What I disliked about the movie from a male perspective (not having read the book) is the fact that she takes no accountability.
1.) She lied about her ex owning Root. The first visit to Root, she should have told her husband about him and introduced them.
2.) The second time at Root she lied again and went to the restroom hoping to see him. They were caught inside the restroom together.
3.) She lied about the tattoo meaning. Most man does not want to be married to a lady with a tattoo that symbolizing another man.
4.) She chased her husband when he asked for space because he was upset. She then walked in front of the edge of stairs and he pushed her down the stairs (he was wrong), but it appeared to be a reaction.
    5. ) Lily told her husband that she may still love another man.
6.) When she had an issue with her husband she then ran to her ex liver.
**The abuse was not warranted, but unless I missed something. I feel as if she purposely ruined her marriage. **

Yeah what he did was completely wrong and you can’t defend his actions. But she always made a bad choice instead of just telling him the truth

If I may, I think you might be missing the very important part - Lily is unreliable narrator in this movie and this is shown in the end, when all violence scenes she though were accidental, in reality were rage and violence.
And when it comes to telling truth or not, let’s be honest with ourselves - no one blames him for not telling the truth regarding his brother, at the same time, she is expected to tell everything about her first love to her husband (knowing their story wasn’t easy). Isn’t it everyone has the right to keep some things to themselves?
Regarding to whom she ran - did she have someone else she felt safe and understood with? It’s clearly shown that even her mother is not the biggest supporter of hers and given mother’s own marriage story, Lily’s choice is in reality is choice without a choice.
What I think you also might have missed is that there were some other red flags in the movie, e.g. private space issue - when you see someone’s number on a business card of your partner, how often do you purposely call without questioning the person first?
And it’s also very important that her husband is not “typical drunk or just generally evil guy”, because authors of violence can be gentle and beautiful and the cycle of abuse is a constant emotional rollercoaster. And the film shows it in a subtle way, giving us not just one more cliche but smth do discuss and reflect on.

That's because the movie is just surface level. The book is more detailed. There's graphic details in the book that were watered down in the movie.
