Was doing some reading on female science fiction authors the other day and Andre Norton came up. What would you say her best novel is that you've read? Another great review, cheers
Interesting that you mentioned David Brin comparing elements of this one to the Uplift books, and don't worry Hawaiian names and pronunciations confuse the hell out of me too 😉.
It is a very specific comparison; that of the human/dolphin connection through uplift. Maybe Anne McCaffrey would have been a better comparison. Can't remember if I mentioned Anne McCaffrey, dolphins of Pern ect.
@@OmnivorousReader possibly Brin came to mind over McCaffrey as it's not that long ago you read the 3rd book in the first Uplift Trilogy and it's more fresh in your mind. It will be interesting to find out what you think of his second Uplift trilogy if and when you get to them.
I find Andre Norton’s writing a bit dry. Just OK. An old-timey writer that I think holds up a lot better today is mah boi A E van Vogt. Also talking to animals is over rated, I can talk to my cat and all he wants is seconds, thirds and fourths on every meal.
Can't argue with you there, it is dry and it has dated. Technically, very good but it can be hard to connect to and there are quite a few authors of her same era that have much more... accessible? readable? writing, so it is the author not the era.
You have a great library!

From your description of her writing style, I think I’ll give Norton’s stuff a miss.
Fair, I think she is best for committed classic SFF readers, and better than you give it a miss rather than read it and not like it.
I've only read one Andre Norton, and that one didn't have a single woman in it. So weird
Yes, and even when she has them, they are very much secondary. Which one did you read?
@OmnivorousReader star born.
