I remember watching this and that line.
What made that scene so effective was that in every other movie where something like that was about to happen, the camera would cut away at the last second to the victim or the perpetrator and so we were expecting that to happen this time too and so we didn't look away...making the act so much more shocking.

Kathy Bates’ performance in Misery was one of the best if not the best of all time. Her acting was out of this world.
She truly was Annie Wilkes in that movie, it wasnt acting at that point. It is an absolute pleasure to watch such talented acting accompanied by such an amazing book/story. She really took her first major role and swung it out of the park big time, that movie is Stephen kings favorite adaptations of his books and I’m sure Kathy bates is a big part of that. Everything she does is above and beyond the standard

GracefulDanny Standing ovations were less common at the Academy Awards 25 years ago than they are today. They were usually reserved for actors who were given the lifetime achievement award. Now, every Oscar winner get an ovation, just like every child gets a trophy;)
Well, DDL got one the year before for My Left Foot. :) But they almost always give a standing ovation for someone who played a physically ill person.

Erepyon I made a mistake in my post. Robert Duvall presented another Silence of the Lambs Oscar of course. I don't think Stallone or Bruce Willis have ever played bad guy roles. I'd bet it's because they are largely controlled by the business that Hollywood is.

When I read misery I felt like there’s no way someone could portray Annie Wilkes like how she was in the book but Kathy really did take the character and bring her to life, which is terrifying because just reading about Annie Wilkes is a spine chilling experience. Kathy definitely deserved the Oscar and the fact that it was her first major role is amazing and shows how talented she is

Misery is a masterpiece
Personally, I think Kathy Bates is just as good an actress as Meryl Streep.
Let's see...multiple Oscar, Golden Globe, Emmy, and SAG nominations (7 wins in total), respected by her peers, great reviews from critics, been in several box office hits and highly rated TV shows, and is well known even to the average moviegoer/TV viewer. If you're gonna go with _INCREDIBLY underrated,_ pick someone who's never been recognized or rewarded for their great work.

I was born in 85 so I watched this a good few years later as a teen. Her performance was unreal. I was utterly terrified of Annie Wilkes. Amazing acting. Dolores Claiborne is also as really good watch.
She did so well in this role I was actually scared of HER. I was never so convinced of anything in a movie in my whole life as I was of that character in Misery. It really creeped me out and I found it hard to fathom how anyone sane could pull of a performance so convincing.

Kathy was great in 'Misery' and her role made all the more effective because virtually no one had ever heard of her before this movie.
My wife still refuses to watch "Misery" or any movie of Kathy Bates since seeing her performance. So I just finished watching "Misery" again a truly astonishing performance and well deserved win.
DusKeyOwl I was only about 12 or so when Misery came out. I watched it and she scared me so much that I couldn’t watch anything with her again (or Misery again) for years. It took the movie Angus to pull me out of it. Now as an adult, Misery is one of my favorite films. :)
I still have to close my eyes and cover my ears during the ankle scene but I manage to watch the chestburster scene in Alien.

Gilbert Martinez she is amazing as Delores as is all the lead actresses in that film, along with misery it's one of my all time favourites.. and kathy bates has been my favourite actress since I saw misery when I was a kid.. she should have won an Oscar for Dolores too, that film should have won a lot of Oscars from director to set design and everything in between. also the book is amazing, whenever I read it I can't put it down (not just cos there's no chapters to take a break on lol).
