    I just can't resist telling this ! My step Mother quit smoking at 78, under orders from her doctor. When I last visited with her at 98 she was sharp as a tack and complaining about how dumb people were on Wheel of Fortune ! She did not live to 100 but almost. Some people just seem to be tough. Her Mother lived to be 93.

    It's pretty bonkers that the study shows that (for men) not drinking alcohol at all will have a worse impact on your life expectancy than having more than 2 drinks a day; even have 1 drink is worse than having 2 which seems to be optimal. I feel like there has to be some kind of unexplored information in there.
    Maybe it's just stress relief! It would be cool to see a study of alcohol vs. meditation or something like that.

    Very curious about the impact of good sleep. I struggled my whole life and finally in 2022 started sleeping at least 7 hours a night. Now I can finally sleep 8-8.5 hours a night, I feel so much better, but I wonder how much harm it has already caused me. Maybe it's better not to know, as the stress may shorten my life even more...

      Some evidence I’ve seen suggests that even if sleep is somewhat poor, if one exercises regularly “undoes” the increased risk one has by not sleeping enough and not exercising. But also some people have genetic predispositions to needing less sleep. Some actually can do well on only six hours of sleep, for example.

    • @nimverxza2485
      @nimverxza2485 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I had a similar problem and have only recently fixed it. I think you should compare your better sleep schedule of 8 hours a night (and hopefully for the rest of your life) to if you didn’t have as many problems but still had a night of two when you went with suboptimal sleep. Extremes are where you learn the importance of sleep and make the decision to continue trying to live as best as possible.

    In another longitudinal study of nearly 6000 British civil service employees followed for 17 years, successful aging was identified in 12.8 percent of men and 14.6 percent of women at follow-up. The strongest predictor of successful aging was socioeconomic status at midlife. After adjustment for socioeconomics, not smoking, diet, exercise, moderate alcohol intake (in women), and work support (in men) predicted healthy aging. Per Up to Date

    Good info and I support the conclusions you have highlighted. But, as you said, there are exceptions. My father smoked for 69 years, likely drank more than you referenced (how do you convert grams to shots?), consumed a box of Cheezits a day (they are orange so that counts as a vegetable, right?), and was slightly overweight, but not obese. He died 2 months shy of 94. Hopefully I can do at least as well since I haven't emulated his lifestyle!

    At 85 one might as well party and throw all caution and efforts to the wind, as it won't make much of an increase in life span compared to doing nothing. But wait, there's a bonus -- The few extra years you may have achieved will be spent in old age and probably infirmity - so facing the inevitable may actually result in less suffering. That said, you might as well party a bit earlier, when it is more enjoyable, at 75.

      Yeah, they said he don’t explain why; they simply analyze the data from the great number of people. This doesn’t mean that anyone individual might be better off never drinking alcohol. And if people really look at it carefully, they might actually come to the conclusion that the enjoyment of a small amount of alcohol over a period of decades is worth a year or two at the end, because anyone individual factor does not get people another 10 years.

  • @oolala53
    @oolala53 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Interesting at the end when he was recapping that the first thing he started with was weight, even though that is not the first thing, or even the second thing on the list. I would like to see a study that compares people of various weights, including overweight and obese and people who used to be overweight and obese, but who lost weight and was able to maintain it. That might be hard to find because how are you gonna know ahead of time that people are going to maintain the weight they lose.

Fat is complicated , and has many pros and cons . All the 100 year people seem normal body weight ie not favoring the low end to any significant degree - my seeing photos of them . Hard to know. How can it be that even in the worst category one still gains years? I would expect that category 3-5 (the worst ones) would have something likely negative added years.

  • @mellocello187
    @mellocello187 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    What you really want to do is drastically extend your middle age, rather than add years to the end of your life. You are probably not interested in lying in a nursing home bed for 10+ years. You want to keep going and feeling great in your 50s - 90s.

    My gran lived in rural Ireland, she drank water from a spring, breathed fresh unpolluted air, ate lots of veg she or a neighbour grew, she drank milk straight from the cows, the meat was from either her farm or a neighbours, she was active with work around the farm, she never smoked or drank alcohol.....she lived to 83. Most people living in the city can't even match that type of life, but I don't know that she lived any longer then the city dwellers. Unless you do something really spectacular with the way you are living I am not sure you are going to move the needle on life expectancy much.

    This doesn’t actually predict health span. We don’t know how many of those people had five or 10 miserable years even with the best health habits. I’m not saying they did, I’m just saying they didn’t show that. And some people love being alive, no matter how bad things are, but others don’t. my father lived to be 83 but I would say his last four years at least were very uncomfortable. I sometimes wonder if I could’ve given him truth serum and asked him when he was suffering from bone cancer if he would’ve been willing to die on the operating table for the quintuple bypass he had a few years before that. It also doesn’t say how long the people practice the habits. Adopting the habits later, may have a much smaller effect, though I would bet the person would feel more vital.

    Empirically I have seen that the quality of life is much higher by doing these basic items. Add in supplementation and targeted nutrition and juicing and then you see some enormous benefits.

    • @orion9k
      @orion9k 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Juicing is bad, you're filtering out all the healthy fibers and basically just drinking pure sugars that otherwise would be packed in fibers, which would otherwise limit or slow down the sugar uptake.
