night... he made $85 and is hooked! haha

      The second blade is for tall grass or wet grass. It's a high lift blade - mine says it right on the blade. For my use, I wish the high lift blade was the one they installed. I'll be swapping mine out.

      not sure, but it mows for about 90 minutes... So I'd say, if you know how long you mow your current yard, easier to do it by time. obviously grass length and wet vs. dry play a role too.

      Yeh I got that analogy wrong. Definitely a hesitation on the mower however, maybe for the same reason as there is no need for instant acceleration on a mower.
