My lawn is too big to bag, as it would take forever to keep starting and stopping to empty bags, and I'd also wind up with about 7 bags of grass to put out for the garbage. What I've found works better, when I let the grass get a little too long, is to mulch first then go over the mulch trails with the bag on and pick up the loose grass. This ultimately ends up being faster and also results in far fewer bags of grass, and the lawn looks swell. I have an ego electric with dual blades, and it works just fine using whatever blades are on the mower, with no need to change from the mulching blade to the bagging blade or vice versa.
Moronic. I mulch my St. Aug 3 times a week no issues. Bagging just wastes time and free food for your lawn and soil. Of course this guy supposed to be an expert yet doesn't even have sprinklers. Also I don't use a crappy battery mower either.
Thank you, I just bought this brand of lawn mower second hand and I was using the bag and the mulch plug at the same time. The mulch plug fell out and I had no idea what it was (first time cutting the lawn). This video was really helpful! Love that you're honest, funny and straight to the point. Greenworks does need to sponsor you!
When I'm cutting 3x a week, I will mulch one of the cuts sometimes. When it gets away from me, I have to double cut...bag first run, mulch the second run. Just what I do. Excellent video BYD and your yard is looking good.
Whuddup bro! The issue here isn't the mulching but the height of cut that you're set at in conjunction with the height of the lawn. Given that the mower is set lower, naturally, you're going to have excess clippings being cut at once, thereby causing them to be piled up and/or shot out once you hit the driveway. To eliminate that, you'd have to mulch high and then do a second cut at a lower height, etc.
After watching this video I now always bag my lawn especially during peak growing season. As a result, I have one of the greenest lawns in the neighborhood. I mulch only when I don’t feel like bagging.
I mow every 4 days and have always been team mulch. Recently I feel like there’s so much debris on the lawn from previous mows and have been bagging. I love the way it looks and blowing takes much less time.
When grass is long, and I don't feel like bagging, I prefer side-discharge. The clippings typically blow away and doesn't cause thatch buildup like mulching does.
I've started bagging more now. Part of it is keeps my lawn cleaner and has helped with weed control. The last thing is I cut every two weeks, and even then some times depending on weather its not always consistent.
This year alone, the grass has been growing rapidly like it does in the spring time. We’ve a so got a lot of rain where I’m at this year. From here on out I’m not doing anything besides bagging. Btw, your lawn looks amazing!
i done mulching!!! thabk you sir. I used to always bag and kept hearinng that mulch would make the lawn better.....BS. My grass does not look better, it's more of a mess. The whole "it fertilizes the gass" idea is a lot of nonesense honestly.
I have cool season grass and I do it all. It depends on the situation. In the spring when I can’t keep up, I bagged…really clean cut, too.. In the summer when growth has slowed, I mulch. I recently purchased a 50” Timecutter and so this fall (lawn grows like in the spring), when I hit the lawn with 46-0-0, I plan to mulch it because the Timecutter is much better than my TimeMaster at mulching. The benefit of the ZT is I can run over the lawn multiple time quickly if necessary. Btw, I side discharged my parents lawn, but mulch the lawn with the new mower. If I can help it, I am not walking the lawn. I am savings my legs.
Mulching is about creating small, easily biodegradable pieces of grass. Not neglecting the mower, then picking favorites. I mulch when the weather is hot, but in this case I would also bag.
I wouldn’t drag grass onto the driveway either. Just run a few strips along the driveway first to use as a turning point. It’s not a bloody cylinder mower
I love your honesty And the fact that you give people options and what to expect if they don’t follow your directions great great information and video today
My man BYD with the golden tips, this is for sure going to help me, we've had non-stop rain for a week and I have to mow a small jungle, bagging will for sure be the way.
If you're mowing with a higher HOC, I think the grass won't breqk down as fast. I had die off and when i looked there were old grass clippings covering the ground.
Got to know when not to cut so much off that the lawn has that yellow look. If I have to mow high because of rain. I mow to the point the lawn is still green and then use my manual reel mower to step the height back down to where I want to be without exposing the brown or yellow look.... Bag that first cut.... Works well
I haven't bagged in decades. About 12 years ago, due to my schedule and the fact that I just quit wanting to do my yard anymore, we started hiring a service. They bagged but we stayed with them because of cost even though they weren't doing (in my view) a very good job. Since late summer last year, after I finally had enough and my lawn now looks like crap, I've gone back into the lawn care business (for me anyway) and got a mower and am back to mulching. But its going to take 2 full years to get it even close to where it was. I've got to dethatch, aerate, and overseed. Then I'm back to mulching. In terms of mulching, I'd say a gas mower and electric mower, not to mention the blade, makes a huge difference. My yards (mulched) never looked anything but good -- heck, even when I had a large pine tree in my yard and mulched needles, the yard still looked good. Now that I have have mostly bermuda, it DID look good until the yard guys just used crappy cutting blades on it for over a decade. Its my fault for letting it go that long, but no more. And no more bagging. To each his own, I guess.
If your lawn's been fertilized and you're bagging the clippings you're also REMOVING vital nutrients that can be returned to the soil by MULCHING THE CLIPPINGS
Have half to a third of the mower over the already cut grass to help avoid the mulch lines and give it less to mulch at once. You'll take more passes but it should help with the debris. Hard to avoid the spray on the cement unless you go around the perimeter once or twice to create a buffer. Then all the clippings should stay in the lawn.
Crap mower with not enough air flow for proper mulching. Also wasting fertilizer. Our area will not take your grass but I love your overall opinion and openness.
Good video however, I have always told my lawn guy for last 10 years to not wast time with bagging. My Bermuda grass is green as ever and have never had any issues.
Mulching does leave a bit more of a mess but it's so much faster, don't have to mess around with stopping all the time to empty out the bag. So it's a trade off. Used to bag all the time until I discovered mulching and it was a game changer.
I have the same mower and on max speed, using a bag it still leaves some grass clipping. It's not as good as the Honda mower I had when it come to bagging leaves or grass = I still have to rake to remove the leaves..
I mulch, give it a day to dry out then go over it again, the dried clippings shatter and create a good compost, very good this year 8 weeks no measurable rain. If you must bag, mulch first and let it dry then bag, 80 percent reduction in volume. Aka make hay while the sun shines.
I think the grass is cut too low. Taller grass retains more water and builds deeper roots and is easier to push the mower when it gets really tall. I used to be a "golf course rough" grass height guy, but now I mow on the #5 and #6 setting of my EGO for a taller yard. I never water my grass in the (OH) summer and I don't do yard treatments. Yes, I have weeds, but those benefit bees or similar. My grass has a deep green look and rarely goes dormant in summer (or winter). And I don't have time to mow 3x/wk.
I have the same look with my Ego when I mulch, it basically looks like crap. I had to walk out with a leaf blower. I had a gas rider mower for 16 years but gave it to my sister, when I mowed with that I side discharged. If your mower has a strong enough discharge it does spread the grass around nicely. But bagging is the cleanest best looking way to go.
It’s not because of the mulching, it’s because he cut too much off at once. It can also be uneven leveling. Mower and blade type varies, too. My EGO mower has 3 different blade sets.
I swear I live in the matrix. I literally decided to bag yesterday instead of mulching because I had the same feeling. Same mower height, less yellowing after switching to bagging. Grass looks great. I think mulching doesn't cut the blades as clean because the blades are simultaneously cutting the cuttings, creating a tear.
its like u said, if u cut long clippings you need to bag, however mowing more often taking off less clippings and mulching is better for the lawn. But if you dont mow often then its better to bag, and replace the lost nutrients by fertilising. mulching high grass wont work, it wont be mulched fine enough, wont decompose and just cause thatch and moss.
Of course if you let the grass get 4 inches in height you should bag . It's a given ..mulch to me is always best if you always mow often and don't break the 1/3 rule..
I stopped mulching . Too much of a hassle because you need perfect conditions . If it’s any sort of wet or moist , it starts to stick and clog the undercarriage of mower and doesn’t mulch properly . Mowing and trimming takes too much time as it is . I don’t need to clean up clumps of mulch too . I only bag now
I bagged for 21 years with my Lawnboy SilverPro Duraforce mower. I got an EGO now and only mulch. Saves a ton of time and effort not needing to empty the bag 7 to 10 times in the woods. But the mulching of the select cut EGO is awesome! The Lawnboy also has a mulching feature with dual blades but I never used the mulch plug.
i mostly bag it cause i compost the clippings and the year after it goes back on the lawn. only times i mulch is when i can mow it every 3 days and the lawn is dry.
Mulching is good if you are following the ⅓ rule - but if you are knocking off too much then it will definitely suffocate the lawn - combined with summer heat and it will eventually turn into a disaster
For me, I live with it in my backyard if I'm taking off too much. I still mulch. If it's my front yard, I'd rather just double cut it to break the mulch down further. That's quicker for my yard than bagging.
I don't know man, I've always mulched and my yard looks better than most, LOL. I even mulch our fall leaves. Zero problems. The last thing I want to deal with is a big pile of yard waste in the corner of our yard. Mulching is easy and fast. Whatever floats your boat though. Also, it's super wasteful to bag stuff and send it to a dump of some kind. Just mulch and let nature do it's thing. 👍
My neighbor has an almost identical front lawn... she only mulched and I only bagged for 2 summers. Her grass was MUCH greener and more lush. And we both fertilized the same,
Just think you can mulch it , then bag it , then compost the grass . Let the grass dry out first. You can also use a lawn sweeper to pick up the excess grass clippings.
I bag and compost my grass to use as top dressing each spring and fall. I’m happy with this system so far…. Keeps my grass from ending up in a land fill and allows me to reuse it with other organic matter to put back in my lawn. Lots of work but very gratifying when you accomplish it!
@@arielrodriguez6980 no ideal but here are a few thoughts 💭, blade needs sharpening, you don’t have a low or high lift blade on the mower to get the grass into the bagger, you’re cutting off to much grass so mower can’t get it all. Time for a new mower.
I’d only mulch if I have my thatch layer under control, I personally wouldn’t mulch if you already have a thick thatch layer Itll strangle your lawn and have complicating issues after.
I'm not judging, I'm just in such a different position I don't know if his results are relevant to everyone. I live in Florida and mow every 10 days on a lawn tractor at 2.5 inches. My deck is a 42 twin blade and the grass is so fine (dry mowing only)I never see much of it. Grass is recovering but it's slow. Biggest issue appears to be blistering sun vs amount of watering. I mow at 5 mph. Lawn services in my area use zero turns and clearly mulch. Those boys are twice as fast as I am. Just saying big equipment mulching may change the outcome.
If the lawn gets ahead of you due to rain or life circumstances you can mulch/mow on high then go back 2-3 days later and go shorter. Also go over the lawn twice or even 3 times to chop it adequately. Certainly make sure your blades are sharp and you have a mulching blade installed.
My lawn has some fern type grass in a lot of spots. Does anyone has this also or know what to do about it? From a distance it looks ok but I want grass there instead.
@@johnd9357 no I mean raise it. The reason you do this is to disperse the clippings. Works every time. I fixed my post above so that everyone would understand
When I reel mow regularly I leave it since the clippings are small. I was on vacation Last and had to collect the clippings. Its also more work bagging :p I do like how clean the yard looks though when I bag
I have an ego and a Honda . The honda is so much better at making the clippings more finer. the EGO will not be as fine, it looks just like that Green works when you bagged. I never mulch I always bag. But Ii bet if you put a gas mower out there and do the same thing I bet it will mulch the grass a lot better. It will still leave clippings but nothing like that greenworks did.. that's when you want to use a gas mower when you cut off more than 1/3 rd and will look a lot better too after your finished. Not too crazy about the EGO as far as cutting the lawn but I do like it for other reasons. I like their drive system better than gas self propelled. I do notice coming up a hill that the grass will look different than going down a hill it's like it don't cut as good with up hill with the EGO.. I have a lot of lmonkey grass and in the spring thie EGOworked so good cutting it down in mulch beds with a bagger. The bag does fill up fast and if you let it fill up it will leave a mess in the mulch beds. It didn't disturb them mulch at all. I know a gas would have
Just bag it. Cut higher. Than cut again in two days shorter. Than again in two days shorter. Never cut more than a third and don’t go below 2.5” with a rotary.
Here's a third option. I got the Greenworks 25 inch about a month ago. I don't want to bag (only crazy people bag where I live), and I didn't want to mulch because it can bog down the mower and slow me down. Mulching also uses more power. The 25 inch mower doesn't have a discharge chute. However, if you leave the mulch plug out it works as a rear discharge. The flap on the back will let the grass out without doing anything to it. If the grass is tall or wet it might clog up a little, so open the flap more somehow. It's a win-win if you don't mind clippings in the grass, which I don't.
Cut lawn or bag first, then apply fertilizer and water 💦 in ASAP. That way it will fall all the way down ( when applied to dry lawn ) and watering it will help release the fertilizer and help it stick the the wet soil. You’ll be good to bag a couple days after that also. I’ve tested it the other way and honestly I didn’t find much fertilizer while bagging but I was cutting at two inches.🤷🏾♂️

@@arielrodriguez6980 no ideal but here are a few thoughts 💭, blade needs sharpening, you don’t have a low or high lift blade on the mower to get the grass into the bagger, you’re cutting off to much grass so mower can’t get it all. Time for a new mower.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Mower was bought new about a year old. I mowed my bermuda at 1"
I always bag. My yard is so darn think anyways the excess mulch would just choke out the yard. I cut twice a week, next to lowest setting it has
So helpful thank you!!
@@abotello8320 👍🏾
I’d only mulch if I have my thatch layer under control, I personally wouldn’t mulch if you already have a thick thatch layer Itll strangle your lawn and have complicating issues after.
When you’re cutting grass, can you mulch first and then put the bag on there will that help .will that cause an issue?
You’ll need to experiment with you mower. All mowers don’t cut the same or bag the same.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral we appreciate you. Thank you for the advice in this video. Definitely help me out.
Nice video. Couldn’t help but notice the watch band changing colors 😂
I always bag my clippings.
Thank you !!! I’m bagging! Hella work but it’s worth it ! I’m “crushing my neighbors” for sure !
Mulch once a year typically and I regret it every time. Team bag.
Just saying big equipment mulching may change the outcome.
i STG your lawn is immaculate
What do you do with the clippings???
If the lawn gets ahead of you due to rain or life circumstances you can mulch/mow on high then go back 2-3 days later and go shorter. Also go over the lawn twice or even 3 times to chop it adequately. Certainly make sure your blades are sharp and you have a mulching blade installed.
Should I mulch bag or side discharge new Bermuda grass
If you got weeds bag, other than that you can mulch or bag. Side Discharge is optional but that would be my last choice.
Thank you
Bagging gets the spring weed seed out too
You are correct
My lawn has some fern type grass in a lot of spots. Does anyone has this also or know what to do about it? From a distance it looks ok but I want grass there instead.
Spectracide 470 will kill that. I don’t know the exact name but once I treated it with that it goes away in a week or two.
Thank you for your help. I’ll get on it ASAP
man doing mowing
music " nah this is avenger level threat, he is saving the world!!!"
I bag all the way!!! look so much nicer
Mulch, cut it one way at your desired height then raise the hoc and cut the opposite way. I use this way with my stander
Raise the HOC? Or you mean lower it?
@@johnd9357 no I mean raise it. The reason you do this is to disperse the clippings. Works every time. I fixed my post above so that everyone would understand
@@Cenlalowell I see. Interesting. I’ll have to try it.
I run the scag 21 I don’t have that problem there bubba
Scag doesn’t have a battery 21 or 25 Frank 🤷🏾♂️
Hey BYD...I always bag mines. I have a few weeds in my lawn
Way to go Teddy 👍🏾
Does the turbo mode on your mower cause grass burn?
Not at all, if you getting that it may be because the blade is dull or you cutting to low.
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral thank you, understood
But it is also good to note on the type of grass you have you can put it lower but if you tall fescue is not a good idea to cut lower at any time 👌👌👍👍
Really nice looking property and neighborhood 👍🏽Bro
Should not bog down if your using the 1/3 rule or less
Just got done reel mowing the front and side yard, son doing the backyard yard with a rotary mower lol
Lol 😂. What kind of mowers do you own?
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral , Cal Trimmer and a Honda 21inch
What do you do with your clipping?
I have a wooded lot on my property where I dump.
Thank you for great info !
You’re welcome 7 5 3
BYD it had to break your heart cutting into that beautiful green lawn. It hurt me just watching you do it.
Yes it does but I know in about 3-4 days she’ll be back 😃👍🏾
Can you bag after putting down granule fertilizer
Cut lawn or bag first, then apply fertilizer and water 💦 in ASAP. That way it will fall all the way down ( when applied to dry lawn ) and watering it will help release the fertilizer and help it stick the the wet soil. You’ll be good to bag a couple days after that also. I’ve tested it the other way and honestly I didn’t find much fertilizer while bagging but I was cutting at two inches.🤷🏾♂️
@@BYDonBermudaGrassCentral Thanks. I was thinking it my suck up the fertilizer. Im at 2 inches now
Why did you cut your lawn so short? Also, aren't you supposed to use a dedicated mulching blade?
