I mean context is always key.. Musl talks about theoretically using thermonuclear explosions on the poles in order to begin terraforming. Very much different
I'm not an expert, but wouldn't their be a slight possibility that the explosion could alter the axis of the earth? or slightly increase the height of the tides?
I would expect there to be some measurable tide alterations. Perhaps an interesting discussion to consider if the moon were larger/smaller or closer/further and the effects.
For a 1.7 kiloton nuke to change the orbit of the moon enough to affect the tides/center of mass (barycenter)? Under the best conditions, the nuke could accelerate the moon away from/towards earth with roughly .0000000000000000000000969N(?) I'm not too sure of my units of measurement here, but it's insanely small, and it's affect on earth will be even smaller. It's probably easier to write out the math involved than actually detecting the miniscule amount of change in tides/barycenter.
@@melvinfeenstra7037 Probably not. But a 1.7 kiloton nuke is a "small" nuke. i have no doubt if we used all the nukes in the world we could detect the change of orbit, but i doubt it would have any real-world effects (other than blasting tons of rocks into the space between the Earth and moon)

I think it was a very reckless idea in the first place. There might have been unforeseen consequences. We do not have an alternative to earth, so should stop gambling with universal self-destruction
I dunno, it seems a little less reckless than detonating nukes on earth and that’s been done many other times and at much larger scales. There’s been over 2000 nukes detonated on earth, where we live. I think I’d rather them be on the moon.
@@mcearl8073 generally nukes are a very bad idea. Considering the precision of the earth's rotation and revolution, with the constant massive gravitation pull it takes, I fear a force powerful enough to disturb that precision can leave to unforeseen catastrophies
I’m no rocket scientist or anything but I don’t think that’s what would happen. It would end up being pulled around by the moons gravity and slingshot somewhere else, possibly back to earth or at least back in earths orbit
