    Brilliant James. All of us 50 somethings had the best of times in the 80,s with packed bars and nightclubs, when we spent all week looking forward to Friday and Saturday nights out. Feel sorry for the young today not getting to experience this. I grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne where the nightlife there and nearby Whitley Bay was just amazing......just wish I could go back in time !!

    The pub trade is fast dying out James, these little gems of yours are actually helping to document the last gasps of our once plentiful "home from homes" & local community establishments. Thank you for that.

    • @saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555
      @saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      I don't think it's dying out. I travel all over and you have regional winners.....and losers. For instance, l live in Saltaire, pubs and bars do well for a little place, a mile away Shipley is quieter although much bigger, another 2 miles is Bradford which is a dead zone. Next door is Leeds which is banging.

    • @1SteveSmith
      @1SteveSmith 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555 Hi, I was literally born within the pub trade in 1965. My parents were pub owners and I grew up within the pub that they owned until I moved out to live with my girlfriend at age 21. I have seen the pub trade decline for myself, especially since the smoking ban. For instance just last year alone 500+ pubs closed down for good (these are government figures for 2023). Younger folk are not using Pubs in high enough numbers to replace the trade of the older folk who are dying off. I am not saying that there aren't occasional local exceptions to this, but, nationally & generally the pub trade is dying a slow and painful death. A quick check on the losses registered by the top Pub chains will demonstrate this. Just check "pub closures by year" & you will see for yourself. All the best 👍

      Rising costs for breweries and customers. Not as many shoppers day drinking as shops are closing. Sad really.

    • @Buddhavibez
      @Buddhavibez 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Covid was the nail in the pub coffin?. People started drinking at home?. People now have their own bars built in the garden?. Safer to drink at home?

    • @saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555
      @saltaireorangebicyclechopp8555 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Buddhavibez l'm not finding that, it depends where you live & visit. 2 weeks ago l was in Leeds with my son, Leeds pubs were rammed at 1pm Saturday. I paid over £13 for 2 pints. We then got the train to Bradford to watch the football, same 2 pints in Bradford £5.60!! But Bradford was very, very quiet.

    I bloody enjoyed that James.. Two old friends reminiscing and seeing how times have changed .. Mark seems like a guy who can look after himself and good to have on your side when walking around a place that looked past it`s best. ... Sad though how time has taken us into the future but has destroyed a lot of the past. We can never get those times back and no matter what we think, the powers that be, call it progress. Thank you James/Mark for a wonderful video that many of us would love to do ourselves.

    Superb content, as always, and I know I've said it before but you're a welcome breath of fresh air from naysayers, doom merchants and drama seekers. Vlogs like this might hopefully remind some people what they're missing in terms of the social interaction, chance encounters and reyt laughs you get in pubs but can't recreate by staying at home. At least people who might not be able to get out and about like they once could can watch this and have their fond memories refreshed, and some more might give "gooin' dahn't boozer" a swansong before it vanishes altogether.

    Great video. 40 something years ago I lived in Rotherham. I worked at Sheffield art college and was a barmaid at the High House pub. I met my husband in the Mailcoach. I’ve been living in Brighton for 45 years but sometimes visit family. We went back into Rotherham town centre last year and was shocked at how down hill it had gone. Take Helen back to the Cuttlers when there is an event on , it absolutely rocking. Thanks James.

      The Dickens was legendary. The story of it's closure and re-opening as 'Sports' was one drug bust too many. Never knew if that was true or not. Wasn't into that scene. Just the pub scene. It was actually quite a nice place as Sports for a good few years. Though it did give me a laugh on one of my first visits in an afternoon just after it opened as Sports. Had to take off my (expensive designer) leather jacket because it was unacceptable to their dress code. They let me just hold it rather than bar me entry so all's well to be fair.

      I live in Thorpe Hesley and the Horse & Tigers still a decent pub. I had my first drinks in the Sportsman & Blacksmiths which are sadly no longer there. Masons reinvented itself as a gastro pub a few years ago. Red Lion has struggled a bit recently but the Ball is still going strong and the Travellers has now reinvented itself as a pub restaurant called The Barley.

    In the late '70's early 80's we would go up & down the pubs on Westgate on sat night, the next Sat do the same on Wellgate, the Mail Coach was were all the bikers would park up through the archway, I remember during the hot summer of '76 everybody sat outside on the pavement at night on Wellgate. My hubby & his 4 brothers got free drinks Xmas day lunchtime coz they lived on Wellgate & went in more or less every night. Then the town centre the next weekend & finish up at The Trades club coz it was close to dash round to the bus station for the last bus. I remember your grandma James, such a glamorous lady, I worked across the road at Masons jewellers our boss & Elsie were always backwards and forwards selling each other stuff. Great memories.

    Extra info for your viewers regarding the last place you visited to eat. (That did look a lovely dinner btw.)
    It was originally called The Florence Nightingale as a pub. Because the building there had previously been Rotherham's maternity hospital until the late 1960's I believe? Only reason I know is because that is my birth place. It was actually quite a posh (and decent) pub for Rotherham when it first opened. Though a bit of a walk out of town from the main pubs.

    Hi James. Just discovered your channel and I love it. As a french guy in love with the UK I really appreciate your positive outlook on the country. Yes there are problems and things, perhaps, are not what they used to be but it's true the world over. The Brits hold possibly the world record for their ability to constantly put their own country down. The media, of course, leading on this trend. I have spent a big chunck of my life, 40 years, living and travelling around the UK. This is a fantastic, diverse and , for the most of it, a beautiful place. The Brits always complain about everything, not realising that things are often much worse in many other countries. The NHS, for example, is for ever put down in the public opinion. People, even in the USA, do not have this luxury. It indeed saved my life and the lives of many many more. Yes James, the video I have visualised so far are showing that numerous places with an awful reputation often do not fully deserve the bad press they receive. Please continue your good work because looking at the glass half full is the only way for the nation to go forward and from strength to strength.

    Not boring at all James, I really enjoyed that - brought back some great memories (I used to work in Rotherham and went out drinking in the late 80s/early 90s). It’s a shame the Charters and Tut N Shive is no longer there. That steak looked amazing - I need to go there!

    Good show mate: part #2 needs to be pubs / clubs at night in the evenings. You must have enjoyed the vital research for this one. No money for this one! ie juke box. I worked at the Scottish & Newcastle brewery in Manchester for 20 years, we had beer tasting at the lunch time and always spat it out of course..lol..

    I was born in Rotherham and drank in most of the town centre pubs. We didn't know it then, but they were to become the 'good old days'. Top shout for Wingy Comp - we used to call it 'Schoolditz' after Colditz camp. 71 to 76.

    I enjoyed that James. I loved going up the pub of a Sunday dinner time with my old man for a few pints, it was always a tradition going back from donkeys years ago. Great piece, nice for you to catch up with your buddy. Me and the good lady did a Yorkshire weekend a couple of years back, Barnsley Leeds and then Rotherham over three nights, we took in a game at the New York Stadium as I think it was called just like all romantics would. Strangely a few locals said don’t go out in Rotherham on the Saturday night so we went Barnsley instead which was buzzing. Old town looked all right though

    Great Vlog James. From Rotherham but live in Cornwall now. Club Pachas, what a place, if you got turned away by the bouncers then it was off to Harveys in the market. The Zone came along later as the nightclub to be at. I was literally naming all the pubs as you went along. Some of them unrecognisable. Feofees used to be great, but like many other pubs its been "Starbucked" (they all look the same). I've got to have a pub crawl with mi brother next time I'm up there. Great content mate, would love to see more of this.

    Florence used to be where the student nurses used to go straight from work and on their off nights.
    Alternating between dance and rock DJ's, it was a heck of a place.
