Been reenacting for decades. Haversacks and shot bags all purpose items, for woodsman, militia, and soldiers. I find a slit pouch handy to pick up fire starting stuff picked up a long the trail. Enjoyed the vid.
Great video and kit. I hope to go to the Pathfinder school this summer. Only an hour away from me in OH. I am getting a haversack soon. Looks like it will be great for day hikes and such. Very nice belt pouch. That repair kit is ingenious. Thanks for sharing.

Thats a good not overloaded comprehensive day kit. I've found once you can't close the flap on a haversack, just get a backpack.

Great video, Sarge! My only complaint about a haversack is that there isn't room to put your jacket or carry rain gear. Actually it really isn't a complaint because if you stuck rain gear or a jacket in your haversack it would be so bulky it would be in the way. To my way of thinking a haversack is no good by itself, but is great when used in conjunction with a small day pack for your jacket and/or rain gear. After living twenty years in Southeast Alaska I don't go anywhere without rain gear and a wool or fleece sweater or jacket... the stuff really IS a matter of life or death. The haversack is handy for things you want to get to more often without taking your pack off. A small water bottle, snacks,a spare knife, cordage, and spare ammunition are nice in a haversack.

I love using a small bag when just out for a few hours. I could not find a old school haversack type when I was building my kit a few years back, so I went modern and got a molle bag. It contains a a brew kit, "hi tech" fire kit, FAK, knife sharpener, belt knife, leatherman tool and a water bottle + some fun stuff like a sling shot with ball bearings for ammo.
Since I love making my fire with flint and steel I keep the kit for that in a separate pouch on my belt. Another molle type pouch is a magazine trhow pouch that I use for stuff I gathe ron my way like tinder materials, quartz (ther eis no flint here) for fire making, berries etc...

Patrick is a good man, a great friend to have, and a awesome craftsman. He made me something basic pouches and stuffed them full of kit when my pack was stolen out of my car while on base. He makes so many beautiful items, just have to save up to get some of it lol. Thanks for sharing Sargent.

Inconvient Camping Thanks man
When I was just a kid , granny made me one lots bigger from a burlap potato sack . Grandpa saved me his prince Albert tobacco cans to keep my hooks, ammo, kitchen matches , in I carried a cut down double bit axe in my belt , good pocket knife , carried a carbide lamp , carbide , water . I could build a fire on wet ground with just a little carbide. I went to work paying taxes at 13 , bought a night light brand , headlamp , then a wheat light with a 6volt battery . On days off , I stayed in the woods night and day .

similar to mine. I find cheap dental floss to be extremely handy, very compact if you take the roll out of the plastic box. I also carry 20-30' of mono fishing line to tie leaders onto the bankline or dental floss. bankline and dental floss are the duct tape of the outdoors. Always be redundant with the fire making. I keep one tethered to me (and knife) and in pack. The small ust ferros are as easy to use as the "magic wand", the built in striker makes it easy to direct (and is one handed use) without accidentally overrunning your stike into the tinder bundle.

just recently finished my haversack and matching belt pouch! i dabble in a little leatherworkin for fun!
U got some great living man, here in the dutch u got almost no great outdoors.. i always want to go and survive for at least a week. But the rules here are kinda tight,. I hope u shoot a video with some advice for me . Thnxx keep it going man.!

Well don't bother, they're useless, well except for a stroll in the woods on a sunny afternoon. lol
Another use in the city, I keep one in my other, Duluth, classy man purse so if I buy anything in town or want to take diner home, I have an extra bag!
Just a thought of an add in. A backup for sharpening your edges. Emery cloth, its small, and no weight, and costs next to nothing. It can be used to sharpen scandinavian and flat grinds only, convex and dbl bevel you can't. You need a piece of emery cloth that can wrap around you blad. Pinch the edge firmly between your forefinger and thumb with the spine pointing down and draw the knife through. I works, I tried it on one of my Moras at home. I wanted to see if it would more in a safe environment and not at a time when you life is on the line. In is a pain in the ass doing it this way and takes a bit of time, but I think the pros outweigh the cons. Just a note this is for sharpening an edge not honing, it removes steel from the blade so I wouldn't practice this on a knife that doesn't need sharpening.

hell yea seeing other peoples kit is the best way to prepare your own there is always someone that thinks of something that you dont ! mine is based off of some of my needs and then a great many other peoples kits !

Great video man, my purse is made out of an old surplus messenger bag from some unknown country. I absolutely love haversack carry, even if dave invented them.

Who makes the trail tarp and how big is yours? Where can I get one?
I like haversacks and even the Maxpedition Versipack type bags, but when it comes down to it I always seem to go back to my daypack. I have a lightweight linen haversack that I keep rolled up in my daypack so that I can just throw it on for gathering things off of the landscape, but I just find my daypack to be a lot more comfortable for carrying my kit in.
Right on man. My scout pack is a very close second to the haversack as well.
I found some great haversacks on ebay. Just do some searching and you can save a bundle on the price of stocking up your kit. Great video!

Got a lot of respect for Dave, and as we know these things are ever evolving, but mine looks an awful lot more like yours. Logical, concise setup. Fills many needs in a light rig. Mine doesn't have a whip stick either, man :) Sensibly included a tarp, too. Looks familiar... Nice little kit bro. Dig your channel.

I was just wondering what your opinion was on a magnesium flint stick. I prefer them to flint and steel, for the magnesium is its own tinder and becomes an open flame to catch larger or damp tender
james gillespie My opinion is.....the mag part of them are pretty good. If you carry an additional ferro rod then your golden......the rod part of them things tend to be very small and inferior

Nice video of the Haversack and belt pouch contents. I am a firm believer in the saying: "the best survival kit is the one you have on you when you need it". That's why it's important to have crucial items on your person at all times (knife on belt and E.D.C. items in your pants pocket or belt pouch). Just in case you lose or misplace the haversack. You made a good point about that.

Thanks buddy. The tarp is a trail tarp I got from Rob at canteenshop about 6-7 years ago.

+Bluelineknives Without a doubt man. I will carry this basic kit at my courses just so I have things to do demos and what not, but I don't carry all that much anymore in it typically if im by myself and have it. I definitely don't carry all of the fire stuff

Say Heah Sarge, Close but no cigar, I made mine from a closeout camo flap over purse that looks masculine, with pockets and main compartment ad even the flop over holds gear that's zippered with side compartments, I carry my compass, cooking set, cottage, binoculars Firestarter which sometimes include road flares and my space blanket or tarp. I also carry a pouch on my web belt, Yeah, When I go lite, I take it, Good to have. I might of forgot to mention like first aid, But at any one time atleast my 5'C's.

Sashiku's Art , my advice would be to go for it, don't worry about buying expensive kit that u'll probably be told you need (the more skills you know,the less you have to carry), stick to a good solid knife (Mora companion is a great knife and its only $20-ish), an axe, a tarp (i started with a cheap groundsheet), a method of lighting fire (you could start with a cheap cigarette lighter or get yourself a fire steel, and a nice warm sleeping bag and a nice thick ground mat. If you learn the basics of bushcraft (i recommend binge watching everything Ray Mears has ever made) And practice the basic skills like setting up your tarp, getting a good, sustainable fire going and preparing clean drinking water and good food outdoors then you'll have a great base skillset to develop from. Learn about what interests you. I for example like learning about the kind of skills our ancestors would have used, before any complex technology. I aim to be confident that i could go out into the wilderness with only a knife and an axe and live no problem for however long i needed. I'm getting there slowly.
It will take time though, so i would recommend getting a friend or partner to go out into the wilderness with you, that way you can both help keep each other safe which is important because nature is ruthless if you're not careful.
Take small steps, start in your back garden practicing in a safe place, then spend time wandering around the natural environment around where you are simply getting used to it, then maybe stop for lunch, set up your tarp however you like then get a fire going and cook some food. I wouldn't suggest staying overnight until you are confident in basic wilderness skills but if you choose to do so then make sure theres someone with you and you could quickly get help if you need it.

Has anyone ever shown these guys Bic Lighters? 6 of them and yer good for a decade. I do like the care taken in the prep. but Im a smoker and depend on fire every 10 mins or so. Bic Lighter. Works every time
