- Levels of E-Coli in the Thames have been found to be 27 times the acceptable quality - just days before the Henley international regatta.
Elite rowers at the event have been advised to take precautions after a campaign group tested the water quality in the Henley mile where the race will take place.
But Thames Water accused the River Action group of being alarmist - insisting they had carried out their own tests which had given "reassuring" results.

Have the politicians have a bath in it since they think it's ok😷🤮
they already had a bath in it, they were all Tories - and now it is polluted for 15 years
And still the water companies sail on.
Sewage ridden watercourses, polluted deliberately, and still the water companies award themselves large bonuses and shareholders dividends while lying through their teeth. - this is pure greed at the expense of the environment and us all .
Yeah, and they've run up massive debts that were supposed to go into investing new infrastructure. Instead, it was funnelled out in dividends.
Why isn’t the government investing in the water industry? That’s how privatisation works in every other sector. Who’s building all the new railways? The government. Does the government get to see any return on its investment? No of course not. The government will pay a subsidy for running trains over those new tracks it built and any profit goes to the private company.
How are the razor clams found in the Thames that the Tories were touting as a brexit bonus?
The Spoots are fine ,😂 The folk that eat them on the ither hand 👎
Never heard Sunak even mention this once
Probably affect his shareholding positions.
I try to imagine Government Meetings since 1980s and Thatchers privatisation plan…..
1990s …..” Q : Erm…you know that idea we had to create long term investment to upgrade our water / sewage systems? How’s that going ? A: Dunno…..”
2000s ……” Q: Anyone know if we are doing anything about the sewage issue ? We’ve got more and more houses and the population is growing. Are we expanding capacity to deal with it ? A : I’m not sure , I do know that foreign shareholders are getting paid big dividends though , so it must be ok. “
2010s…..” Q : I just wondered. Do you think we should check up on all these water companies and make sure they are investing properly in our sewage systems? I’m a bit worried about capacity and future problems. A: Nah….it’ll be fine. Market forces will look after the problem. If they weren’t doing it properly then they would have gone out of business by now”
2020s ….” Q : Ok , I know we’ve got the Covid pandemic and all that but I think we had better have a bit of a look at this sewage issue. There’s this Irish singer and some surfers starting to bang on about it. Should we check that we have enough capacity. I’ve heard reports that we pump raw sewage into the sea and rivers. A….just ignore them….the public won’t bother with it. My mate is the CEO of Thames Water and he told me in the golf course last week that shareholders are really happy with how things are going”
2024 ….. “ Q Erm…..guys….. I think we have a bit of a problem. They haven’t actually been investing in more capacity. It turns out that it’s cheaper to pay the fines than it is to invest. What shall we do? A …look there’s an election on , let’s make some false promises for the future 50 billion between now and 2050 should do it “
2050 “ Q ….erm….has anyone checked to see whether the water companies actually got round to investing in more sewage capacity? I’m looking out the window and the Thames looks dead and devoid of any wildlife , people are throwing up when they get near it. A…..It’s nothing, it’s just that we’ve had a lot of rain recently “
2080 Breaking news……England decide to re-nationalise water. 30 year investment plan with yearly check ups announced. Taxpayers happy to foot the bill because they at last know the job will get done and they will smash the Government at the polling booth if they don’t do their job properly.
2080 First moves to privatise water announced. Foreign investors express early interest in the new cash cow.
Oh it's important now it affects the rich kids!!
Privatisations going great, thanks Margaret Thatcher!
BBC stops comments on this national disaster.
I have to buy a plenty of water for cooking, ext.
When i called to Thames Water about compensation, even to find out what they done to solve th
e problem .
They told, that never heard about it . And , they drink a water from the taps.
So, i decided to stop paying water bill.
Our public utility companies were & are the backbone of the country... It's time to bring them back in-house under public ownership...
I believe there’s a swimming festival there in mid July!
It wouldnt be a regatta without sh1ts in the river but they normally are in the boats and the hospitality tents.
Are the treatment expensive for this?
If u mean for e.coli not really.
Simply said, they have an endotoxin and an exotoxin. They release the exotoxin, which makes u sick. If a doctor were to describe antibiotics u would kill them but this would release a huge amount of endotoxins (part of the bacteria structure) which in turn puts u in much greater trouble, can litteraly kill u (not very likely but seriously u will go into the hospital and u will be much much worse of)
So the treatment is to sit that out for a few days. Bad news e coli means cholera, salmonella and more could be there too
Well yes, but no.
Sewage is just being dumped, sometimes it's not even raining. Our sewages are basically Victorian and in many places, they haven't been improved and updated since.
Hugely, because we built a cheap sewerage system initially and kept it cheap.
All waste goes into the same pipe, whether it's rain water, rinsing in the sink water, shower water, toilet water or industrial (though some of them have to treat their waste before sending to the sewer). So when it rains, the system's overwhelmed. A lot of water treatment relies on gravity and bacteria, which means there's a minimum period of time required to be effective, it can't be rushed just because there's a lot of rain, so they end up just dumping it all.
"Nature" can "treat" it, but it takes a toll, destabilising the biosphere, whilst needing even more time than our dedicated treatment plants, thus we have polluted water ... where we pull water from for drinking. That's gonna be the scary one, when sewerage is pulled into the pipes feeding the taps.
@@ChrispyNut Don't forget about the dumping outside of storm surges!
@@ingni123456 That's relatively easy to fix and sufficiently infrequent as to not be a huge issue, like the shared sewerage system.
inb4: No, I'm not defending that practice, just contextualising for why not mentioned (it's a YT comment, not a peer-review paper).
Is regatta a synonym for the runs?
Sadly it appears that most of the water companies are not fit for purpose.... unless of course they only exist to make profits for their shareholders.
Sh!ts rowing the boats, sh!ts swimming all round the boats . . . plus ça change . . .
UK are immune to ecoil, and contaminated water given all the #Azzkissing they do with the Riyal Family 😂
I thought word has it that it's a lettuce problem ? Good advice I won't be getting in it. Although I am still drinking tap water.
I pay water rates.
It's a conspiracy. Truss's revenge.
Turd Island, aptly named.
Oh, right, So Thames water's response is basically "By measuring where you're racing of course you're getting higher results. Test further away from there and you'll get results that are just fine."
They should cancel all rowing races where the water is not safe to swim in.
Sewage over flow in case of heavy rain is often the cause of high E. Coli levels. Separation of sewage and rainwater is crucial to avoid this and avoid a flush through the sewage plants. The sewage plant operation is not stable if the water feed raises by a factor 3 -10 in the hours after the passing of a 3 -4 hours of steady heavy rain.
Sewage water separation is expensive, invisible the citizens compared to schools & hospitals and slow with project durations of 4 -10 years before an effect can be seen. That is why it falls to the bottom of the political agendas.
I wouldn't trust TW as far as I could throw them. I don't hold out much hope but maybe Labour will do something
Even if they did, it wouldn't much matter because they're not changing the underlying economic system, so it'll keep cropping up elsewhere, without addressing most of the places such things have already cropped up.
We were doomed when "New Labour" accepted and adopted the "trickle-down" economics of Thatcher/Reagan, letting the wealth redistribution ramp up faster, leading to the stratospheric inequality we're suffering today.
Labour = no change
A fresh pollution source will purify over about a mile, as long as it's not so thoroughly polluted as to be dead.
you get what you vote for in henley
Raw Tory sewage
It's not just sewage. It's M&S sewage...
Dont worry water bosses will still get their bonus and cosey up to the tories... dont foget to vote for this to continue on 4th july.....😂
What a palaver.
Shareholders and senior executives of Thames Water have abused their stewardship of this company. It's therefore quite in order that Thames Water be renationalised without payment of any compensation whatsoever. Then other greedy, money grabbing companies will think carefully about their behaviour.
It’s not the water companies problem. It’s the governments problem.
Do you know the difference between the privatised water industry and every other privatised industry? Government stopped investing in the water industry.
How the UK has fallen, now an international embarrassment
We can trust Thames water, can't we?
These are probably actors too! What a disgrace Channel 4 is.
so are farmers using the thames to irrigate their salad? good job give the rest of the country ecoli

So God hates the aristocratic class then
Britain on the highway to the 19th century, thanks to the Tories and Labour
Cor..spot the black person..if you can..😅😅😅😮
I could not care less that these private school rowing teams get E-Coli
WHo did you pay off for this "news"?

Definiately not.
Far-right popularism feeds off this kind of economic climate, but they make things way worse, always worse, except a teeny tiny minority.
@@ChrispyNut Vote SDP then!
@@ResoundGuy5 They're awful, well, they're bad, the SDP guy in neighbouring constituency spent most of his speaking time at hustings saying "I don't why this is so complicated, it's just common sense, I'll do the common sense thing" along with other similarly vapid twaddle.
SDP are still NeoLibs!
@@ChrispyNut vote Labour or tory and get more of exactly the same as what we have had for the last 60 years!!! 💩
@@johnross2924 Which is why I've only voted Labour once, in 2019 and not voted Tory since I deleted a lot of the garbage I was brought up to believe.
But Reform is just the same, economically and the migrants are being scapegoated for lack of investment, horrendous wealth inequality and as a distraction from those truths, just as Rainbow folk are, anything to keep us divided, so we can't force change.
They might actually do something about it if it negatively impacts the toffs
Posh folk paying for voting tory?
