"I was spitting out formulas when you were spitting up formula." "I was actually breastfed as a baby." "Oh why don't you rub that in my orphan face." Fave line.
MrScruff-NinjaTuna ditto, loved that line. I also liked where Dr. Robotnik at the beginning would say that “Donut Lord” would be someone who never existed, but then in the end, Dr. Robotnik technically never existed. (Accidentally misspelled Dr. Robotnik’s name like a noob, sorry)
My favorite was the one from Robotnik about his robots coming out of his egg sack. Like... lmao. The joke totally flew over the heads of all the kids in the theater.
Jim Carrey's role as Robotnik was perfect. That's exactly how he acts, Robotnik is a cartoon villian, and nobody can be a cartoon human better than Jim Carrey.
Carey's version to me resembles a combination of Sonic X and the weekly cartoon show that had a PSA message at the end version of Robotnik and Eggman. I wonder if we will get two comedy relief robot henchmen in the sequel?
That's a little different though because they inhabit the same world. Thats part of why Detective Pikachu isn't classed as this trope. The pokemon are integrated into the world with the humans. The Toons and Pokemon aren't the oddity in their respective worlds.
@@AverageEggmonEnthusiast Neither is Sonic in the movie though, he's from the same universe, just not on the same side of it. This also isn't the same as "fiction character X comes to our world" because that means they're literally coming to our world and either don't have to play by our world's laws or lose their powers and abilities because they do have to play by those laws. This isn't the case with Sonic cause the rules are the same no matter where he goes as it's all in the same universe.
I think it's also due to some Hollywood trend thinking that grounding a movie in the real world will widen the appeal somehow. Notice how many movies needlessly either go with "Characters get warped to modern earth" or "Modern earth person gets warped to character's world" and "has to find way home while dealing with shenanigans" as the main plot points. They end up so paranoid that just having fans of a game go to a movie will bomb that instead they water it down and hit as many checkboxes as they can to cast a wide net of mediocrity.
@@BlackLivesMatter23 That sort of make sense though with Transformers, especially as a lot of the shows that the franchise has churned out over the decades alone have always seen shapeshifting robots befriending humans (and otherwise).
I didn’t really view the plot as “I’m lost in the human world, what do I do?” I more-so saw it as “I had to come to the human world as a child and stay hidden from everyone, I’m super lonely.”
The plot to the Sonic X anime is about him getting trapped in the human world and befriending a young boy, so I dunno if it was a coincidence but either way it really worked out
That's how he ends up on earth most of the time right? I think he has always been from Mobios(spelling?) And just gets stuck either from Dr. Robotnik or some other force.
"detective pikachu is technically a videogame movie" me: Pull out copy of the ACTUAL detective pikachu game that existed years before the movie. YES THERE WAS A DETECTIVE PIKACHU GAME.
This movie is just like 90's energy incarnate: - There's Jim Carrey - It's a buddy road-trip movie - It's a found-family movie - It's a stereotypical good-guy vs evil scientist story - It's technically a buddy-cop movie - Government is after top-secret alien - Sonic himself just radiates 90's kid energy; his cave is the best example cause it tells us so much about him without even telling us anything about it. There's nunchuks, there's a boombox with a variety of cassette tapes, a beanbag chair, a pile of comic books, a ping-pong table, there's fairy-lights strewn about the place, it just looks like a kids clubhouse full of hand-me-down stuff. - Sonic is a kid and he acts like one; I know a lot of people didn't like it when he flossed (nobody had a problem with Marvel when they partnered with EpicGames and shoved Thor playing Fortnite in Endgame), but he's a kid, he probably saw other kids do it and thinks it's cool too so he does it. On top of that, he's quippy and sarcastic, he's always got some smart-allec remark, and he does stuff without thinking it through - There's blatant, almost self-aware product placement; Wayne's World is probably the best example of blatant, self-aware 90's product placement. - It's a wild and wacky plot as a whole. - A parent character dies early on (spoilers I guess?).
People didn’t care when Thor played fortnite? 1. It was a dead game back then, but it’s even deader now. And 2. People also didn’t like it then either.
I found sonic adorable whenever he got excited he'd bolt around like an kid on a sugar rush. people say the movie took from fox's quicksilver but i also saw a bit of DC'S flash in him. not the literal comics, i mean the scene in justice league where he explores the batcave. when watching the opening i kind of wished we got to explore a bit more as to who the hell that guardian owl was and what was their relationship like (maybe in the sequel). speaking of which, I just hope they don't bring in chaos emeralds or shadow TOO soon before they even get to knuckles. not that i dislike shadow but it would feel forced. it would be like introducing vegeta before piccolo in retelling dragonball. you can't do that.
Mr. Random Man so they want to make a sequel? I genuinely liked this take on Sonic on how he coped with loneliness and and he knew that he couldn’t communicate with anyone so he decided to observe them from afar. This take on him is a pretty great version and Ben really has a childish feeling to his voice due to him playing as two young characters in other shows that I know of I know some other small roles he’s had. I have one last thing to add but it involves the opening so {SPOILERS} The beginning was pretty great but why did the echidna tribe need Sonic? I can tell obviously that they were echidnas due to their familiar long spines (I believe right). So why did they need his power exactly?
Asking if Jim Carrey was playing Carrey or Dr. Robotnik is like asking, “Is Ryan Reynolds playing Ryan Reynolds or Deadpool?” The answer is both. He’s just the perfect guy to play him
Even if they're human characters thrust in the real world, I wonder how Saber thinks of the Fat Albert movie? There were bits and pieces I liked to accommodate for that fact. Albert and his buddies becoming more and more normal in the real world; the fact they had real actors portray the cast in the real world; Albert meeting Bill Cosby and learning of him and his pals' inspirations as characters; the fact there were real stakes for Albert not being in his cartoon universe.
Roger Rabit is more of its own thing, with like maybe Cool World also being there, since it's a world where toons and humans constantly coexist rather than one being taken to the others world
Wow! I haven't thought about Roger Rabbit since forever. Now that I think about it they basically invented this trope. But again, just like the dude 2 comments before said, cartoons already existed in the human world so it isn't exactly the same. I wonder how made it evolve (or rather devolve) into the Smurfs/Alvin and the Chipmunks/Woody Woodpecker movie.
The “creature comes to human world and befriends humans” is so appealing to kids because they then think it’s possible to meet their favorite characters irl.
Yeah, and as a person that once was a kid, it just felt so surreal that, hey! Your favorite character is here on Earth! Maybe you'll get a chance to meet them! It's like some crossover episode and will definitely make you feel excited knowing they're there :))
"Because Sonic can't go to San Francisco himself?" Well...his whole life he's lived in Green Hills. He's got no clue where San Fran is. Tom told him to go "West" despite the fact that their town is somewhere in Washington or Oregon. I'm sure Sonic doesn't have a map or knows where to point out Green Hills on a map. Sure, he'll eventually figure it out but not before Robotnik finds him and such. But still.
It can't be too hard to find that city. Just keeping running into every city you can find until you've found one where the streets are covered in poop, needles, and trash bags. Once you've found that, you're in the right place.
@Coco- Nutz even my 4 year old cousin who was with me said "mommy can I go to the bathroom" when he flossed, he's a good kiddo. And nice to be around with
I mean assuming he ages the same way as humans he probably like what 15-16ish? given how old he is in the prologue and the movie happening 10 years later, like Sonic is legit Fortnight age lol. It's cringey but it's Cringe that actually fits
His "quils" have always been "styled" his spikes are hair in every version of sonic Amy styles her quils as well if you play sonic adventure sonic washes his quils like he's washing his hair
I actually noticed that if you look closely at the scene where he becomes fluffy, you can still see the quills intact. Its only the hair that gets fluffed up
I have a feeling the reason why the product placement in the movie was so on the nose is out of a kind of rebellious form of malicious compliance. "We have to talk about Zillow and Olive Garden. Let's do it in a way that makes them looks ridiculous."
@@OtakuUnitedStudio Right? It didn't even feel like advertising to me, just felt like more pop culture references. Also, the Sonic franchise is no stranger to oddly placed advertising *coughSOAPcough* so I felt like the corniness oddly fitted right in, in a way.
This movie was pretty good, but I can say with confidence that this movie ACTUALLY has potential to be a good series of films: If they play the cards right with the characters and a serious, but still family-friendly plot, this can be an excellent thing in the Sonic Franchise.
It seems that the makers of this movie truly had a passion for it, as evident with the new character designs and the way Sonic as a character was handled in the movie. As long as they keep up that passion and continue listening to feedback, I have some confidence that no matter what higher-ups they're stuck with, they'll give it their best.
The Sonic movie in a sentence: simple yet fun. To further explain: Sonic's personality and the character chemistry between him, Marsden, and Eggman helps this movie shine-just like in the games. The reason he has such a lasting legacy is BECAUSE of his iconic personality. Here it's much more kid like, but the tone works. He's cocky, but not arrogant. I like that. And this isn't the first time Sonic has come to Earth-it's never clear in Modern Sonic games if he's on Earth or not, such as with Sonic Unleashed, and Sonic X he's also on Earth for the first two seasons. Somehow, it works.
As someone who's been a Sonic fan since I was 12, here's some interesting parallels in the movie that I wanted to point out (SPOILER WARNING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANNA WATCH THE MOVIE): -Robotnik randomly says a Japanese line in one part of the film while reacting to Sonic's quill. This could very much be a neat reference to Sonic X, the first Sonic anime, along with Eggman from Sonic Adventure 2 who also spoke random Japanese lines like "Yosh" -In the beginning of the movie we see that Sonic in this incarnation of him was raised by a owl creature, forgot her name, but that has never been a thing in any other version of Sonic and it's both strange and creative at the same time. Usually Sonic is depicted as a orphan (as his creator intended) who just lived all on his own his whole life, and is basically a nomad. Here he has someone he cares about as a family, which is interesting to see. Yes in the Archie comics he had parents, along with a mom in Sonic Underground, but Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Uekawa has said that Sonic is meant to be a orphan with no parents at all -There was echidnas who appeared in the beginning, and I recognized them as Knuckle's family tribe! There are the people who protected the Master Emerald before Knuckles, and they died in video game canon while Knuckles was a kid. Since Knuckles is a bit older then Sonic, 16, I'd imagine they must have died during the fight with the owl or they died shortly after but that's just a personal theory of mine -Sonic also got to live in Tom's basement at the end of the movie, which I think is a neat parallel to Sonic X as well, where Sonic and his friends all hid in the basement back at season one of the series whenever they needed to hide from people, so they technically lived there -We had never really seen how Robotnik was like before he became ape shit while trying to get Sonic, but I do know that there was a descend in his sanity levels. This was mainly exploded in a good bit of the comics that I read as far as I know, but Robotnik never really had a good grasp on his sanity in the first place. So it's hard to say if it was really Eggman or not that we saw slowly descend into madness throughout the movie, or Jim Carry just being Jim Carry, but either way it was interesting to see -The rings I believe did indeed have powers to open portals to other worlds, that's just common lore, but they never really had a creator or something beforehand, which is why I think the owl is a good character to have that could answer some pretty nifty questions about how the movie writers think the rings were made -Sonic in pretty much all incarnations of him is usually seen as someone who's constantly optimistic, impatient but he doesn't really have a temper and he doesn't quite get angry, a natural born leader, constantly witty and cracking up jokes and sarcasm, and doesn't quite show his age as being canonically 15, expect when he's running on his pure impulses or avoiding Amy. Here, we can actually SEE how he's still just a kid. He's still growing, and it shows. He isn't a leader yet, he isn't someone who can handle his powers yet, and he isn't someone who can naturally roll with the punches yet either. This makes me wonder if there is a sequel, how they could possibly get Sonic to grow. I find it intriguing that here they made Sonic's powers tied to his emotions because that was never a thing before, which was why I was surprised whenever he got angry or upset, because that's not the Sonic I know. However it wasn't until the end, when we saw Sonic start calling Robitnik Eggman, when it really clicked for me that this is supposed to be a Sonic that's still growing, and maybe what he really needs now is actually his other friends in the series to get him to become the Sonic we see in the movies, which I'm excited to see if they do try to do that. -Finally, I shall end this with a out of context quote from Eggman in the movie. -"LOOK WHAT CAME OUT OF MY SACK" -Robotnik
According to his owl mom, if he got caught by the humans, his only option would be to teleport to this absurd mushroom universe hellhole. -Was there no other option? -How did she know about Earth in the first place? -Was it intentional?
@@SonicLegends And that's where Knuckles was introduced in the games. And Robotnik is there - and in the games, he turned Knuckles against Sonic and Tails. I think that was them setting up the sequel in more than just a post-credits scene.
That part when the military came over to give the policeman a gift card was a missed opportunity! It should have been that Sonic restaurant gift card, not Olive Garden!
Olive Garden didn't sponsor the movie. It was a joke among the writers because Olive Garden had a slogan, "You're Family Here" The restaurant Sonic actually hates Sonic the Hedgehog
I went into the theater expecting to see a meme of a movie I might get a couple chuckles out of. I left the theater kind of excited for the very obvious second sonic movie that’s definitely going to be made
I love how they made sonic jump on top of robotniks ship at the end to defeat him. Little detail but it was really cool to see that they referenced the game mechanics
ABSIN also in the credits they referenced the entire movie, including that part, but in the credits they showed the electro ball hanging from the bottom of Eggy’s ship. Nice ref to the games.
What attracted Jim Carrey to this project more than anything else was that his daughter was a big fan of the Sonic the Hedgehog games growing up. The "Mushroom Planet" directly evokes Mushroom Hill Zone from the first level of Sonic & Knuckles (1994). In that zone the various mushrooms could be used as springs and platforms for Sonic to jump on. There is a Chaos Emerald drawn on Sonic's map. Many Sonic games revolve around Sonic's efforts to collect the seven Chaos Emeralds. When Sonic starts rolling along the ground, two sounds from the games play simultaneously: the iconic "Spin Attack" sound, and the "Dash Pad" sound. The ring sound effect from the games is heard when Sonic catches a ring with his quill in midair. Tom (and Sonic) live in Green Hills, Montana. While this is not a real place, there is a luxury property in Montana called Green Hills Ranch. The Flash is seen to be Sonic's favorite superhero. Both are speedster heroes, obviously. Sonic's bare feet are never shown. Tails is voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessey, who has voiced the character since 2014. Just like he did in the games, Miles "Tails" Prower shows up in time for the sequel, in a post-credits sequence.
See, I thought the whole Sonic interacting with real humans was a nod to the Sonic Adventure games, and the Sonic X anime. Oh! And apparently the rings being portals to another universe was a reference to the Sonic The Movie OVA, according to my brother. Edit: I feel like he doesn’t know that much about the Sonic franchise… I saw this and saw more elements of Sonic than he talked about.
I've seen the OVA many times and I don't think the rings had anything to do with making the portals? At least that was never stated or pointed out? Maybe I need to read the comics or ask my comics friend?
Theres most likely a sequel coming The fact that robotnic says he'll be back by Christmas and tails shows up looking for sonic, theres most likely a sequel gonna come
My dad had that movie. He took it with him when he walked out on my family, but didn’t take pictures of me and my siblings. Oh and the movie’s pretty bad too.
"We have Detective Pikachu, which is technically a video game movie." What do you mean 'technically'? Detective Pikachu is based on the Detective Pikachu game for 3DS. From what I can tell it follows the concept of the game as well as any other video game movie, so ...
What about Wreck-It Ralph 1 I felt that was great. Now I don’t know if it falls into the video game aspect. But it should be a great candidate against sonic. I mean sonic wasn’t that good. It was OK
There's also the Tomb Raider movies and of course the Final Fantasy movies, oh and Angry Birds. I feel there's others not mentioned here or in Delta 23's comment though.
I don't think they were bad, they just went pretty far off the rails as they went on. The Mario Movie is interesting, in a Total Recall kind of way. But I think one of the best is the first Silent Hill movie.
Remember at the end when Robotnik says "I'll be back by Christmas!"? Imagine if the sequel is released around Christmas and Robotnik says to the audience, "Told you I'd be back by Christmas."🤣
Probably will but Christmas a few years from now. If you look closely at that final scene, Robotnik's device says hes been on the Mushroom planet for about 600 odd days, so we might get the movie about 2-3 years from now on Christmas.
Retinazer first off this person was clearly joking so no need to become a snowflake, second this is a SONIC movie, last time I checked he doesn’t exist? so I doubt this joke should be taken seriously. I bet you’re those types who call out a puppy video about it being improperly bred when there’s nothing wrong with it-
This movie reminded me of why I loved Sonic as a kid. I was an angsty adolescent, and Sonic made me believe I could do anything. It also made me curious and fearful of technology. I was also a foster kid, so that ending reminded me of that last home I had, where I was truly wanted, and how it changed my life. I was in much tears at the end of this movie, and I still believe I can do anything.
I’m scared my friend just look at me and said “Now that Sonic is confirmed as an extraterrestrial we have have ET and Sonic the Hedgehog fanfiction crossovers” I have never felt fear like this before
@@thetrashman7682 I always have issues with the 'Friendship power up' as it's a cheap thing to do (especially they way it was done in Fairy Tail). And I thought that moment in Sonic was also a bit cheesy. But that's my only problem with that scene.
Really enjoyed your review, fair critique I do agree with some of the points your made about Jim Carey but Dr Robotnik is pretty eccentric in media particularly the old cartoons of Sonic and he captures the Americanised version of Robotnik/Eggman very well.
That seems like the logical progression, ESPECIALLY if Sonic is playing with one of the rings and thinks of Long Claw. Knuckles is the LAST Echidna, and Long Claw just got her wing fucked up (instead of the "deadly arrow" thing we assumed). They're going at it, and of course sparks the rivalry between Sonic and Knuckles.
I think the next movie will be based off of Sonic 2 and will focus on Sonic still feeling a bit lonely because he, Tom and his wife start watching a lot of movies that have something to do with brothers, which makes Sonic wonder what it's like to have a brother, big or little. Then comes Tails, as seen from the after credits, searching for Sonic so he can bring him back to his old home. The entire movie would revolve around Sonic becoming friends with Tails and proving that Sonic's happy at Green Hills and doesn't need to go back. But not only that, it would be about Sonic being in Tom's shoes as Tails interacts with the world in a more indiscrete and curiously stupid sort of way than Sonic did. Such scenes can have Tails dismantling every bit of technology in sight to figure out how they work, getting glued to the TV, discovering sugar for the first time and going on a rush, mistaking toothpaste for an actual sauce and hurling his guts out afterwards, giving Crazy Carl a therapy exam and Tails ends up starting to lose his own mind trying to understand Carl's madness (Green Hills now know who Sonic is and keeps him a town secret,) and can even try to communicate with Tom's dog. Meanwhile, Robotnik finally gets out of the mushroom world and begins making a way to get back at Sonic.

I want to guess something about the sequel will be released around then - a trailer, a tie-in short, or some other big announcement. Also: Rock-onnaissance! Ha!
Anyone else gonna talk about the interracial coupling? It didn't even make sense in Sonic, she was the only Black person in that "small Montana town." Why is Hollywood forcing that down our throats?
@@edwardgaines6561 She wasn't the only black person in Green Hills, but the few others were all background characters. And frankly, they had more chemistry than most couples in romance movies do. Being IN an interracial couple, it's the first time in a very long time my wife and I didn't feel like it was forced.
@@OtakuUnitedStudio Yes, but *WHY* is it usually being forced though? It's not race per se, but culture that's hard to reconcile. For example, would an Amish person marry a Hindu? Nope.
@@edwardgaines6561 It's not being "forced." Much like _in my own case,_ people of different races marry each other. What cultural differences are there going to be between two people who live in the Pacific Northwest just because their skin color is different? That they are both upper middle class is a good indicator that they really don't have that different of lifestyles and probably didn't before they met. And your example is terrible. An Amish person wouldn't marry a Hindi because the Amish are only allowed to marry other Amish for _religious_ reasons. A Hindi person isn't very likely to be living within an Amish community either, so it's incredibly unlikely people of those two groups would meet in the first place. So, I really think the issue is your presuppositions than the movie's portrayal.
My baby cousin, she’s an infant, is obsessed with movies with cg characters and humans together. Specifically Peter Rabbit, Christopher Robin, and Paddington
I remembered calling him Dr. Eggman on the games as a kid and was so confused when I get to watch the cartoon version re-run here in our country (at teen age) and be called "Dr. Robotnik" like.. no.. that wasn't supposed to be his name! And then I got to know that he actually has TWO names. But I still definitely prefer to call him Dr. Eggman just for nostalgia's sake.
He was not alone in that; several others including myself in our theater shot out of our seats hollering the same thing xD I was there with my young child too and he tattled on me to his dad when we got back home from the theater lol
I was doing my research before they showed the redesign. Tails wasn't going to be in the first take of the movie, and was introduced when Paramount made the redesign
Saberspark, i'm gonna have to disagree with you on the whole "Video game movies are usually bad because it's hard to make a movie out of an interactive medium." The problem is the writing; most video game movies (As well as live action adaptations of animated series) seem to have a problem with the source material in general. Some movie directors for these movies either didn't bother to research or don't have the rights to the source material and end up changing around things that don't need to be changed usually resulting in a product completely different from what the original demographic were hoping for. They also usually fail to bring in newcomers because the general quality of the writing is usually either lazy or just plain bad. Most movies continue to repeat cliche's that most people generally don't care for, expect the viewing audience to have some sort of previous knowledge of the source material, or do weird/random things with little to no explanation that not even fans of said source material understand.
Exactly I'm a believer that the characters and where they came from dont make it good or bad it's the writing. Sonic and mario can become awesome movies the lore is there it just needs to be cooked right.
I personally think the reason why most video game movies suck(ed) is because of severe time/budget constraints and a disjoint from the mindset of the people making the movie and the people who made the game. I’ve worked in the gaming industry myself and have seen this happen up close. A game is popular, peaks the interest of big shot media holders that want a piece of the good ol’ money pie. So something needs to be pushed out before the kids forget about the game and move on, usually within a year. But since so many of these movies flop, it’s a high risk and investors are reluctant to put down big money which is hardly needed if you want to make a decent fully animated film WITHIN A YEAR! So you see, animation studios need to work with these crazy conditions and it’s just a recipe for disaster. Things are quite different if a studios is working on older IP like Sonic, capitalizing on nostalgia with the old crowd and new comers so they can take their time to do it properly. Heck, they redid the main character completely after the badly received trailer... this would’ve been utterly impossible if it was an ordinary “get it out before next Christmas” movie. So I think the time is right for doing these animated game movies now since the technology caught up to make it not as crazy expensive to make one and studios can work with more reasonable time constraints when working on titles that do not only ride the very fleeting hype train. Hoping on a lot of great content to come!
Exactly I think the same. Idk why they just ignore the material at times or put some modern things in it like jokes of the time or references and stuff. Just make the movie in their world.
I was going to say the reason why the resident evil movies suck because I have nothing in common with the source material which is kind of ridiculous to say because the resident evil movies are closer to the video games then sonic was and it was good So I think it’s more important to understand the characters and get the characters right in the resident evil movies had Alice as a base for telling the story when they should’ve used the most understood most iconic character Albert Wesker for the resident evil movies Whenever anybody says Albert Wesker you immediately think resident evil Alice doesn’t have the same weight I still hope they make resident evil six with Alice though before they restart it but if they restart it and make it faithful to the original source material I think the fans get behind it
Audiences love seeing movies, especially new ones they haven't seen, but when others are talking or on their phone its rude to others who want to watch the movie and that's "No good". So the next time you go see a movie, silence your phones and quite down and enjoy the movie -Sonic Says
Nostalgia Critic gave the best review. The movie was an honest adaptation of the source. I loved all the Dad jokes and fourth wall breaks of the original cartoon. The movie did that Lol for Saberspark's recent trend, it's got a very fiurry moment between Rocky and the female human lead
Last time I remember that Robotnik was portrayed has a goofy character and a serious character in different things; like in SatAM Sonic cartoon show, Robotnik was a serious character who hated humans and prefer everything about robots; while in other shows and games they made him as a goofy bad guy. So I'm guessing Jim Carrey was trying to pull both traits and also guessing that this new movie is portraying as somewhat of an origin story of how Sonic and Robotnik met and why he hates Sonic so much because of him ruining Robotnik's plans on world domination (and him slowly became obsessed with Sonic throughout the movie as well).
Because spoilers for people that haven't seen it, duh. It's only been 5 days, give it three months and we'll be fine unless people want to wait to get the DVD.
I don't know about you, but my favorite scene was when they were waiting for the elevator to the rooftop and those rando people behind them were freaking out because they thought sonic was a poor kid stuck in a duffle bag by maniacs.. Might just be me though.
Hmmm, 12 minutes of Saber saying, "I don't know very much about Sonic." Or "I'm thinking too much about this." So Sonic Adventure 2 is basically in San Francisco. Sonic Team USA was based in San Francisco, so its a very fitting setting to at least go to. Green Hills, Green Hill zone... perfect, 10/10. Sonic Interacting with the real world is sort of a common-ish thing for him. Its a very strange "we just exist alongside people' most of the time for him. Different worlds isn't too much of a foreign concept. Also he didn't want to go to San Fran alone, he could of likely found it eventually, but he also didn't know where it was. Sonic Flossing is honestly... very relevant. He was designed to be edgy from the core... so its fitting. I'd recommend it for the sheer fact that they tried. They honestly tried, and I think a movie deserves that so they can see we appreciate effort put into our videogame movies. Though I'd more say the core demographic is kids and sonic fans, and I'm a pretty hardcore sonic fan. I regret not buying the Sonic Toaster, but I was broke at the time. :( To be fair, you have some points, but... not a complaint, just an observation. >:I
Ye, the movie didn't entirely isolate people not in the fandom though since I didn't know much of anything before watching the movie. Now I've done so much research cause I've gotten slightly into it XD
Thing is - Sonic has always been crossed over into the 'real world', especially in some of the older games and tv shows. Makes sense for the movie to go in this direction. Also. Hammy from Over the Hedge did it first!
@@kanniekosplayyes2799 It was a joke about a REALLY BADLY translated story about a man with a hook hand. Instead of saying "There was a hook hand on the car door," he said "Man hook hand car door." I actually thought this movie was pretty good, Really one of the better Video Game Film Adaptations. I'm so glad they listen to the criticisms of Sonic's initial design and fixed it.

I mean, the Zillow and Olive Garden product placement were pretty tongue in cheek, with Zillow returning an apartment that costs something like $4,300.00 per month (which is actually probably a good deal for that type of apartment in San Francisco), and the call back to the Olive Garden plug heavily implied that Olive Garden was very underwhelming in that situation. SPOILER Also, Sonic went on a road trip with Tom instead of just finding his own way in a few seconds because he wanted to finally have a friend for the first time in a decade and *really* didn't want to go to the mushroom world, which would be infinitely lonelier than Earth was to him.

Jim Carrey's role as Robotnik was perfect. That's exactly how he acts, Robotnik is a cartoon villian, and nobody can be a cartoon human better than Jim Carrey.
Love his take on the character said something along the lines of “He wants the innocence that sonic has, because it’s something he lost/never had”
Robotnik had many flavors, this kind is not the best.
Reminded me of how he did Count Olaf from the Series of Unfortunate Events movie. Love it.
Carey's version to me resembles a combination of Sonic X and the weekly cartoon show that had a PSA message at the end version of Robotnik and Eggman. I wonder if we will get two comedy relief robot henchmen in the sequel?
Dr Stone shoulda been Snidley.
Sabre: i don't like when people befriend cartoon characters.
Me: *laughs in Who Framed Roger Rabbit*
It's still my favorite movie of all time that one.
It's amazing how they could get it right back in the late 80's and then get it wrong so very many many times going forward.
Tessla Ok. I wasn’t arguing that. I haven’t even seen the movie yet. I was explaining how Roger Rabbit isn’t apart of that trope.
I don't think it's a demographic thing. I think it's because human actors are infinitely cheaper than full 2 hours of CGI.
Someone gets it!
Imagine a sonic movie in the sponge on the run style
Just ask Transformers movies.
I didn’t really view the plot as “I’m lost in the human world, what do I do?”
I more-so saw it as “I had to come to the human world as a child and stay hidden from everyone, I’m super lonely.”
And "I don't want to be alone and I want to be a part of the world and do what other kids do" AND "I need a family or someone who cares about me"
Call it “Sonic needs a hug” the movie

This movie is just like 90's energy incarnate:
- There's Jim Carrey
- It's a buddy road-trip movie
- It's a found-family movie
- It's a stereotypical good-guy vs evil scientist story
- It's technically a buddy-cop movie
- Government is after top-secret alien
- Sonic himself just radiates 90's kid energy; his cave is the best example cause it tells us so much about him without even telling us anything about it.
On top of that, he's quippy and sarcastic, he's always got some smart-allec remark, and he does stuff without thinking it through
- There's blatant, almost self-aware product placement; Wayne's World is probably the best example of blatant, self-aware 90's product placement.
- It's a wild and wacky plot as a whole.
- A parent character dies early on (spoilers I guess?).
Wow! Thanks honestly. This really helped me get a sense of the movie. You ever thought about doing movie reviews because that was really spot on!
Oh my god stop the car right now! The worlds largest rubber band ball!? We gotta go see it!
Mr. Random Man so they want to make a sequel? I genuinely liked this take on Sonic on how he coped with loneliness and and he knew that he couldn’t communicate with anyone so he decided to observe them from afar. This take on him is a pretty great version and Ben really has a childish feeling to his voice due to him playing as two young characters in other shows that I know of I know some other small roles he’s had. I have one last thing to add but it involves the opening so {SPOILERS}
The beginning was pretty great but why did the echidna tribe need Sonic? I can tell obviously that they were echidnas due to their familiar long spines (I believe right). So why did they need his power exactly?

"This is the best animated character & human go on adventure movie" - Saberspark
"Am I a joke to you?" - Roger Rabbit
Right? That's what I was wondering too. Who Framed Roger Rabbit was a beautiful composition of human and cartoon.
This movie was pretty good, but I can say with confidence that this movie ACTUALLY has potential to be a good series of films:
If they play the cards right with the characters and a serious, but still family-friendly plot, this can be an excellent thing in the Sonic Franchise.
It seems that the makers of this movie truly had a passion for it, as evident with the new character designs and the way Sonic as a character was handled in the movie.

As someone who's been a Sonic fan since I was 12, here's some interesting parallels in the movie that I wanted to point out (SPOILER WARNING FOR PEOPLE WHO WANNA WATCH THE MOVIE):
-Robotnik randomly says a Japanese line in one part of the film while reacting to Sonic's quill. This could very much be a neat reference to Sonic X, the first Sonic anime, along with Eggman from Sonic Adventure 2 who also spoke random Japanese lines like "Yosh"
-In the beginning of the movie we see that Sonic in this incarnation of him was raised by a owl creature, forgot her name, but that has never been a thing in any other version of Sonic and it's both strange and creative at the same time. Usually Sonic is depicted as a orphan (as his creator intended) who just lived all on his own his whole life, and is basically a nomad. Here he has someone he cares about as a family, which is interesting to see. Yes in the Archie comics he had parents, along with a mom in Sonic Underground, but Naoto Ohshima and Yuji Uekawa has said that Sonic is meant to be a orphan with no parents at all
-There was echidnas who appeared in the beginning, and I recognized them as Knuckle's family tribe! There are the people who protected the Master Emerald before Knuckles, and they died in video game canon while Knuckles was a kid. Since Knuckles is a bit older then Sonic, 16, I'd imagine they must have died during the fight with the owl or they died shortly after but that's just a personal theory of mine
-Sonic also got to live in Tom's basement at the end of the movie, which I think is a neat parallel to Sonic X as well, where Sonic and his friends all hid in the basement back at season one of the series whenever they needed to hide from people, so they technically lived there
-We had never really seen how Robotnik was like before he became ape shit while trying to get Sonic, but I do know that there was a descend in his sanity levels. This was mainly exploded in a good bit of the comics that I read as far as I know, but Robotnik never really had a good grasp on his sanity in the first place. So it's hard to say if it was really Eggman or not that we saw slowly descend into madness throughout the movie, or Jim Carry just being Jim Carry, but either way it was interesting to see
-The rings I believe did indeed have powers to open portals to other worlds, that's just common lore, but they never really had a creator or something beforehand, which is why I think the owl is a good character to have that could answer some pretty nifty questions about how the movie writers think the rings were made
-Sonic in pretty much all incarnations of him is usually seen as someone who's constantly optimistic, impatient but he doesn't really have a temper and he doesn't quite get angry, a natural born leader, constantly witty and cracking up jokes and sarcasm, and doesn't quite show his age as being canonically 15, expect when he's running on his pure impulses or avoiding Amy.

Hi 😃
Imagine they make a sequel focusing Tails then Sonic 3 and Knuckles. They showed Tails in the end credits of the this movie so why not?
That seems like the logical progression, ESPECIALLY if Sonic is playing with one of the rings and thinks of Long Claw. Knuckles is the LAST Echidna, and Long Claw just got her wing fucked up (instead of the "deadly arrow" thing we assumed). They're going at it, and of course sparks the rivalry between Sonic and Knuckles.

ElectroBlastLuigi well, the only way we could get knuckles in a third/fourth movie is if the second one introduces the chaos emeralds into the films.

Rock-onnaissance! Ha!
Anyone else gonna talk about the interracial coupling? It didn't even make sense in Sonic, she was the only Black person in that "small Montana town."
Why is Hollywood forcing that down our throats?

My bf and I right before seeing the movie: this is gonna be cringy af
After watching the movie: wow that wasn’t so bad
I was going to say the reason why the resident evil movies suck because I have nothing in common with the source material which is kind of ridiculous to say because the resident evil movies are closer to the video games then sonic was and it was good So I think it’s more important to understand the characters and get the characters right in the resident evil movies had Alice as a base for telling the story when they should’ve used the most understood most iconic character Albert Wesker for the resident evil movies Whenever anybody says Albert Wesker you immediately think resident evil Alice doesn’t have the same weight I still hope they make resident evil six with Alice though before they restart it but if they restart it and make it faithful to the original source material I think the fans get behind it
i actually loved the entire thing, except for a fart "joke"
Multiple you mean?
Audiences love seeing movies, especially new ones they haven't seen, but when others are talking or on their phone its rude to others who want to watch the movie and that's "No good". So the next time you go see a movie, silence your phones and quite down and enjoy the movie

So Sonic Adventure 2 is basically in San Francisco. Sonic Team USA was based in San Francisco, so its a very fitting setting to at least go to. Green Hills, Green Hill zone... perfect, 10/10.
