I feel for this song as you commented. It's good to hear the song but , like me you also focused on her subtle body sways along with her voice delivery that told the story with so much personal emotion. That's spiritual in that the embodiment of that soul singing touches not the fleshly you, but the inward part of you. This was awesome!
This song was for Dr. Dre he was very abusive towards Michel'le, and she put her heart in soul into this song. Also he is the father of one of her kids. Dr. Dre is not a nice guy how everyone claims him to be he's crazy
This is one of my favorite songs but its so hard to listen to it the same way after seeing her story. 😭😭😭 Your analysis is spot on for not knowing the background. You really picked up on her emotion and her truth. 💔
This song was personal for her if you watch her movie surviving Compton dr. Dre whom she was with for years and has a child by used to beat the hell out of her and cheat on her a lot all throughout the relationship. During this particular song he choked her in the booth and threatened to beat her because she didn’t want to finish the song. She then got with suge knight and had baby with him but he ended up beating her putting her in the hospital with a broken jaw and etc.
I was in 9th grade when this came out and I'm telling you, Istill love Michel'le and every girl in my neighborhood swore they was her trying to sing this song.
She was involved with Dre. and had a baby by him. Then she got involved with Suge Knight and had a baby by him. You should watch her "Unsung". It's deep. Had me in tears what she went through with both of them.
Jack, you are very intuitive. The way you picked up on her "struggling" through the song; she definitely was. Her passion was very real and quite heartbreaking, because the man that she was with at the time was using her for a human punching bag (literally). That's right. Your boy, Dr. Dre was a certified woman beater. Look up a movie called Surviving Compton. That is Michelle's side of the story (which she had every right to tell since Dre conveniently left her out of Straight Outta Compton altogether). But yes, these vocals were coming from a very real place. This is one of the most vocally moving songs I've ever heard by the way. Every time I hear it, it gets the same reaction out of me. I just love it. And that horn section, is-no-joke. And, if you'd like to do more from Michelle' you should react to her bop "Nicety".
Yes, that was Dr. Dre and Easy E. Her first label was Easy's label Ruthless Records. Dr. Dre is her original producer, and he is one of her children's father along with Suge Knight. She sounds broken because she says that every man that she was ever with stayed beating on her and she accepted it as normal because that's what she grew up seeing all the men around her doing. It's heartbreaking, but some beautiful, emotion filled music came out of all that pain. React to World Class Wreckin' Cru "Turn Off The Lights" (Dr. Dre was in the group) if you want to hear Michel'le's very first recorded vocals.
Dre beat the hell outta her during the recording of the song and she said they used a lot of makeup to cover up her black eye and bruises during the video shoot. 😪
