- Thanks so much for taking the time to check out my first-time reaction and musical analysis of Diana Ankudinova singing "Wicked Game" -- I think Diana has one of the most interesting and unique voices on the planet, and I really enjoyed digging deep into the musicality, vocal technique, and voice science of what's going on. Isn't her voice amazing?

Big love to my fellow voice nerds out there because I went DEEP on this one -- Diana seriously has one of the coolest and most unique voices I've ever heard. It was a lot of fun to check this one out and analyze it -- hope you all enjoy!
You also could react to La Signora Battle Theme[All Phases]
It's not a song but it's the type of music that needs an analysis
I recommend one good singer to you. Her name is 'Sohyang'. She is a Korean national treasure singer and gospel singer.
She covered 'I Have Nothing' and was invited by David Foster, the original songwriter and Whitney Houston producer, as the main singer for
his 30th anniversary performance.
There, I sang 'I Have Nothing' and 'I Will Always Love You'.
Her songs and covers are a real incredible diva that makes you feel overwhelmed and moved the moment you hear it. There are so many other good songs, but I hope you enjoy listening to these two songs in full.
I like your reactions, but Ankudinova's voice and manner of performance - no. That's why I watched it without rewinding. But this is the first and last time )))). But your reactions to the singers I'm interested in, I will continue to watch with pleasure.
I definitely recommend you react to Rechenka on the same show as this one but a year previously when she was 14. There's a great moment where she sings a note that droooooooops right down her range.
Plus her ability to exhibit exceptional control of a yodel while she's being hoisted into the air.
@@carpelibrarium8522 I second this! Wicked Game and Rechenka are my favorite performances of Diana. She did THAT at age 14, incredible.
Her story is a terrible story with the happiest ending. She was cast out by her birth mom at age 3 with a broken collarbone (which says a lot about the abuse she suffered). Her aunt left her in a orphanage. Eventually, a worker in the orphanage adopted her. She was so traumatized nobody could make her speak at 4 years old. The therapists suggested her mom to make her learn how to sing first. The rest is history. She is a jewel . Her adoptive parents adores her and she adores them too. Her mom is always with her supporting her in everything she does.. She won two singing contests as a teen . Diana is 19 now and making a singing career.
Diana actually won over 50 singing competitions as a young girl before the You are Super shows.
Despicable woman. Anyone want to bet she tries to worm her way into Diana's life now that she's famous?
Peter, as your audience may or may not know, Diana Ankudinova was only 15 when this performance took place during the 2019 season of a talent show for disadvantaged teens called “You Are Super”. Diana was not happy with her higher vocal range and really concentrated on improving it which can be heard when you listen to her cover of “Can’t Help Falling In Love” by Elvis Presley which you reacted to already.
Diana is also a polyphonic singer which in itself is an extremely rare talent for someone so young to have mastered. Polyphonic singing is a vocal technique that creates two, sometimes three different tones at the same time which adds to the harmonic overtones and undertones which can make it sound like two different voices at the same time.
This polyphonic sound is why some people think she is using a voice synthesizer to manipulate her sound, or there's another voice singing off stage, or she is lip-syncing over a prerecorded track. There is no electronic voice manipulation with her voice going on at all, what you are hearing is all Diana Ankudinova. As a final note, Diana Ankudinova won the 2019 season of "You Are Super".
Thank you for bringing up that she is polyphonic, which Peter did not mention.. It is not super apparent, but not many people’s ears can pick up. I truly appreciate the “layered pitch”; amazing!
God !!!! You are killing me . Let me hear her sing😢
@@Soulsearcher187he told you that he was going to interupt and to go see the full version first 🙄
During the ending of ‘Can’t Help Falling In Love’ the blend of tones were beautiful and telling when listening. I absolutely love hearing this rendition of Wicked Games.
She was 15 in this performance.
She was 15 at the time. Check out her “Human”, “Personal Jesus”, “Rechenka”, “Crow”, “Personal Jesus”, “Twist in my sobriety”, “What a beautiful world” and many more!!
Hi Peter,
To answer your question: Diana has said that everything about her performances is rehearsed; over and over. Right down to her every movement. She does this so that she doesn't have to think during the performance. She simply lets the performance happen; on its own. She says that, in general, she can't remember anything that she does while on the stage.
Diana does an amazing song called Rechenka when she was 14 but she also has a video of Oh Darling when she was 10 which is unlike any 10 year old I've ever seen.
Since I discovered Diana Ankudinova more than a year ago, I have watched approximately twelve billion reaction videos, and frankly they’re not capturing my attention so much these days. Not so with your reactions! A very nice mixture of technical expertise and genuine appreciation for this amazing artist! I look forward eagerly to your next visit to her music! You might try some of her recent stuff-she’s using her higher range much more, and no less effectively!
In this video she is 14 y.o.. This is a Russian competition for the kids from the broken families. Her mother dropped her of at the orphanage when she was a baby, she was adopted buy the woman who is her mother now, you can always see her backstage. Amazing life journey.
I watch the Diana reaction videos just see the faces of people. I’ve seen several where the reactors can’t believe that is her real voice.
What is even more sensational is she was only 14 when she sang this and won the show. Awesome talent. Diana as her story is told was so abused as a child she could not speak, her adoptive mum, a speech therapist, thought maybe if we teach her to sing we might bring her out of her shell. Well we see the results.
Thanks for your informative and enjoyable reaction.
Diana was 15 years old in this performance. She had many speech problems due to a very dramatic early childhood. (See Wikipedia) and started singing at 5 years old as a remedy.
Thanks for the reaction , the fact that Diana is only 15 years old in this production makes this performance more unique and fascinating .
Diana Ankudinova is just a storehouse of talents and surprises. Her beauty is in everything - music, vocals, appearance, style, versatility, emotions! It is impossible not to admire this girl!
Thank you for your excellent reaction and analysis.
She was only 14 here. 😁
Please react to Diana performing Rechenka. It has an interesting story (somewhat like opera in that respect). She portrays a young, orphaned girl about to be married. She goes to the river (Rechenka) which is symbolic of the veil between life and death, there to ask advice of her dead mother.
The performance and the vocals are astounding given that she was only 15. She also does things with her voice which you may not have heard before. It's incredibly evocative and haunting.
Thanks Peter. I just love her unusual voice. Diana has been vocally trained since she was 6 years old. She is now 19.
If she chose to go in that direction, she would be a very, very rare operatic dramatic contralto, who no doubt would be in great demand in all the houses. She was 16 here and still developing so I would guess that each note was planned. She was 18 when she sang Can't Help Falling In Love and you can hear the difference. You need to check her out at 14 or 15 singing Rechenka, it is a Russian Folk Song, but you will love it, magnificent performance.
She was 15 here and 14 at Rechenka.
Diana is a diamond, who survived in terrible life. Her mother tried to kill Diana a few times, she broke her collarbone and left her at bus station, where Diana was found at age 3. Diana told once That she had a bad dreams about her mother to age 10 and her new mom moved to another city because of Diana’s psychological health. Diana is flower in the storm.
I love it when you get nerdy
She is a master yodeler so that "riffing" at the end is right in her wheelhouse....
My favorite performance of her is the song translated as Finicky Horses or Ornery Horses or Fastidious Horses, but definitely check out Rechenka (Реченька). She also does some fantastic yodeling, which you can find videos of her doing when she was very young.
Diana is skilled in yodeling. Perhaps that is what is peeking through at the end here. Beautiful.
Wow her voice is magic
Hi Peter! Excellent and interesting reaction, time flew by unnoticed. Your question (16:30) can be answered like this: Diana often performs these compositions at concerts and it is always almost indistinguishable from the original performance. Except when she makes changes consciously, as well as age-related changes in the timbre of her voice. Fourteen-year-old Diana, remained only in the records, but nothing can be done about it.
Rechencka will show her use of yodel in the expression of grief in a strong folklore song arrangement. A world class presentation in this competition.
Diana is an awesome yodeler; the final riffs sounds a lot like yodel to me. You can check her “Yodel time” performance, where none of the judges hit the button, because she was too good to need help!! (The goal
of that competition).
I think you are in love with her voice. Definitely some deep happenings here. Thank you for another fabulous breakdown of this woman's amazing talent.
Hi Peter, why does it take you so long to react to Diana again she is a phenomenal singer and I was looking forward to your reaction to this song. Diana was only 15 at the time she performed this. She was 18 in your last reaction. Please react to Diana performing, Human, By Rag’n’Bone Man. Look forward to your next reaction to Diana
Hi! Diana was 15 years old when she performed at the competition. Diana's voice mutated then. Now the range of Diana's voice is from C3 to B♭5.
C3 to B♭5 is the range she sang can't help falling in love with.
This vocal timbre is hypnotically original - amazing analysis and please, more 'nerdy Pate' :D
Thank you for your reaction 👍 I'm glad you listened to this song🔥 Diana has gorgeous vocals🔥, do you agree?😉)
Go check “the crow” - another amazing by Diana ❤️
Please check "the crow"❤ by Diana A.
The song mess me up I listen to it on repeat a couple of times and just zoned out to the point where I think I had out of body experience for a moment. I love her voice.
Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova's video. I do enjoy your professional reactions. Please consider reacting to Diana rendition of 2 Russian folk songs. One is called Rechenka that she performed when she was 14. The second song is entitled Oh It Is Not Yet Evening. Which was performed more recently. About the same time she performed Can't Help Falling In Love. I would enjoy hearing your analysis on both songs.
Please write to Diana and sing a duet! I think it will be great, it will be necessary to pick up a song of course, but for a TH-cam video it would be exciting.
Kovacz 'My Love - My Love -
A wonderful young ARTIST with a unique timbre of voice! Excellent performance! A real mini-performance of the artist! Great professional response! Thank you! GOOD LUCK!
When I was in high school, I taught myself to sight read by using where my voice flipped into head voice. I knew I could sing an A4 chest but had to flip on the B4. It drove me crazy that I couldn't chest belt a B4 (especially as the Baker's Wife in Into the Woods). Thanks to you, I now know that I was/am not alone! Fantastic R&A as always!
Really enjoyed your video reaction. I think the really remarkable thing about Diana was that (I think) she was only about 16 when she appeared on this (Russian) talent show. Her singing is so sophisticated and nuanced and mature, for a relatively young singer.
I always learn something
Diana was 15 here. Amazing commentary. Enjoyed it.
She is trained in opera, and was a champion yodeler at 11years old. She is14 years old at this competition. At 11 no one turned around for her yodeling. At 14 she won this competition. You should checkout the two other performances for this competition.
she is way younger is this video than in the other (cant help falling in love) and yet she had the same quality back then
Rechenka would likely intrigue you- highly recommended! Did you notice Igor Krutoy in the last judging chair? He had been criticized for not pushing his button earlier, but he claimed he didn’t want to interrupt her and waited for a suitable break. I found Diana through Dimash as well. Both extraordinary singers. Cheers from Canada!
Not only is it dark but theres a warm brilliance that makes it very enjoyable and keeps it out of novelty. I Want to hear it again and enjoy it.
❤DianAngel❤
She was 14 there.
Valeu!
Diana is just mind blowing. Great artist and person. She’s overcome so much and remained honest and sensible.
Thank you for the great analysis!
I don't know why, but I like to watch reactions to my favorite singers or songs. I listen to what I like in the company of those with whom I like. Something like that. And I learn a little something new about singing.
For me, "I Can't Help Falling in Love" was the most impressive and shocking in terms of the impact of the voice. I like Diana's other songs because of her timbre and her ability to convey emotions. In songs in Russian, there are often strong lyrics that add goosebumps =)
I think you like her timbre too. So shock is not a necessary component to enjoy listening.
Believe it or not, Diana is an expert yodeler. I think this must be and advantage in being able to manipulate her vocal cords. Her performance of Rechenka at age 14 demonstrates her mastery of this technique among others. It’s also interesting to see how she has grown in range and expression over the years to age 18 in The Mask Must Go On.
thank you for your genuine reactions and your theoretical technical contribution to what is happening. The rest of the reactors first watch a few videos to then be surprised and repeat all the same thing without knowing what they are talking about even ^^ another diana song in the same contest that keeps it complete with that low and dark tone is HUMAN. sorry for my English**
Adding another comment... If you see this Peter... I believe it was the Fairy Voice Mother that said Diana's pharynx is one of the Wonders of the World. I'll look for it again cause it has stuck with me! Found it and correction she said Diana's Larynx is the 8th Wonder of the World. You can see her Larynx very well in this performance when she turns her head to the side during the "yodel" ish section if want to look for it 😉
This performance was my introduction to Diana, but Rechenka is among my favorites as it is shamanistic in quality when she laments to the river gods.
Would love you to review her Cossack folk song not yet evening
It is a masterpiece in my humble opinion and
For you
You can see her tonsils in the final shot
Thank you!!!! Diana-15yo!!! Amazing!!! Mysterious!!! Beautiful!!! Awesome!!! 🤯🤩😍✨❤️🙀🙏👍✨♥️
Couldn't wait for you to get to this one! Yay! Loved the comments and analogy of this one. Would love to hear what you think of Diana singing 'HUMAN' , it's almost primal!
Thanks for returning to Diana Ankudinova. You offered a very interesting 20mins video
She's a polyphonic singer!! Shes singing several notes at once, she sounds like a siren or an ancient goddess. Watching her perform live must be hypnotic
Great performance Diana!
And excellent professional analysis!
Diana - bravo, and for the analysis - like and thank you!
You really need to listen and react to Rechenka (River). It is my favorite of all her songs, very primal sounding. I think you will enjoy it, and there is yet more vocal technique than this song. I think she was 14 when she sang it.
And her "tasteful riffing" is the same sound that a bowed string player makes when plaing grace notes. (I formerly played violin and viola in middle/high school symphonies, chamber orchestra, small ensembles and some civic orchestra playing before marriage & kids.)
You should listen to her singing " Human ". It's really Good also! I like your Professional knowledge and break down of her ability to sing. You waxed the others who Try to critique her singing. Knowledge is key! Others need to re-learn before they try to analyze and give they're reaction(s). Diana was 14. Mind blowing! 👍
I wonder how much of the tonal quality has to do with her native language and speech patterns. This was something I noticed with Shakira when she first became big; the way she pronounced words in English had a different quality than ‘native’ speakers. It’s a fun concept, and a nice reflection of how culture colors art.
It certainly does play a role as far as pronunciation, and I hear what you mean with Shakira. Opera singers from Eastern Europe and Asia, for example, generally have a darker sound and more tongue tension simply because of their native tongues
Peter, you definitely guessed with the release of the reaction to Diana Ankudinov-she recently passed a line of 100,000 visitors in three days from the release of the song, the text and music of which Diana herself wrote.Thank you for your attentive attitude to her work!
I saw you performing the song "Feeling Good" on the porch in your porch.
Diana Ankudinova performed this song at the age of 13. "2017.05.21. "Feeling Good" (Cover). Diana Ankudinova. Solo concert and since then she has not performed it.
You will be interested in comparing the song with its interpretation

Feeling Good".
Yes.. she does a great Feeling Good.. at age 14 th-cam.com/video/bWzovINwPt8/w-d-xo.html (there are 3 versions of her singing feeling good) use the link I provided for the best one.
Diana has such a wonderful tone....and from such a young age. I love her "Rechenka".
If you haven't Reacted to Forestella really recommend you look at their versions of "Shape of you", "Bad Romance" or "Bohemian Rhapsody".
A visit card of Diana is the song Rechen'ka (River)
I love the explanation you give of her dark timbre and your great appreciation of her unique voice. That last part of her belting is a natural yet well rehearsed type of yodel she is known for that is on display in Rechenka and other folkloric songs. Plaease react and analyze more of Diana.
Thank you for your attention to Diana and the reaction to her. She's a really talented girl. I like.
Pay attention to a new video has been released on Diana's channel, the song is written by Diana, the words and music of the author.
The next should be 'Rechenka' by her. You'll love it, Pete))
actually, it's not pop music-it's rather closer to the crossover style-her voice and musical processing all point to this.
Thank you for your reaction to Diana Ankudinova!!! Like!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Mmmmmm, another wonderfully informative R&A Peter! I loved it when you demonstrated how different positions of your tongue & larynx(?) darken your tone. The only other times I remember hearing women with a vocal quality similar to Diana's: some of Cher's songs (moreso in early recordings I believe); & a friend who's been very hard of hearing from birth & who has a very deep, almost echoing quality to her speaking voice.
Still think some of Diana's songs (not necessarily this one) deserve the Vipers, Peter! Would love to see you react to Diana singing Human, or one of her recent releases that you like. Thanks! 🤓
OMG Peter I love you so much, but this is over the top - She and her artistry Is a League on Her Own!
Dude, you are a wealth of information. You're my newest and greatest musical sensei. Domo arigato.
Go listen to her Wonderful World w jazz scatting and tempo/key changes. It shows her pronunciation with words ending in Ing, En, End, etc has a polyphonic fuzz to it even at speak singing. Which prompts to question the early life injury in the clavicle throat area and remodeling to tissues in an already larger larynx even at that age.
U R amasing ❤ ...
I don't know shit about all these high-fltat-b-mojors-in-minor-vocal-folds.
I like Diana's singing and YOU sounding so low and professional. Plunking those keys and educating me on stuff I would never understand.
Dude, I LOVE it! Love listening to stuff and professionals go apeshit on what they deem amazing! 🤝
Another great reaction and, yes, interesting for us non-vocalists to learn about more technical & anatomical details, too - thanks! If you do another one from Diana, try Rechenka. Performed at just 14 years old, it is still one of her most breathtaking: th-cam.com/video/fEcvVINA304/w-d-xo.html
I believe Diana has had voice training for most of her life. Her long-time teacher actually passed away some years ago and I had read she really struggled with that. With all that said, I'm sure much of her skill is natural talent but its pretty mind blowing to see how far she's come from when she was little. I'm sure puberty is a huge contributor to that... but she seems to be improving each time she returns to the stage.
Good reaction (as always, though). It is interesting to listen to a professional analysis of vocals (and performances in general). Through Diana, I discovered your work, Peter, which is now a priority for me to watch (it happened so).
There is a big difference between numerous reactors whose purpose is simply to goggle in surprise and such a thorough professional analysis (though immediate emotions are also important, of course).
Diana is special. You explain the physical aspects of what is going on, but something you really don't touch on, but is very much part of how she can sound so dark even without hitting extremely low notes. Her larynx is very developed and allows her to sound the way she does. Apparently she sang that way from an early age. In this video in particular, when you have a side view of her neck, you can see it. I'm linking a voice coach that explains this really really well (not that you wouldn't know, but more that I don't have the ability to describe it well).
She also mentions something you touched on a bit, and expands it... Diana can yodel, and gets yodel sounds in her singing. Not only can Diana do traditional alpine type yodeling, but her regular singing also has what are sometimes called Gaelic yodels, which are yodeling sounds in other sorts of music like pop or rock. And incredibly good example of this is Dolores O'Riordan (The Cranberries).
In this video Diana is a few weeks away from turning 16, and it is almost an exact year after she did Rechenka.
I hope you cover the clips from her other competitions, you won't be disappointed. I think from a more serious/classic view, Dernier Danse, and an unexpected take on pop/rock, her version of Only Human.
The Fairy Voice Mother does a really excellent run down on her larynx being part of the equation to her unique sound,

Very enjoyable and informative. A lot of new words. Hope there's no quiz.
Diana is very talented and she has mastered the yodel technique. You should react to “Human” and “Rechenka” those are outstanding performances to see her vocal resources. 👍👍
Thanks again Peter for anothr excellent Diiana analysis- our beloved goddess- she is a special person with huge talent
I recommend this fantastic Diana song:«Rechenka» («Реченька») enjoy !
She has the voice I would expect the devil to have, with the power to influence minds and move mountains.
When listening to someone's voice, I tend to imagine/see or feel textures. For her it's velvet.
Amazing!
