@@pinkbeetle1729 Most of the time I do, sometimes not. Other than to help keep the tent clean, it’s not really needed - I’d also be interested in Dan’s opinion. @7:28 you can see the one I was using through the floor on this trip when it was raining. I use DCF for the ground sheet - this trip all I had was the one from my duplex. I ordered the one from Durston before Christmas and it was just shipped. Hopefully it comes this week.
@@pinkbeetle1729Dan's footprint, sold separately, attaches to the tent floor itself so you never need to set it up separately or make sure it is perfectly centered. I just leave it attached all the time and don't have to mess around with it at all, it is just in place when you put the tent up.
Got mine a few weeks ago and used it for the first time on a 3 day section hike on the AT last week. It too poured rain on the second night and everything on the interior stayed completely dry; very impressed with the amount of room, ease of set up, and quality. If you still haven’t figured out the best way to roll up the tent for packing out, check out Dan Durstan’s initial video introducing the tent back in January in which he suggests the best way to roll and pack it.
@@KrizAkoni I’m sorry; you’re right the video he did in January doesn’t show packing it up. I confused it with another one he did about 2 yrs ago (pitching the X mid tent). At the end of the video he shows how he packs up the fly by grabbing each of the peak points and folding the tent in a narrow length and then rolling it up. I’ve tried it with the x mid pro 2 DCF tent and it works just the same. Enjoy your new tent.
Nice features on this tent. Great to see it's a little more tall person friendly. I like how they got it to 4 stakes with the design they used. It seems less fiddly to setup and get a good pitch.
Definitely tall person friendly…on the diagonal it’s gargantuan. The 4 stakes is a little more fiddly than it sounds. To change height effectively, you need to change the lead angle on the stakes (move them). If it’s a tight square before the poles are inserted then it will go up near perfect.
There is a factory cord there that I found a little short, creating more tension than was really necessary in my opinion. So, I changed them out for some slightly longer cords. Over time, I settle on a length I like.
Nice video Kriz. Also enjoyed your skinny pitch video. I've had my X-Mid Pro 2 out twice but haven't had to deal with wet weather yet. Very pleased with the tent.
This is good overview of some of the features of this tent. I agree that the shepherd hooks are good near the base of the zipper and that more robust stakes are recommended for the corners. Here is some additional information based on my experience. I have the original X-Mid 1 person and was fortunate to get the X-Mid Pro 2. The Pro-2 is a substantial upgrade. It weights less (about 20 oz vs about 31 oz). It is considerably more roomy without having a much bigger footprint (same length, 100 inches, and only 13 inches wider (67 vs 80). The vestibules in the X-Mid 1 are great, but in very buggy weather it is hard for me to manage my gear in the screened in area, which is about as wide as my sleeping pad. I can put all of my gear inside the Pro-2 when camping solo. The Pro-2 also seems sturdier. It is hard for me to get a good, sturdy pitch with the X-mid 1 without using the guy lines at the top , thus requiring at least a 6 stake pitch and a lot of tripping over the guy lines. In a recent two night trip, I got a solid pitch pitch using only 4 states for the Pro-2. It was raining and windy, so I added a stake near the vestibule zipper and on the mid-point of the short side (8 stake pitch, no guy lines). That worked perfectly. In really rough weather, or with weak corner stake placement, I might add guy lines. But not if I do not have to. Finally, I have not had any problems with condensation despite camping on damp nights and waking up to heavy fog. I don't expect to sleep in the X-Mid 1 p anymore, and will use the X-mid 1 fly for a cooking shelter or gear storage in snowy or rainy weather.
It’s a cool design been rattling around in the forums for a while that’s finally scaling up. Yes, I plan to do a more detailed review / comparison this winter.

I'm excited as I got to purchase the regular X mid 1p and 2p with this latest release. After having a terrible experience with my latest BA tent and their customer service, I decided it was time to move on from them and have always been curious about the Durstan tents. But up til now, they've almost been impossible to get. Can't wait to get them and test them out!
@@UnboundCrow We met on the AT this year at the Stumble Inn hostel in Front Royal. I'm Viking. I have both the original X-Mid 1P and 2P and wish the Pro had been available for the AT. I took a DupleXL due to the weight advantage and really wasn't happy with the doors or vestibules compared to the X-Mids. I've used both my 1P and 2P since returning from the AT and it just confirmed how much more I like the design of X-Mids. I think you'd be happy with them! And to prove just how much of a Durston fanboy I am, I just ordered the X-Mid Pro 2.
Looks like a better tent than the duplex. I never liked that door on the zpacks or the floating floor. This would be my pick for a dyneema tent but they are sold out until February.
Thanks for the great vid! Do you have any tips on packing up a wet and rain-soaked X-Mid? Doing the West Highland Way Scotland in Oct. so Im expecting early morning starts in rainy weather
Thanks! Those are cheap Amazon fairy string lights attached to the upper pull loops on the zippers. Puts them a few inches below ridge line with plenty of head room.
Thanks for doing a video on this tent. I've been looking at this one. I know Julie Jester loves hers. It's crazy that it's lighter than the Duplex but even bigger. How is it seeing through that material at night? I could see your yellow sleeping back through it during your day shot 3:13 Ok you just showed the night shot. I might be a little concerned about changing in that tent at night. The rest of the tent looks amazing though.~RVA~
Thanks Adam! For platforms, I carry 4 tiny cup hooks in case I can’t tie off well enough. Like with most trekking pole tents, if you can’t stake, it gets harder. Generally rocks on top of sideways stakes. I forgot to mention in the video, it has tie off points at the peaks for additional lines, that one could get crafty with.
I currently own a Duplex... the problem I usually have is a wet foot end of my sleeping bag due to contact with the outer wall during sleep. Any feedback on that with the x-Mid 2 Pro?
The geometry gives you a bit more foot room at the end. If you sleep with your head near the end with more headroom, your feet can still contact the tent if you slide down. I’m 6’1 and feel I have slightly more foot room. Now, if you sleep on an angle, it’s pretty hard to contact the tent…much more diagonal room.
I agree with you. That being said, most v-stakes are designed with the line cutouts to be used the way this one was placed or the line slips off easily. Not sure what they design them this way.

Keep it closed, shake it off, and then fold onto itself so the poly floor is on the outside. It’s pretty much a bit of a mess regardless.
