Take my tip: as I always do with my own models, run your shunter in for one lap in each direction light engine first. That way, you can see whether or not your new Ruston Shunter is good at slow speeds to begin with. To test the engine with a load, give him a few small open wagons and a Guard's Van. Remember, as you sensibly do, to run the engine and wagons slowly over points in both directions to keep derailments at bay. Don't let my Mum see that or she'll be jealous, lol. Yellow is her favourite colour. Your new Ruston Shunter looks very handsome. My own new model engine, Becky, of Rapido status, is smoother and quieter performance wise, and she has a bright firebox glow. Watch out for my Hunslet Engine video this Sunday.
Looks so lovely in this livery, thanks for doing this review, now I really want one of these Rustons. There are so many great British models out there I'm struggling to decide what to get. 😅
What a beautiful locomotive. It's a pity it hasn't lights though, but the beautiful livery makes up. But I am happy to see it can take the points most of the time. Greetings from a new subscriber 🙋♂️ Erik
Thank you very much for subscribing! I did some shunting today with it before work and I find the occasional point frog stalling slightly irritating but these are very old points. I imagine if it were DCCfitted with a stay alive the performance would be fantastic. Like my green 48DS the performance on my HM2000 always seems fairly to scale but my old Hornby red knob controller can make it go (probably) unhealthily quick. I feel like the lack of lights is a cop out given how long it's taken to produce. I'll hold my tongue on the full extent of what I think on the topic now though now because I don't have time to be dealing with any toxicity rofl.
@@Beaglington I have the same issues with my Peckett W4, which I totally adore but it could do with a capacitor. It needs a certain speed to get over points, and my old Lima points are not worse than my brand new Hornby or recent Trix points. But I think this is typical for all 0-4-0. I have a Piko TGK2, it was even more expensive than my Peckett and it could do with a capacitor as well. I keep telling myself I will put capacitors in all of my locomotives, but I will have to look more close into this on which ones to get and how to install them. Have a nice Sunday 🙋♂️ Erik
When I do the next episode of Beaglington-On-Sea I'm sure we'll see what Smutpuss makes of it. Alex at the Desk has been warned "if it ain't broke, don't glue it! (Or yourself!)
I got them at a shop called The Works, they have a sticky pad on the bottom but they are so sticky that when I removed them off card kits they took the printing odd with them.
@Londontransportduck It only came into stock recently on Hornby's website and in shops, but it took longer to get it here because I had to wait to get it dispatched from the UK and then through customs and then the Irish Post. But it's still three years since it was announced that it is finally available. It also doesn't upset me, because I now finally have one xD
@Londontransportduck This particular liveried version of the Ruston 88DS in North British Distillery livery has only been available since about the start of April 2024, the BR blue version has been out since November 2023 I think, and the two green versions arrived in between. Hornby first showed a painted model of this version as far back as February 2021 and it made a few appearances on display at exhibitions too, but it only arrived into stock this spring.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to finding time to run it again soon, maybe do some shunting again too.

It really does look very good but still an odd decision to leave the windows at the back blanked out.

You forgot two tests. Alex at the desk getting glue over it and the paws of death from Smutpuss? Will you do them next video?

May I ask what are those bees on your layout? They're quite cute.
I got them at a shop called The Works, they have a sticky pad on the bottom but they are so sticky that when I removed them off card kits they took the printing odd with them.
