THEY SHOULD PUT HIS PICTURE IN THE HAUNTED MANSION DRESSED UP LIKE 17TH CENTURY STYLE...OR HAVE HIM AS A GHOST PLAYING AN ORGAN SOMEWHERE...HE DESERVES HIGH RECOGNITION FOR THIS VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THIS.
My family has had a tradition longer than I've lived to ride the Haunted Mansion the very first thing when they enter the park. It is a tradition I look forward to every year. The Haunted Mansion "tour" with our Ghost host is one of the only times I have ever felt joy in fear, which is an odd yet incredibly euphoric experience. Will always love Disneyland, and especially this music, thanks for sharing this, (in my humble opinion) far creepier version of the song. A Disneyphile never has too much Disney love, I always say. :)
Like many theatre organ things, you pretty much have to make the score up after listening to the original song. I believe that Gaylord Carters estate has a copy of a lead sheet or something of that nature (I have heard rumors) but I doubt they will part with it easily.
I love dancing around my room listening to this, pretending I'm one of the mansion's ballroom dancers from that one scene at the party. So much fun, but I actually scare MYSELF a bit when I do it at night! Haha!
I was a friend of Gaylord and it was always fun to hang out at his home in San Pedro that overlooked the Pacific ocean. I met him at a friend's Sunday afternoon party and Gaylord invited me visit him. When I visited I brought some Nino Rota sheet music and he played it for me on his home organ. He was a real musician and could sight read music which I never could as I played by ear.
Michael: I saw this years and years ago (maybe you can see comments I've made in the past) and it remains a staple for what great TH-cam videos should be. There's so much garbage on TH-cam but seeing an original, informative video that's interesting while still being so nostalgic really brightened my mood. I can remember it even now, several Halloweens later -- so kudos to you. I may subscribe just out of respect, for compliment's sake. Well done.
Thank you SO much for uploading this! The text was charming, helpful, and interesting. And of course, the music was wonderful. It has everything that makes the best TH-cam videos. Well done!
some songs i can like and gets hooked for about week.... i have heard this song at least once a day for like half a year, like different variations of it and it hasnt gotten boring. such an amazing piece of music.
the organ is a amazing model for the 192x with a amazing sounds quallity as heard here. and played by gaylord carter is impressive.the music sheets doesn't will look easy too..... well done disney and the uploader of this video!
Very good and thanks for posting. I went through this ride at Disneyland in the 70's. Still remember the organ music and the great effects. Now I know some of the history into its creation! Great video!!
That's such an interesting piece of music and Gaylord's interpetation of it is just perfect. It's both memorable and beautiful in it's own way. It's also quite a sophisticated piece on many different levels.
The way I found this awesome video was when I was looking for ghost stuff, and this popped up, sometimes random files can be good, but other times they are quite annoying.
Whhhyyy...does blood ooze from between the bricks...voices whisper from the basement...I feel a pulling sensation...the basement is calling...I hear this, this organ music...I feel dizziness...I need to sit down...the moldy basement smell...so alluring, the heat of the furnace...so warm...the sleep...need to sleep...feel so sleepy...the spiderwebs passing through my hair..tossing and turning on the straw floor...a pair of eyes in the corner in the dark...can't wake up...is this a dream...
When hinges creak in doorless chambers And strange and frightening sounds echo through the halls, whenever candle lights flicker where the air is deftly still, That is the time when ghosts are present practicing their terror with ghoulish delight.
First, how wonderful that your HEARD a rumor! It means people are talking about the organ and organ music, which is great. Yes, Imagineers wanted a punchier, wilder sound, so they brought in Sabransky to run it off the rails. Thanks for posting!
You could try using a recorder. You go to volume options, theres a thing that lets you choose where you are recording from. The default it the microphone, change it to the stereo/mono out, start recording, then play the video.
The organ in the ballroom scene at Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is the actual organ prop used in the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea movie, so it was designed from or inspired from the movie prop. Instead, it IS the actual movie prop itself.
The name of this song is simply known as the 'Haunted Mansion [Organ] Theme'. The accompanying vocal song is "Grim Grinning Ghosts", and bears slight resemblance to the 'Theme'.
Love to hear of the history of the music for the Haunted house as a child used to scare the hell out of me, yet even today this ride and the Pirates of the Caribian ride our my 2 favorite rides at Dianeyland.
I love this ride. When I was younger there was a part that scared me.... the floating candle stick that comes down the pitch black hallway towards you... lol
The automatic music matcher is not doing so well here. It matched the music I used to the wrong track. The music in my video are the preparatory versions of the tune and the very last one I used is the version that was incorporated into the ride but it's not the actual track used in the ride; there were "juiced up" bits added to make it "pop" to increase the experience of the riders. Also, what have "The Mellomen" and "Betty Taylor" got to do with any of this?
some states (USA) have disneylands but we have real places!! (europe) that grayeveard is any bigger city (1000+- peoples). we have legends about those hauses we have legends abou haunted places.. and they are everywhere you look you can hear a story about it
Yes, Stamm is very good! I have both of his Bach DVDs. The theatre organ you hear in the Haunted Mansion is a recording of a real pipe organ, and not an electronic. If you look closely in the video, you can see a photo of it when it was installed in the recording studio. Do you study yet? I started about your age!
That would be an opinion to answer, but organs can create many sounds and often have given eerie music to horror films. Yes, there are player organs, had them since the 1890s or so. They used paper rolls like a player piano. Many people had them in their homes too.
It's Grim Grinning Ghosts and would be in whichever collection of tunes from Disneyland you can find. Music stores have them, and they are for sale within the parks. Or, you can get it from Amazon: search for Souvenir Disney Songbook. Cheers! Michael
I'm not aware of anywhere that offers this as a download. You can buy the sheet music in a book of Disney songs, either at your local music store or online. Search for Grim Grinning Ghosts. Cheers! Michael
Yep, the tag spec was not intended for anything other than pop songs. The performer is given biggest notice at the expense of the composer or arranger. If you write your own songs, OK, but otherwise you might see Disneyland or something equally weird.
Yep, that's Gaylord. He was friends with many of the producers in Hollywood and was top of the list for this project, due mainly to his friend, Oliver Wallace, long-time arranger and organist for Walt Disney. en.wikipedia dot org/wiki/Gaylord_Carter You may think that it's not at all in his character, but remember that they brought in another organist to kick it up a couple notches.
@DouglasUrantia Great! I tried on two separate visits to California to meet him. The first time, he had a cold and wasn't leaving the house. The second time, a nurse said that he was very ill and couldn't see anyone. So, I enjoy hearing from people who have stories and photos. I've heard some good ones from Dick Simonton's son.
@elenalewis The answer must've scrolled off. This was a CD once offered with the various tracks used in the ride. There are other Haunted Mansion CDs available, as @RangRing68 suggests, but this one has been long out of print. It's Disney's Haunted Mansion. The Amazon listing is amazon.com/Disneys-Haunted-Mansion-Disney-Forever/dp/B000E25Y8C
No offense taken! Thank you for your interest. This is the real sound -- it's the tremulant and the stops used that make that sound. The organ can sound like a lot of different things and this is just one of them.
They should!

Indeed!
My equivalent of your tradition is for Pirates of the Caribbean! The haunted mansion is too iconic, just like pirates.
As a Disney cast member and fellow organist, I approve of this music!
Oh and getting to work on this ride in the 80's was a dream come true for me.
this is one of my favorite things to play on the theatre organ. i love the crescendo pedal! that always surprises people.
where did you find the score? I've been looking for it forever
Like many theatre organ things, you pretty much have to make the score up after listening to the original song. I believe that Gaylord Carters estate has a copy of a lead sheet or something of that nature (I have heard rumors) but I doubt they will part with it easily.

Aw I just love listening to this.
Makes me miss The Mansion.
Thanks for setting "Walt Disney" in the largest type!
Thank you for the info! The only time I was at Disneyworld on Halloween was 1979.
Gaylord Carter was one of my favorite Theatre Organists. I have always loved this song ,now that I know who it is playing it I love it even more!!!
Michael: I saw this years and years ago (maybe you can see comments I've made in the past) and it remains a staple for what great TH-cam videos should be. He gets right to the feel. No messing around. On the money.
I love the rich full sound of a pipe organ it can be sweet or it can be haunting !
I have been looking for this song for 10 years... Finally found it today...
Sounds Beautifull, almost got me a tear!
Nothing sounds as powerful as beautifully played organ music. Thanks for a great clip!
I love the depth of the organ and all the subtle sounds like the bells, etc...
the organ is a amazing model for the 192x with a amazing sounds quallity as heard here.
and played by gaylord carter is impressive.the music sheets doesn't will look easy too.....
well done disney and the uploader of this video!
Very good and thanks for posting. I went through this ride at Disneyland in the 70's. Still remember the organ music and the great effects. Now I know some of the history into its creation! Great video!!
Beautiful. The bells finish it.
That's such an interesting piece of music and Gaylord's interpetation of it is just perfect. It's both memorable and beautiful in it's own way. It's also quite a sophisticated piece on many different levels.
So THAT is what that midi was! It was driving me a little nuts for 6 years I couldn't figure out where it was from lol!
Thanks much!
The way I found this awesome video was when I was looking for ghost stuff, and this popped up, sometimes random files can be good, but other times they are quite annoying.
'The ghost and Mr. Chicken.' Verne Langdon's, 'Carnival of souls.' The wedding march music from the Haunted Mansion movie.
THIS GUYS A LEGEND
4:03 We are all grateful to all of them! :3
My Uncle wrote all the dialogue for the Haunted Mansion, for Disney :-D
Your uncle is X atencio
Your uncle is COOL!

This is my favourite ride at disney land!! absolutely amazing they make it so creepy and dark :D
I love the "Pepper's Ghost" effect!
First, how wonderful that your HEARD a rumor! It means people are talking about the organ and organ music, which is great. Yes, Imagineers wanted a punchier, wilder sound, so they brought in Sabransky to run it off the rails. Thanks for posting!
Excellent research and presentation. I would definitely grade this high in the world of You Tube!
All pipes! Robert Morton organs are highly regarded, along with Wurlitzer and Barton.
@michaelsmusicservice I spent two weeks at Gaylord's San Pedro home in 1988. I asked questions---many! He was a delightful host.
You could try using a recorder. You go to volume options, theres a thing that lets you choose where you are recording from.
The default it the microphone, change it to the stereo/mono out, start recording, then play the video.
very addictive music
Absolutely Beautimous!!!
dude, this is cool

What a cute collectible!
Gotta love the whole beginning, especially 0:58-1:03 !
I like the music and the ride. I like listening to organ music, I like the organ music at Dodger Stadium, classical organ and modern rock organ.
Thats just aweosme!! :D
i remember the online game based of of this. fun!
If you put a pipe organ in your haunted restaurant, I would travel across the country to visit it! This is a great idea!
Beautiful
Beautiful sound.... scary, fun
Whenever I ride this, it’s always by myself.
Same. It's a whole different vibe when you're by yourself.
I love this ride. When I was younger there was a part that scared me.... the floating candle stick that comes down the pitch black hallway towards you... lol

it's official I AM LEARNING HOW TO PLAY THE ORGAN, as soon as get an organ.
Cool! Thanks for posting.
Very nice vid! I learned a lot about something that I never gave much thought to. Isn't that funny how that works out sometimes?
I'm not aware of anywhere that offers this as a download. You can buy the sheet music in a book of Disney songs, either at your local music store or online. Search for Grim Grinning Ghosts.
Cheers! Michael
I love the organ to the music, the one that you hear starting at 0:31 :D. The ride is sickness too.
Grim Grinning Ghosts, by Buddy Baker. (It's in the video.) It is published in several Disney song books.
Cool clip thanks for sharing
Yep, the tag spec was not intended for anything other than pop songs. The performer is given biggest notice at the expense of the composer or arranger. If you write your own songs, OK, but otherwise you might see Disneyland or something equally weird.
Thank you!
so spooky i say wow wat a genius!
Thanks. I'll try to go somehow...and I won't give up till I do!

Brilliant clip !! That collectible must be pretty rare eh ??
very nicely done! Thank You!
i love this ride, yet to this day I'm still scared to look up in the elevator that brings you to the actual ride....and i'm 15.
I LOVE IT!
@DouglasUrantia Great! I tried on two separate visits to California to meet him. The first time, he had a cold and wasn't leaving the house. My friend about had a heart attack when we went on this ride last weekend! XD
