  • Lloyd Knibb OD (8 March 1931 - 12 May 2011) was a Jamaican drummer who is considered Jamaica's most important and influential modern drummer. A master percussionist, he contributed to every style of this nation's popular and not so popular musical forms, including jazz, mento, burru, nyabinghi, rock steady and, by extension, reggae. He is most well known for his contribution to the development of the rhythm of the ska.[1] He played for The Skatalites (in the 1960s up to his death), and for Tommy McCook & The Supersonics. Knibb recorded for the producers Lloyd "Matador" Daley and Duke Reid.

Funny you should say that. My old group the Allstonians must have done about 50 gigs with the Skatalites both here and in Europe. Lloyd lived near Boston and he'd show up at gigs once in a while. We knew tons of Skatalites songs so Lloyd would sit in on Mood For Ska, Ska Boss or Rockfort Rock.

Gentleman is a proper way to describe Lloyd. The guys in my group affectionately called him Papa Lloyd!

When we toured with them back in 97 in Germany and Lloyd always made sure I was eating ok and always hooked me up with a bit of herb. My group was called The Allstonians. We made anybody that played with us listen to hours of Lloyd and other Studio 1 stuff.
Herd a couple of our songs you can find on youtube.
      Dr.Che Guevara
      Homeward Bound
      Riverside
      Can't Say

Many will imitate but no one comes close to Lloyd Knibbs, the greatest drummer to come out of Jamaica. If you ever heard and saw Lloyd play live you’d know how great he was. I had the opportunity to play with the Skatalites and when my turn came to solo Lloyd automatically switched to the burru style he obviously knew that would compliment my solo. When we finished played the song I started to walk off stage *Man where you going ? Get back on stage* that was Lloyd telling me that he liked what he heard and wanted to hear more. From *Seven Guns Alive with Baba Brooks to Don De Lion with Don Drummond to the tour de force Burru Style composed by Tommy McCook* listen to the master & know how great he was. *That beat goes on* !
