    I always think how hungry did the first person who ate a lobster have to be to eat something that looks like a giant sea bug. Only to find out it’s freaking delicious!

    Most restaurants actually kill the lobster just before boiling.
    You showed a clip of Gordon Ramsey in the video, but there’s another clip where he shows how to properly prepare and cook a lobster.
    There’s a sweet spot in the shell around the head/neck region that allows for a quick, easy kill with a sharp knife. Then, after the deed is done, you plop the lobster into the pot and boil away.
    It’s humane, and a more accurate representation of how most restaurants cook lobster, though there are some who do just drop the lobster in without a second thought.

    Even before I started watching Leon the Lobster videos, I thought boiling a lobster alive was cruel. I now think they very much feel pain. Leon seemed to have delayed movement in his large pincers after the rubber bands were removed and you can still see how deep a crevice the bands made after he molted.
    Why don’t restaurants pith the brain before they drop it in the water? A skewer jabbed between the eyes and you can scramble their brain. We did that in biology class for the live frog dissection. Better for the lobster and helps keep the bacteria away.

      True answer is yes. Primitive or not but they have nervous system and pain is one of the most desired inputs it provides. Helps witg detecting danger so creature can avoid it early enough before it become fatal.
      If lobsters pain is similar to ours feeling is another thing but you can bet it is not pleasant for them.
      Ofc you cannot say that for 100%, but that is true for absolutly any being outside of your own. There is no real hard evidence you can gather that will claim that dogs feel pain. You can have convicing clues but from scientific point of view there will be no certainty.

You can remove a fetus, but that´s only because it does not have a neural network complex enough to allow awareness of itself or it´s environment. Even newborns do not show significant awareness but they are capable of and all it requires is learning. From this perspective it is very safe to say, that it was never alive, because as soon as it could develop awareness it is prohibited to get rid of an unborn.

    On the topic of whether they feel pain, while I can’t be sure about Lobsters, there is considerable evidence that crabs do. Tests using electrical jolts show that crabs will flee from, and avoid, caves where they know they will get a nasty zap. Crabs have also been observed nursing injured legs, spending more time grooming their injured limb than the other, and actively avoiding putting weight on them.

      bananian "pain receptors" are just nerves under to much pressure, they are the same thing, but our brains processes the information differently depending on the force used, this way, an animal can feel but can't be hurt (like spiders), but since a lobster's nerves are under an exoskeleton and are coated outside the meat, as opposed to within, it's likely that they don't feel pain, but we just don't know.

      Its actually debated in neuroscience. The involved neurologists aren't stupid.
      Being sensitive and feeling pain are two different things. Did you ever have your reflex pull you away from something before you actually felt why? Thats because you can be sensitive to something and act accordingly, without an actual feeling being involved.

      @@AliothAncalagon I feel pretty confidant in stating that lobsters do not feel pain - I can go into the neuroscience debate if you want, and why I think one side is ridiculously and obviously off the mark, but the short version is that pain is a relatively complex neurological function, the actual mechanics of which we understand pretty damn well. Animals such as lobsters lack the neurological framework to feel pain, meaning it is PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE for them to do so, at least using any meaningful definition of the word 'pain'.
      None of which is to say they aren't still suffering in some way from being boiled alive, though. I don't imagine that's a pleasant experience just by having a body that evolved without a pain response.

      Actually it's very hard to kill a lobster, and stabbing it in the head is pointless. Lobsters and other invertebrates do not have a single brain, but several small things called ganglia. These are about the size of the ball in a ball point pen. An expert in lobster anatomy would be lucky to hit them. In switzerland they use specialist equipment to electrocute the lobster to death before cooking.
      Stabbing it in the head just causes more suffering.

  • @Light.1992
    @Light.1992 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1370

    I’ve always refused to eat them for this reason. Personally, I believe they do feel pain. Like all living creatures, the biological function of pain is to warn something is wrong. If pain wasn’t such a thing, animals would get harmed easily and die without even realising what is going on.
    Then... go on, lobsters don’t rot in minutes. There is no need to put a completely conscious one in a pot...! They could be stunned or made unconscious, or their nervous system could be somehow damaged so they don’t feel anything, and only then boiled.
    Exactly like slaughterhouse animals, the law doesn’t allow them to be bled to death before they are unconscious (shot in the head or electro stunned).
    We should be more respectful to creatures bred or caught to be our food... and avoid unnecessary suffering.

    I don't know if Australia actually has laws around boiling them alive, but I do know that killing them first, BEFORE boiling them is standard restaurant practice. They do this by cutting them in two right down the centre in one quick motion and then throwing them into a boiling pot. This is pretty much standard practice around Australia and the islands and is said to be the most humane way of dispatching them.

    Guys, there is a real simple solution to the "why not kill it before boiling it" and the "we shouldn't boil it alive" debate.... Just take a thin knife and stab right through their nervous system. It keeps them from feeling anything, and they don't run the risk of getting food poisoning. There is a TH-cam chef who uses this technique on almost all shellfish he cooks except for shrimp.

    • @joshuasanford6934

      Joshua Sanford I know what you're saying, and I'm not one of those animal activists that thinks we should all eat veggies. I'm merely trying to give a solution to the lobster issue that can be used so that people who believe the lobsters have complex feelings and shit can cook a lobster without it "feeling" the pain. Hope that clears up what I meant, I personally like my lobster grilled or steamed with either garlic or lemon.

      @fuzzyscarfandmittens4772 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +joseph smith Actually, that't not necessarily the case. Lobsters are very different than a pig or a chicken. There's a rudimentary brain in the head but it's got this kind of distributed nervous system with a parallel spinal cord, bridged connections between the two and ganglia all the way down. In other words most of it's brain is actually located in different places along the back. This is why we don't know if they truly can feel pain in the same way we can. Their nervous system is too primitive.
      So cutting through the head does not necessarily guarantee a clean death.

  • @DemonEyes23
    @DemonEyes23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +161

    So why not just kill the lobster immediately before cooking it? That's a practice that many places do follow. If you notice in some of the footage the lobster head has been split down the middle. Though it may move a bit afterwards, that is a dead lobster
