    My dear. Besides an exquisit seamstress, you also have produced a beautiful film. It has all been so tastefully done that it was a treat to watch. You must be the most precise person in history bound sewing. Don't you drive yourself to madness sometimes? But it is all worthwhile when we look at the result. I love watching your progress and cannot wait for the next episode. Thanks for taking us along.

    I personally enjoyed the first way of pronouncing chemise because I often make mistakes too 💖😅 English is weird, it’s not read as it’s written and basically you need to hear other people pronounce it repeatedly until you’re able to get it right 😂 I was born and raised in Australia but my parents speak Spanish where the rules are a lot more simpler.
    There’s a roundabout here in Victoria where Lilydale is spelt three different ways for the same suburb!
    When the Myki (public transport card pass) I read it as Mi-ki but it’s actually “my-key” which was rudely brought to my attention. 😅
    Sydenham, which you would assume is said Syd-en-ham, is actually a quick blur of Sid-di-am. 😂
    Like before, I loved the work you did, beautiful and so much attention to detail which shows the love you put into it. 💖💖💖

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah yes! I almost didn't want to remove the old one for this reason...because I AM definitely human and we all make mistakes! :)
      But at the same time, I think this was the right decision! English is definitely a hard language...I don't get all the rules half the time so I can't imagine what it would be like to learn it!

    • @fischersgirl1720

    • @chickenleg002
      @chickenleg002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I seem to peppering things with quotes here but there is another old one, & I cannot recall the attribution, that goes “English doesn’t borrow from other languages. It follows them down dark alleys, knocks them out, and goes through their pockets for loose grammar.” And we do tend to borrow the oddest bits & fragments from other languages. It is almost like we seek out the weirdest turns of phrase possible for things.

      Bella Maes Designs ; That’s great and right thing you did. There ARE many non-native English speaker, having to rely on auto-translations.
      Personally...I am fortunate that I can speak/listen English and French as a Japanese, beside some Koreans and Chinese: BUT when I remember what I had to go through...teachers yelling “articulate” to our face and the labor we had to pay learning to speak with strong accents (which should be vulgar in my native tongue)... pronouncing “R”. Pretty tough efforts and teachers are always a bit ruder and condescending than Prof.Higgins, to non-Westerners😒.
      I think those who were born to speak English should do some effort to do it properly...!

    Lol simple but not is basically the definition of elegance. You have these gorgeous silhouettes that look so refined and simple and then you get close enough to see the construction in detail and your mind is blown by all the fiddly work that went into making it look so stream lined.

    I didn't think you needed to re-do this video! I figured you had a semi-regional accent (like me) that only shows up in a few words - and boy does my hubby tease me about those words lol. I'm rewatching and reliking to support you! I found the idea that Christine was supposed to be 16 rather odd too... the movie actress is certainly older than 16! But back then, it was also somewhat normal for a younger female to marry a much older man (as a nurse? financial support?). Keep up the great work Bella Mae!

      @BellaMaesDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's actually interesting that Emmy Rossum was born in '86, so she actually would have been around 17-18 when the movie was filmed!
      That's actually a good point about marrying older men! Thanks for sharing!

    My mother worked for Phelps fabric in Jacksonville Florida in the 70’s , She put on fashion shows in the community by teaching people sewing through FCCJ she helped make hockey uniforms but when I search further through felt she made some of the most awesome wedding dresses for people that were so expensive you wouldn’t believe it ! I didn’t ! The fabric alone was so expensive and I notions !

    Someone has probably already said it, or you may have since found out, but that pretty "insertion lace" that looks like a tiny little railroad track also goes by the name of "entredeux" - which means "between two". It was commonly used to join fabric to lace, lace to lace, flat fabric to ruffled fabric etc, etc. I love the stuff! If you look into various books and yt videos on "heirloom sewing" and "french handsewing" etc you'll see lots of examples of how it gets used. For people doing more modern sewing a lot of modern machines have a stitch (in the "hemstitching family" of stitches on the machine) that resembles it farily well - and there are some tricks to getting it to resemble it even better. For people who like the look, but not the price of it, can be a useful alternative. Those stitches can be very effective if done using a wing needle.

    Oh Bella Mae all that work re-recording, editing, and uploading! Still now I have the perfect excuse to watch you making them all over again 😃. Seriously though as someone who is hard of hearing, and dyslexic I feel your decision. My biggest problem when recording audio for workshops is that I can't really hear myself and if I'm tired my Mum says I sound like a teddy bear 😃 (whatever that sounds like) still I think my students have got used it. What I'm trying to say is, I come to your channel to watch your skill, passion, gorgous sewingy stuff, and can I just mention your beautiful filming of everything, not how you say chemise 😃.

      Precisely! Such a talented, intricate eye & hand - Deserves to spend her days dreaming of delicately intricate inlays, whimsical bonnets, laces & bows, embroidery trims & lovely ways to put all of them together as If done by Cinderellas Fairy Godmother.... Not by a single word - or phrase.. How is it this world can crush beauty without much of an effort But being encouraging, thoughtful & kind is out of the question many times.. Bella Mae - Even had the sound of an old music box's tune gently tinkling its way through the theme of show... How wonderfully charming it was All put together, one could imagine the glorious scent or roses & the gently flickering candlelight from candelabra across the room... Bella Mae Is a treasure..

    Thank you for redoing the audio on this. I enjoy your videos and the work that you do, but to be honest, as a French and even English speaker, the way you were saying chemise was driving me nuts and took away from the video, if only because you said it (incorrectly) so often. Kudos for being a professional and putting in the work to put out a professional and perfectly polished video that highlights the gorgeous finished garment.

    The movie isn't my fave, but the costumes are gorgeous in it for sure! I support making the Think of Me dress, too. It is stunning as well.
    And I didn't see the mispronounced version, but I fully understand. I mispronounced corridor, billiards, and of course Hermione for a while on each word because I hadn't heard them pronounced when I first came across the words. (And I'm sure way, way more that I can't remember right now.) It happens!

    How can the musical version of Phantom of the Opera be set in 1880 or 1881? When Christine and Carlotta are not dressed in costumes for the specific operas they are wearing very decorated 1870s bustle gowns, not the early 1880s natural form era silhouette. Perhaps it was supposed to be set in the 1880s because that’s when the book was, but the costume designer LOVED those sleeve flounces that Christine wears in most of her dresses, which are very 1870s.

    OMG!! What a beautiful garment to just be hidden under a ton of other clothes! you did a fantastic job! i've already watced the dress making portions and wanted to start from the beginning to see why you were making this costume. as this is not a customer order, what do you do with a set like this after completion? does it just go in your finished projects closet? seems like a waist for what i am sure was considerable cost to make. i'm glad i recently found your channel. i'm enjoying watching you do your own designs/draping, etc.

    • @BellaMaesDesigns
      @BellaMaesDesigns  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aw, thanks! The finished gown will go in a closet until the perfect time to wear it again (since it's historically accurate, I'd love to wear it to a ball!) But that's the very reason I don't have a lot of costumes in my closet...just don't have many places to wear them! But sometimes I'm just too in love with a costume to sell it!

    On one hand, I really appreciate that you put in all of the extra work to fix the pronunciation, because it was distracting me from your amazing sewing skills, on the other hand, I feel like kind of a jerk to harp on something as inconsequential as a mispronounced word. Sorry if I came across as rude in the previous version of the video.

      Truly took no offense to your comment (or any others like it!) ❤️ Finding out that you pronounced something wrong your whole life it a bit crushing...but at the same time, its also the time you get to learn something new and start saying it correctly! In the future, perhaps you could use a Frixion marker or pen in lieu of the washi tape? It disappears when heat is applied. I often use my hair dryer to get rid of all my marks when my iron would be too clunky.

    Oh, Bella, you didn't need to redo that video! I thought it was really sweet, and it made you look more human, because you are like the inaccessible perfection (who makes wonderful dresses since she is 13, who ans ers all comments and questions very quickly (I can't thank you enough for all your answers to my billion of questions about your 1860s evening gown), who is so sweet and generous...) It is totally normal to say something in the wrong way, mostly if you are dyslexic, you are not supposed to know everything on everything. People can be a little rude, but I'm sûre they didn't meant it, I'm sure they just wanted to warn you for another video. This chemise is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.

      Ah, thank you! Yes, that’s one of the reason I didn’t want to redo it...I’m definitely human! But at the same time, I would hate to have other people pick up the mispronunciation as a result of watching!

    Thank you so much for re-editing, I couldn't watch the original because for some reason I'm really sensitive to incorrect pronunciation. I'm overly sensitive in general, wish I wasn't but oh well.
    Your work is so beautiful and it looks like that was a lot of tedious hand sewing, I'm in awe! Everything you make is wonderful and it's a joy to watch you and listen to your pleasant voice. Thank you for sharing and I will definitely watch the rest of this series as well as any video you produce. 💜
