3:30 is omg. I'm running out of compliments for this guy. All that hi hat pedal work on the up beat while all the rest of this madness is going on? Seriously? Raw talent in it's purest form. Guys legendary status and has years of development left. These charts would look scary af
Arghhhh it's so nice to finally see someone bring this idea to fruition. I've thought about it for years but it'd be soooooo annoying to navigate every other note around the pedal hat playing it that way.. I'm too lazy to learn to play the pedal hat off the beat like that:(
That's actually a pretty common thing to do for drummers, and it's not insanely difficult. What's really unique about his arrangements in this song is the 3 to 4 polyrhythm and also the dynamics control, those ghost notes and floor tom flams are insane.
Don't know how many drummers can actually do this. It's literally genius. This is just not normal. But what's also impressive is that it works as a song. Lovely stuff
I've been listening to Leprous for awhile and Baard is one of my favorite drummers, but only recently have I noticed some similarities to Gavin Harrison. In the sense that he's got the ability to be a power drummer and a finesse drummer at the same time with a really fresh fusion style. Impeccable timing and stick control too
Encaspulating, vivid, brilliant performance from every member involved in the creation of Malina. Edit: Every time I hear 3:30 I am reminded that Leprous is one of the most prolific bands of the genre right now. I am absolutely in love.
I'm in prison right now, unfairly accused and waiting for trial. There are no words to explain the level of all kinds of deprivation imprisoned people lives in. Having a moment to listen to this is a tiny little reminder that I am still myself and I won't be defeated so easily.
@@oscargill423 i`m "just" a guitarist :), I try to count every measure separately to figure out whats going on, but so many cool things in the drumming just throw me off, the triplet feel in the intro, or the mix of even and odd meters. it does make sense to count most of the song as 8/8+9/8=17/8 so the pattern repeats, thanks for clarifying. I now break it to groups of 4/4/4/5 which make it a bit easier for me to count in real time. but yah , this song is above my pay-grade for sure xD

I love the fact that his ride (which he wantonly uses as a crash to great effect) is broken. It is cracked around the bell and has a chunk removed out of the side. And yet it sounds fantastic...is that some trickery in the control booth, or are we all too conditioned to want that sweet ride sounds from a Zildjian K so that we forget that as drummers, we can hit anything we like in time?
No matter how many times I watch this, it just blows me away! The way he plays with time. The absolute precision of execution. I just bought a Roland V-drum kit to add to my Tama Rockstars(just for bells and whistles) but this is the first song I will learn and there’s no bells or whistles. Just some of the all-out, most jamminest rock and roll drums ever recorded.
I thought the same first time I saw such a carpet underneath a drumkit and seeing them more often made me wonder if it had a special quality to it, as it appears here yet again :p
Can't help but get inspired by Baard. Have to go straight to my kit after typing this and play this song.. and the rest of the album! I just start smiling when i play his stuff, it's too much fun and so good!
Malina really grew on me over time, at first I was disappointed but by now I'd consider it to be one of their best records, just with a different approach. Though the drumming on The Congregation was more interesting and.. ridiculous
I wasn't exactly disappointed. I definitely prefer their work like The Congregation, but this song and others are the reason why I welcome their other albums. At least Leprous doesn't use the excuse of "bands have to evolve" to become into mainstream sound ( *cough* Coldplay)
That telephone used as a microphone technique is amazing! Have one lying around I rewired myself to an XLR. I used it on vocals for special effects, now I gotta try this on drums.
Leprous doesn't do the lo-fi thing, aside from older moments where Einar did some Opeth telephone vocals...fortunately the only time they ever did that. Glad to hear the full definition of this man's amazing kit.
Can a sound engineer explain what that red land line phone adds to the mic mix? I'm assuming it's being recorded on the other end? Amazing music and drumming! That Pearl Reference kit is just insane!
@@LoggR84 This is driving me up a wall. Can you pick out any groupings? I can count most of it in a full 17 but having a hard time figuring out his kick and snare timing.
Pearl Reference Original (not Pure) is freaking awesome -- power, projection, cut, slice, and tone: hybrid shells that approach if not achieve drum perfection.
STELLAR FUCKIN' DRUMMING !! But am I the ONLY one to notice the rotary phone headset being used as an underside snare mic ?? GODDAMN ! As a musician and gearslut/Engineer I'm extremely analytic and blown by this method and all around cool video! BRAVO

Yeah the drummer from TesseracT, Jay Postones, uses it a lot as well. Pretty sweet.
That's actually a pretty common thing to do for drummers, and it's not insanely difficult. What's really unique about his arrangements in this song is the 3 to 4 polyrhythm and also the dynamics control, those ghost notes and floor tom flams are insane.

Been thinking this too!
Even 100 years after I am buried I won't be able to get this song out of my mind. Ain't even mad.
Freezing Moon same
What is the time signature of this?
Baard: "Yes"
What's the most overused comment on youtube?

17/16 in case you were wondering
I've been waiting for this!! He plays with so much energy. Every time I watch him play it makes me want to play
that's so true!
Air drumming FTW 🤟🏼
He does, I love drummers that play with that much energy. The former drummer from Candiria, Kenneth Schalk drums very similar.
just do it
Same, until I try, then I go back to remembering that I used to play drums

Definitely best on the album. Phenomenal work.
This guy takes songs that sound like they should have a simple beat and makes them so utterly fascinating. I'm endlessly amazed by him.
I'm speechless. How, I ask, how is this even possible?
The groovy final part caught me by surprise when hearing the record
RIGHT? Everyone on my commute home probably knows me as "that guy blasting this album while singing his heart out."
vilken enastående trummis det är ett privilegium att få höra vad han spelar och att försöka hänga med, fortsätt rocka mannen
Man Baard's grooves are so inspiring
That energy is amazing! That floor tom next to the snare is such an amazing addition, really gives the drumming a super nice extra bass sound.
5:25 That outro is my favourite section of the album. Can't get enough
3:17 What a well placed dish in this part ❤❤❤
Baard and Eloy. These guys are the pinnacle of modern metal drumming right now.
My entire mood changed while watching this. Inspiration is such a powerful thing.
Love the heaviness and energy of this song and the concept of shifting snare and bass drum hits by triplets!

Those ghost notes are the crux of all of it, friggen righteous.
Awesome sound, awesome playing :) . You are a genius!
would love to hear that what that phone microphone sounds like Solo'd AMAZING WORK! AMAZING PLAYING!

massive snare sound... amazing. those flams explode!

Raphaël Doursenaud not sure if joking or serious. I can't hear it, in case you're serious.
I'm pretty sure it's not used in this track but the placement is sensible for a natural full kit low-fi sound.

I believe engineers use it to capture the resonate snare head better. No idea why though
it brings filth. no, really. really really really strange mics have very limited capacity, but also a signature tone a standard mic cannot provide.
