    I picked up that very same mower for $20 last year and it had been extremely abused. Bad fuel, corroded carb, broken pull rope, sludge for oil, no air filter and it had been sitting out in the weather for I don't know how long. I replaced or fixed the mechanical parts but was worried about that sludge in the engine. I drained it out, replaced it with 20% Marvel Mystery Oil and 80% 10W30 and ran it for about 5 hrs. then drained it again and it was thick and black but not nearly as bad. I did the same thing one more time and then filled it with 100% 10W30. The MMO cleaned the inside of that engine nicely and now she purrs. I use MMO in my fuel and oil, works for me but your mileage may vary!!

    In life, I have usually been disappointed after the few times I have bought new, high end products. They just never seem to perform to my high expectations for the amount of cash I parted with. More recently, I find that “high end”, “high price” seems to be more about brand recognition for once high quality brands that have devolved down to “bells and whistles” tacked onto a mediocre quality product in an attempt to justify the inflated price. Since my needs and interests are usually more about durability rather than high tech accessories, these type of products don’t catch my attention often. The few higher end products I own were obtained second (third, or even forth) hand and were obtained broken and I repaired it or gifted to me by generous people. I’d be hard pressed to pay $800 for a good, used riding mower; let alone a new push mower.

    • @HomeGaragechannel

      well said, second hand high end keeps you from paying too much and yet you still get what you want.

    I do my own maintenance. Blow off the deck and engine bay when done, keep the underside scraped and clean, change the oil 2X a year along with the filter, use ethanol free gas, change fuel filter and air cleaner, lube cables....Just takes a few minutes, with just this a mower will last many years. There's something satisfying about seeing that goopy black oil being drained. I've also started putting a bit of Marvel MO in the gas and oil, hopefully will help with the carbon buildup and sludge. Most importantly, run the engine dry before storage!!!!

    I have repaired and sold hundreds of mowers. The Honda is a premium quality mower. The issue is that the poor quality of fuel and the absurd lack of basic maintenance by the owner places it in the exact category with other brands. My personal opinion, only a misinformed person would pay $800 and up for a mower (engine) that inevitably end up in the same 55 gal. drum .

    I bought this same mower about 8 years ago. I perform regular maintenance annually with 2 oil changes per season. This year I’m planning on servicing hydro and adjust valves. I enjoy doing maintenance on my “toys” but I get frustrated when I have to fix it knowing how much care and preventing maintenance was done to the machine. I will miss Honda mowers in the future with its quality cut.

    I spent my whole life running and fixing other peoples stuff and my own and always tried to do the best job I could, whether it was at home or at a place on the goffer course, whether it was a dozer or a mower or a truck. Didn't matter. I got a bonus from a local pal I was running his stuff from and told him I'd pay him back. He got a little indignant and stuck his nose up and asked how I thought I could do that. I leveled him a scorcher eyeball to eyeball and said 'I'll take care of your blamed old STUFF' with plenty of emphysys on STUFF. Matters not whose or what. That's my story. Happy weekend.

    I know that if I didn't change the oil in my dads 20 year old Honda GX35 powered line trimmer then it would seize up so I often check the oil & if it's too low on oil then I just dump it out & refill the crankcase with new oil because it doesn't take very much oil !

    Yeah really it’s just like, just because it’s a Toyota and last hundreds of thousands of miles doesn’t mean you shouldn’t maintain them.
    Spending a lot of money to get a Honda mower doesn’t mean it’ll last with little to no maintenance.
    If you of course do actually maintain them they’ll last a very long time for sure. And to also answer the question, yes I work on everything I own. For the most part it’s all about paying someone else to do something that I could easily do the same way for free. And I have a lot of trust issues when it comes to something like that. So I would just normally do it myself and if it was something I really couldn’t do or wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it myself, that’s when I would send it off to someone else to fix it!

    Great video! Honda mowers are/were very expensive. If you don’t do anything to keep it going you’ve wasted a lot of money. I’ve seen people get really flat robbed buying used mowers. Especially, used junky lawn tractors. My father was very picky about how the mowers were used and taken care of. Generally, growing up; our mowers always worked. My dad would flip if he knew there are mowers that say you never change the oil. Just add. That’s nuts!

    No maintenance with battery power equipment! Really?
    Why then I ditched battery powered equipment for petrol power equipment?
    Oh, right. Battery powered was constantly breaking, the power was pathetic, the batteries last fukc all, after two sets of batteries I had to stop because... how does one recharges them on the field?
    Anyone asking, battery powered equipment is more expensive to buy, to run, and will not get the job done as quickly nor as effectively as petrol.
    I'll deal with oil changes every six months rather than the frustration of not getting things done.
    You're absolutely right, my personal tools are very well taken care of, someone else's tools I'm working for, they pay me to get a job done, not to babysit tools, if the tools break or get damaged, I'm not the one reaching for the wallet, I don't give a f. All I care is getting the job done and getting paid.

I have installed a new airfilter, fuelfilter and lines, cleaned the gas tank and carburettor and tried adjusting the governor. Still it keeps revving up and down, but not as much as before. i can see the governor stabilising the rpm and it somewhat stabilises after maybe about 10-30 seconds.

    • @johnhyde5841
      @johnhyde5841 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'll add my dos centavos here and say no, but you should still check it. That usually just makes them run rough. You need 4 things for it to run. Fuel, spark, air and compression. If you don't have a meter, you can check for compression by picking up your machine by the pull rope handle. If it quickly pulls out you might not have good compression. Or you can pull the plug out and put you finger over the hole and pull the rope. You should feel it pushing your finger.
      To check it it's a fuel or spark issue, put a little fuel in the carb throat and see if it starts. If it starts and runs, you should be OK. If it starts and dies, then you have a fuel issue, either bad fuel or the carb isn't pulling it. If it doesn't start at all then you might have a spark issue. Pull the plug and ground it out on the engine head and see if it sparks. If not try a new plug. If you still have no spark then it may be the ignition coil. And that's all I have to say about that.

      @HomeGaragechannel easy peasy, prolly just fuel that sat in the Texas sun and went bad, possibly gumming up the carb a bit

    • @HomeGaragechannel
      @HomeGaragechannel  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the reading was done with the pull rope. Using a drill gets a reading close to 150 PSI.

      @@HomeGaragechannel ah... ok. That wasn't shown (was it?), so I thought the compression was bad. Carry on. Never mind the peanut gallery.
