      @@ElementalMaker What if a nuclear powered vehicle were able to send impulses of electricity in front of it powering each coil in a tube right before it got to them? I Guess it might be more efficient to just propel it by conventional means, but this would be a really cool way of transporting things with a self powered/contained power "projectile" with the coils acting as rails of a train. If you have anywhere around you that still processes disposable cameras you can usually just go in and ask for a few of the empty shells. Any one with an actual discharge lamp for the flash has a low wattage ~300V power supply in it. A whole mini coil gun could probably fit in the camera shell.

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I made many coilguns back when I was a kid with those. They are quite fun, but once you start adding capacitors in parallel, it takes ages to charge. This boost converter puts out a ton more current than those little camera flash boards.

    • @tarstarkusz
      @tarstarkusz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I was thinking along similar lines. I'm pretty sure the cap in this video is just massive overkill and that a 50uF 300v cap should probably work as well. After all, it really doesn't take much energy to shoot such a tiny projectile at such relatively low speeds.

    • @Jl4zio
      @Jl4zio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tarstarkusz you are correct a big capacitor like shown would have a lot inductance and extend the discharge and may start slowing the projectile if current is still flowing after the projectile passes halfway inside of the coil. You want extremely fast rise times and a quick pulse.

    Gotta love any video that throws a hidden south park reference in. Now here is a thought for a possible future project. I'm sure you have seen the experiments using a vacuum with a burst disk to propel projectiles. NightHawkinLight did a good one. And Mythbusters did one where they shot a ping pong ball at over mach 1. Now it would be great to see that technology mixed with coil gun tech to get a projectile going even faster. This internet fad is great seeing as how it allows people to connect with like minded individuals. I just wish we lived closer so I could help you out with stuff. Oh and how dare you ever use the term scale down. Bad ElementalMaker. Anyhow keep up the good work.

    That looks like one of those 0.1F capacitors... My dad used to have like 50 of them. Then my mom got tired of his vintage electro collection, so he had to scrap them. They were brand new, scrapped by Siemens (where he worked) when they abandoned the multi-rack mainframe design somewhere in the 80s (one of the racks was a power stabilizing battery of some 120 of those badboys. Computers ran 30A currents back then. Hot business, quite literally). Anyway, I managed to keep 3 out of my mom's sight. We destroyed one using it to explode smaller capacitors (fully charging the big one, then inverted connecting a smaller one. The big one would load 100x the max charge of the smaller one into it and boooooom. But the big electrolyte capacitors are not made for load dumps. So after a few times, it started leaking. We also were able to charge it less the last 2 times (probably shorted out some of the surface inside). Made for an interesting disection afterwards...
    Now I wish I still had them, I could make a 50 stage coil mass-accelerator... (nice euphemism, btw) Or perhaps run a small backyard roller coaster off of them... (at least for a couple of runs)

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Xeon strobe lamps make a great trigger as well, some of the power is wasted in the light and heat of course, but in the bigger coil guns ive seen people make, the SCRs required are very expensive, so strobe lamps make a good balance between price and efficiency.

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never would have thought of using one of those but that's ingenious! Great tip!

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe use the strobe lamps for a laser 😁

    • @Jl4zio
      @Jl4zio 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Flash lamps also have extremely fast rise times compared to any semiconductor. For a coilgun you want all current to end by the time the projectile is passing the halfway point inside of the coil. Otherwise if current is still flowing the projectile will be slowed. You can play with the timing by the inductance of the coil. Another benefit of flashlamps is their awesome ability to explode louder than a gunshot and throw quartz glass everywhere. I once dumped 20 disposable camera caps through a camera flashlamp. My ears were ringing for a couple hours.

    magnetic coils in series triggered in series can give a massive boost in velocity, timing on triggering them at correct speed is the problem

    • @Draakdarkmaster6
      @Draakdarkmaster6 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i've heard people use light barriers to rectify the problem, but to do it correctly you'd need to space the coils more or use a shorter round, basically so the projectile stops obstructing the light barrier before it reaches equilibrium in the coil.

    • @brendanrandle

    If you add an IR interuptor to detect when the projectile exits the coil, then turns off current to the coil, the velocity of the pronectile will not be decreeased as it exits the coil by the residual magnetic field

    • @ElementalMaker
      @ElementalMaker  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It would need to be in the center of the coil, but yep that's the concept. One to detect entrance to the coil, one at center to deenergize the coil.

    • @3er24t4g1
      @3er24t4g1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ElementalMaker Nope,
      Just add one detector before the entrance and one where the projectile starts.
      Have current dump into the coil when the object triggers the first detector, at the start, and stop current flow when it enters to the coil. You could even work out a way to observe the velocity of the object and calculate how long the coil needs to stay on before the the object passes through the center.
      There is potential here for a very interesting project. I would also recommend you look into rodin coils.

    if you were to fix the accelerator mechanism itself would you get better puncture results at lower voltages since i would think you are losing some velocity when the magnetism of the coil actually grab and flings the projectile? I guess the comparison would be trying to apply force to a movable object while you are in water, the object will indeed move forward but you yourself will also be moved backwards at the same time.

    Man, scale that into a higher voltage capacitor(there are some small 400vlt ones, 2 of them would weigh about a pound and a half. Thinking of how to get this done in a backpack form, could carry a couple capacitors for multiple shots, and make a rifle that uses this concept, it would be crazy dangerous to those who don't understand what they are doing, but it would be pretty cool, doable and at least as useful as a PCP 50cal air rifle. And less expensive, could probably encased the whole thing into epoxy(?), I don't know, but I think it would be a great thing to have, to show off to your friends when plinking cans in the back yard, to getting the children very interested in how electric/magnetism works. Lol

      I've used smaller caps of the same voltage but they do not generate very high velocities.

    • @brett9679
      @brett9679 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's a triggered spark gap initiated with a high voltage spark. The high voltage ionizes the air around the spark gap therefore lowering the resistance causing the capacitor to discharge at a lot higher amperage than 1400A. Same concept as a flashtube but without the tube. Hope it helps.

    I want to use 3 sets of 7 stage 6inch wide 8inch long coil rail 1st stage 2"L stage 2-7 1"L for a ion accelerator to increase thrust on a ion drive. Increase the speed of the ion and increase the thrust. Do so fast enough and you can get proper acceleration and maneuverability in space. And possibly if using a ion drive and a multi stage accelerator to accelerate the ions to near light-speed out the back of the craft you could get very good acceleration/ deceleration of the craft and Achieve near light speeds. We all know NASA and there mk3 which was a big waste of time and money because by the p/w ratio it's 500lbs has a thrust of 278 millinewtons and the original ion drive they made was around 10lbs with a thrust of 92millinewtons so the mk3 has 3x more thrust because they made it have 3ion rings cuz it looks cool but they didn't focus on ion speed improvement no they made it 17x less efficient 3x more thrust and 50x heavier ,spent probably millions and years making it when they could've just used 3 mk1's to get the same thrust.a and used that money and time to improve the mk1 with a ion coil rail drive. God damn it some give me a job! Any tips on what power requirements an switch for my scale would be great rant over.
