Contrary to that estonian idiot, no. They could legally not do that. The video might suggest a confusion made between territorial waters and EEZ (exclusive economic zone) which are 2 different things. To quote Wikipedia for the simplest definition I could find: 'the difference between the territorial sea and the exclusive economic zone is that the first confers full sovereignty over the waters, whereas the second is merely a "sovereign right" which refers to the coastal state's rights below the surface of the sea. The surface waters, as can be seen in the map, are international water' To put it into detail: in Russian waters, aka territorial waters belonging to Russia, they could do whatever they want and you are not allowed to pass through them. The limit for this area is 20km from the shore. In an EEZ you are not allowed to fully restrict water transit. The best you could do is set up stationary objectives, like oil platforms, but that's all. A slightly particular case is with the Kerch Strait and the new Crimean bridge
@@estoniaboodoingmapping1095 Russia has been participating in proxy wars with the US yes, but over the last couple decades they've been almost exclusively defensive ones (propping up allied governments against US proxies) while the US has been on the offense... it's not so much a choice on the part of the Russians in most of these case as an obligation if they wish to maintain or enhance their influence, and prevent total US hegemony (which they most certainly do wish to do). Worth noting also that those proxy wars haven't been going half badly for Russia over the last half decade plus. US backed "rebels" (led most prominently by Al-Qaeda in Syria, though they like to avoid mentioning that bit) have almost completely failed to oust Russia ally Assad in Syria, with Russian intervention having pretty thoroughly helped crush that threat by now (Syria is currently mopping up the last remnant in Idlib province), the US backed Saudi-led Coalition has failed to put down the Iranian aligned Houthis in Yemen, and the US backed attempted coup in Venezeula flopped inside of a week, with Russian/Chinese ally Maduro retaining power to this day, despite US backed pretender Guadios constant posturing (which has gotten him nothing less but thrown out of the leadership of his own opposition, let along the country as a whole). If anybody is losing money on dumb proxy wars they aren't winning, it's the US, who would probably be well advised to look inward and invest some of that money in public healthcare and education instead.

The claim of south china sea by China was published by the ROC government in 1947. It had 11 dashes, so it was called 11-dash line. After ROC fled to Taiwan and PRC controlled Chinese mainland, PRC kept ROC's claim, but the premier Zhou Enlai removed two dashes in the Gulf of Tonkin, because PRC and Vietnam has already made a more precise territory agreement there, so since then it's called 9-dash line. Sometimes it's called 10-dash line because of the dash added to include Taiwan. ROC is still keeping the 11-dash line as their territory claim. Neither ROC nor PRC have filed a formal and specifically defined claim to the area within the dashes, so it's a pretty vague claim. During international talks involving the Spratly islands, PRC and ROC have cooperated with each other since both have the same claims.
@Alex Mercer what is misinformation about it? The South China Sea is rather different than the Fawklands or French Polynesia. Those claims are universally known. The Spralty Islands have only recently become really important to these countries. So now they are all trying to insist they claim them. China's claim is foolish, Vietnam is in the same boat. I don't know historically who claims them. And when I say historically claims them, I mean documents that prove they own the islands from that time. Not someone saying they own it. What should happen is that the sea becomes international waters. But it's not like the South China Sea is the same as the UKs, France's, Netherlands, USs, Germany's, Russian, etc. International claims from Islands they own.
Ok, china lost the case against Philippines, about the part of spratly island claimed by Philippines and China, in the international arbitrary Court. But china didn't recognize the decision.
Also the UN convention on the law of the sea literally says that the islands cannot be artificial and must be capable of sustaining human habitation by themselves. So yes. It is definitively illegal.

while taiwan's claims are legally identical to the prc's due to legal quirks, in reality, they are not tho. Not all maps discussing this even include Taiwan's claims, but Taiwan's de facto claims (ignoring the lack of recognition), are still ridiculously huge. The surface waters, as can be seen in the map, are international water'
To put it into detail: in Russian waters, aka territorial waters belonging to Russia, they could do whatever they want and you are not allowed to pass through them.

According to UN Convention of the Law of the Sea they can't.
We are talking about an EEZ here, not territorial waters.
That means that Russia has exclusive rights to manage resources there, but it can't tax the area, nor they can stop ships that swim through... unless these ships are pirate ships or try to exploit the resources inside the EEZ, then they can stop the ships, but still not tax.

The UN : China, how large do you want your EEZ to be?
China : yes
America: *WAIT! THAT'S ILLEGAL!* 😒
