you forgot one thing in your caluation, space! Sometime you forgot that by the time you finish building the kit you say to your self "where the hell am I going to place this model?". Even thou these kits are a reasonable size if you have the shelf space then your screwed. I had that problem afew years ago where I had no room for my new kits so I sold almost everything on ebay. As for what kit I should get I'll let you know when I figure that out!
Wow, this was really helpful. I'm just getting into gunpla kits right now, and I had a vague idea of what I was doing, but this made things far more clear to me. Thanks for making this video.
True, my cousin kept telling me to buy a Maser Grade, i bought Freedom last october 5. I fell in love with MGs and watched videos like Robet184's reviews online. Although building MGs are time consuming than HG, SD, or non grade. I can assure it is worth the money and effort. I moved on from figmas and nendoroids to Gunplas.
Early 1980's Magellan model was fun to put together. No snap together parts, just glue like model planes. I wish they'd make more models of the ships and vessels from Gundam shows, I'd buy them all in a heartbeat. They're hard to find in the US.
There are exceptions to the time-quality graph though. I had a great time building kits from Char's counterattack and 0080 when they came out. But the quality took a nosedive during 0083. Of course there is no need to worry about it now because they are now available as HGUC, except for Gerbera Tetra.
You will love it. I tried watching most gundam series and i never got hooked. Then i went to a manga store and when i went there , their were a LOT of gundams so i was like hm. So i baught a 15 buck Age 1 1/144 scale. I fell in love as soon as i started building. Not only for the fun of building them but watching the pieces look more and more like a gundam. I was hooked. than i wanted to find my next gundam so i read about them and fell in love with astray red frame he's awesome.
for me, i should buy gundam models that have these on the following: -pretty good and simple design -nice color scheme -amazing articulations -doesn't have lots of big ugly stickers -a model kit that looks like it doesn't have many parts that are easily tends to get snapped
The math you did was great and I totally agree what ever your desire should be the Main point in buying a kit and if your new go with HG or SD and so on and so forth great vid as always. Btw could you do Mg F91 next??
My answer is Buy your favorite model! Take me as an example at first I wanted to ask rrobbert the same question but since im a fan of the 00 series my 2 gundams are "Gundam 00 Raiser + GN sword 3 (or III however you wanna type it)" and "Arios".
I usually pick my kits by scale(1/100). That however, might end if I'm convinced I want something like the HG 00 Raiser + GN sword III because of all the options I have with posing it and it's many weapons. That, and playability. Once I've built a kit, I don't just pose it and leave it. MS Designs are also a factor on my part.
HGUCs are awesome. each kit contains the originality and creativity of a new series, but molded in higher quality plastic and sharper detail. You get the uniqueness of Gundam days gone by with modern day cutting edge quality construction!!!
Buy them all, the best advise I've ever heard and your right I already have 6 Exia(s): 1/100 Exia, 1/100 Avalanche Exia, 1/100 Trans Am Exia, MG 30th Anniversary 1/100 Exia, MG 1/100 Exia Ignition, Chibi Exia, I also have the movie release 1/144 00 Quan[T], 1/144 00 Seven Sword/G Inspection, 1/100 00 raiser, Chibi 00 Gundam and 0 Gundam, 1/100 Dynames, 1/100 Cherudim Desiner Ver., 1/100 Astraea and 1/100 Astraea type F and Im Currently Aiming for PG 00 Raiser and/or 00 Seven Swords Metal Build
I recently started building some, so I bought 2 as my first kits which were the 1/144 hg reborns gundam and the 1/144 hg 00 raiser+gn sword 3; never regretted buying either one
rrobbert184, I definitely agree with your explanation of new gen MG's. My MG Ignition mode Exia is so flexible and has so many moving parts, it has trouble standing.
I think we got actually acceptable (what I mean is that you can like the kit without having to be a fan of the show, OVA, or other fiction work) in 1996 and 1997, with the 08th MS team line and the endless waltz line. Plus, it probably was really 1999 when we got good, with the HGUC line.
I prefer to buy Gunpla coming from my favorite Gundam series, usually the main protagonist's mid season upgrade or final Gundam. But I'm also now interested in buying a main rival/antagonist's mid season upgrade or final MS.
lol why would someone buy an FG Exia? My first gunpla was a FG Dynames... took a few too many falls from my mom knocking it over while cleaning so it's somewhere packed away...but my collection is slowly growing... when I find it, I use it as a trial for weathering & battle damage.
hey robert. what about astray? it's got one of the best designs EVER and it's a lead. i'm getting it in perfect grade. i also factor in the time it takes to build, the longer the better! great video as always!
I like the Old shows, 00, some wing suits, and Unicorn Gundam. I like some stickers but some just bug me. Dry transfers are fun but water slides.... ugh. High Grades are indeed quite fun, did my first MG and I enjoyed it.
I know this has been already commented by a lot of people... so again just buy what YOU want. If you really must need some guide, go along with either HG's or MG's.
Great Video, man! My friend and I actually made up a Gundam Quality math sheet while having coffee last summer. I should try to find it and explain Gundam Series Math.
HGUC is great, and even the older modles are doin fine. bought me one gerbera tetra on EBay and what schould i say? its an old kit, but i love its design and i loved the movie. rrobert you're the best, awesome video.
@BleachFreak180 it depends on were u live if you cant really find a store or a web site go on ebay or some other site like that were u can bid for them but just look it up on the internet, look up a mall near and see if theres a madel store in the mall if there is pop in and see what they have.
i started with the sd kits but now im starting to drift towards astray models, i like their simplistic design and all of them only require really one manual just to build the ms (excluding amatsu)
I love stickers espically when i stick them wonky second i am too poor to buy any paint for my gundam (i dont want to paint them rlly) third i only collect the white coloured gundams because i think they are original
i honestly have NEVER watched a gundam series- i have watched other mech anime, but i think the models look awesome (most of them :p) and i want to tr building one
wow this video came out when i was having problems with choosing whether to buy mg shin musha gundam or a bunch of HG gundam 00 models tht would equal to the same price as the the MG
i my toss up would between RX-78-1 prototype with G-fighter or destiny full burst mode.i want something that stands out, that easy on the eyes and looks different or something that can change into different from for it remind me on my favorite show transformers ^^
man, they are making these so complex now that they should just put the electronics in one and make a real one. Gunpla is basically the blueprint for a full size one
Robert i really hope you won't stop your videos now that your collection is complete, also i need help evreryone anyone know where i can download or watch all Gundam series in English, all i have seen is wing and endless waltz and i loved them
i didn't realize this till it got later into your video but how to said that MG double zeta wasn't to bad, nether is the 1991 Hg double zeta, their some flaws in it like any model but it awesome and it the only way to get still 0.o
i just buy zeon and fed grunts suits cause they are badass and im trying to get the MG of the zeon's aces of the white wolf and crimson lighting i dont need the red comet
Wait a second thats not a gundam that guren lagan

im still into 00 models just because i love how much posibility there is in the 2nd season kits.
Early 1980's Magellan model was fun to put together. No snap together parts, just glue like model planes. I wish they'd make more models of the ships and vessels from Gundam shows, I'd buy them all in a heartbeat. They're hard to find in the US.
I found this very informitive thanks! I bought my first 144th scale Freedom Gundam kit yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed building it !
Buy ALL the Zaku Models
There are exceptions to the time-quality graph though. I had a great time building kits from Char's counterattack and 0080 when they came out. But the quality took a nosedive during 0083. yeah, u're right. they should definitely make a series out of it. astray is fabulous. anyway, keep up the good work. i'll be looking forward to it!

The Destiny Gundam is a detailed model. It even has clear effect part and a stand.I do recomend it.

People should read your channel information more because you always get the same questions, this is a good video.

I recently started building some, so I bought 2 as my first kits which were the 1/144 hg reborns gundam and the 1/144 hg 00 raiser+gn sword 3; never regretted buying either one
