    I really dont know why I watch your videos. Im not interested in Ovals, have never played iRacing, yet I watch almost any video of yours. They are interesting even for someone who doesnt really care and I feel like thats a great thing.

      Awesome! Lately I've been watching a lot of yugioh youtube videos even though I've never played the game, and I've actually taken a lot of inspiration from them on how to make something interesting for people who aren't particularly interested.

      I was the same way for a few years with other iracing creators until I got into the position to give it a shot. Some people just make quality videos perfect for people who are just casual viewers.

    These are good tips, here are some extra rules for the road racers:
    -You don't "own the corner" ever, but you have the right to pick a lane and hold it.
    -Similarly, even if another car barely gets his nose inside your quarter panel, it's a bad idea to still think it's "your corner" and cut him off. Forget about side to side overlap when attempting a pass or getting passed because it's irrelevant in ovals.
    -If you do perform a bump and run, you better be sure you're faster than your victim and that he cannot get back to you. Once you use it, all bets are off. It's not too smart to do this on lap 2 of a 100 lap race.
    -Lastly, hold a consistent speed on restarts. Nobody wants to have to deal with random check ups to avoid smashing into the guy in front of him and potentially causing a massive pileup. When you're the leader it's fine to try and change up the launch to throw people off a bit but brake checking the field behind you is unacceptable.

      funny you say that about restarts, i just got black flagged on Lanier today because the leader brake checked as soon as the pace car went off and let like 4 people pass him

      @@tristonmurdock609 If it's a REAL brake check, or say he hangs back from the pace car a quarter mile at half speed... File a protest. I've had it happen several times already in my very short iRacing career, and I filed protests that got the person who did it into trouble. Unlike RL racing sanctioning bodies, the punishments iRacing hands out are not publicized, which is a shame, because if people were made aware of the consequences of doing such things, and the upsides of taking the time and effort to file a protest, more protests would be filed, more cheaters would get a stern talking to, suspension, or worse, and people would stop doing it.
      I suspect the 2 or 3 people I've protested for precisely that have used that "trick" many times before someone bothered to turn their asses in, and I hope they think twice about it next time. I don't play, and even if I'm not affected, I can and WILL protest anyone I see doing that, every single time.

      This is exactly what i want more clarity on, people overtaking think they have the right of space on a corner exit even if they aren’t fully ahead, meaning they cut across you aggressively wich will result in contact and them spinning, to them it is „clear“ ahead because the front tyre is not next to their rear tyre, but logically they arent clear as the bper is still in the way, why would i need to slow down on a corner exit just because per definition they are ahead expecting no contact when cutting across agressively

    1:09 Important to note that the new GEICO Restart Zone has a couple of pitfalls to be aware of if you're in the first couple of rows. 1. It's REALLY EASY to anticipate the GRZ, and catch a penalty for exceeding the pacing speed. You will eventually find yourself first in line, so definitely PRACTICE holding _exactly_ the Pace Speed under yellow on EVERY yellow so when the day comes, and you're nervous because you're out front for the first time ever you don't blow your hard work by creeping up 300 RPM between Pit Entry and the start of the blue.
    ALSO - when you're in front, it's often to your advantage to WAIT FOR THE GREEN - because the person outside you is anticipating you going as soon as you hit the blue - and if you WAIT, you can sometimes get them to commit an unforced error - if they anticipate and get past you by even an inch, _they_ will catch a penalty for passing you.
    ALSO ALSO - When you're in front at a Superspeedway, DEFINITELY WAIT FOR THE GREEN. If you go early and get the jump on everyone at a Drafting Track, Yes, you'll run away from them, but then they'll be in the draft and you won't and the pack will _beat you up and take your lunch money down the back stretch_
    IF YOU ARE #2 - Stay close to #1 and look left as much as you can - ideally you want to be SBS, and not in a "Blue Angels" staggered formation when it's time to go, because the #3 car has a better view of the #1 car, and *often* they'll take your lunch money if you're already 1/2 car back from the leader. Keep it as tight and as close to dead even with the Leader as your skill and confidence allow you to when going into the Restart Zone.
    FINALLY - on a Restart, passing TO THE RIGHT of the car in front of you is always allowed.
    Passing to the LEFT of the car in front of you (in your line) _BEFORE THE S/F LINE_ has been known to catch the driver a penalty in some cases. The tracks and rules evolve over time, but updates are not always evenly applied across all series and across all tracks, so you're definitely safer executing a pass to the RIGHT until you cross the S/F. If you have a huge run on the left of the guy in front of you - make sure that you don't _actually_ get ahead of them until you cross the S/F, to err on the safe side.

      I think it's best to stay in line on restarts until you get to the S/F, even if you lose momentum. I have gotten penalties for passing on the left, and I have gotten penalties for passing on the right. It's not worth the risk to pop out of line and pass.

      Excellent advice for sure! This, along with the video is something everyone that's racing ovals, or planning to run ovals, should see. I'd say all this applies to most all types of oval cars from street stocks and legends all the way up to Cup cars. A big Thank You to the video creator and the author of the post. Much appreciated guys. I'd love to see iRacing do more in-depth tutorials such as this.

    Bad etiquette: You're running in the back most of the race, a caution comes out, so you stay out on old tires and screw the leaders' restarts only to end up where you were running anyway, often much worse.

      Gotta say I’m a spanish guy that usually Watches Indycar. Started iRacing and got tons of doubts about etiquette in ovals. Very different to run them yourself than to watch it on TV. Anyways 3 months in and I’m already A class and almost 4k and 4.45 Sr. for sure made some really bad choices and moves at the beggining. But raced a lot, knew when to say sorry and learn. Rookies was an overall shitshow but it’s a great way to learn. Now I think that I need to Perfect the tire saving techniques. But man oval racing is sooooo much fun.

      Also Simon, would like to point out that what really helped me get better and learn were the american drivers that usually explained my mistakes and helped me learn about everything. Usually really cool and thoughtful guys. Although sometimes people can get really toxic, even when you did nothing. With that kind of drivers is difficult to be able to learn anything. So in my opinion you guys could help us a little, like you did with me. We’re not used to oval racing nor do We usually have Channels that broadcast them. So it’s difficult for us to come in a race knowing everything! That way will probably get better foreign racers and better races.

      gotta admit I ignored Ovals for a long time because i thought i wouldn't enjoy them, only to absolutely love them when I finally gave it a decent go. Coming in from Road the unwritten rules definetly do take some time to get used to though. In my first race out of rookies the first thing I did whilst gridding up was to ask "hey, i'm totally new to this and fully expecting to get lapped, so do I go high in the corner to let leaders past?" and one of the americans gave me a quick crash course in which was highly appreciated

    Dive bombing under someone that has already started tracking to their apex. They basically make contact and get below you simultaneously, then cry about they had the position and you came down on them. Even if you were able to react fast enough and stay a lane high they would still slide job on corner exit. I think that's the one I see most often.

      I came here to say basically this. A lot of people take the 'if your nose is there you're entitled to a lane' to the extreme and think divebombing their nose in at the last second means the outside car must give them a lane.
      Once the outside car has already started turning down and is aiming for their apex it's not even a matter of etiquette. The outside car can't now just suddenly turn to the right, they're not going to make the corner if they do so, they're committed and the inside car needs to be aware of that. Contact is more or less inevitable if the inside car refuses to back out.

      Yeah I see a lot of this. You really gotta stick to your guns. A lot of main characters think the race is theirs to win and you're just an obstacle. That's obviously their corner, and you're just in the way - so they think "Ah yes I'll use more speed than this guy and get beneath him, then he *has* to give me the space and I shall overtake with ease forthwith!"
      And then they wonder why they keep crashing out and getting penalties. "Low SR why??"

      If I see a guy coming in on me I just ease up and let them go through.. usually they blow the exit anyway.

      I’ve seen Casey Kirwan on a stream racing Ferraris at Long Beach basically arguing this, because he divebombed himself up to the leader’s rear wheel (so, not even halfway) and took them out. Yeah he has enough talent to spare and would have won the race easily anyway, but his impatience made it a shitty win for himself and ruined the other guys race. And of course he blamed the other guy and said “l was there!”

    My policy has always been to collect myself at my expense rather than collecting someone else at theirs. In other words, if I’m wiping out for any reason, I’ll take myself out before trying to “save it” and taking anyone or everyone else out. My version of fun doesn’t involve ruining everyone else’s fun.

    Something I'd like to mention is that these are all good etiquette that everyone SHOULD use but doesn't mean everyone does....so being able to recognize drivers who aren't being courteous is another skill that is important in oval racing, if not all racing. That might be another good 10 minute video

    Another side to oval racing etiquette that gets lost a lot aswell is what to do when your wrecking/avoiding a wreck,
    1. Hold the brakes! if you are out of control or in the wreck hold your brakes, if you aren't on the brakes your car becomes far more unpredictable and dangerous, whereas if you hold the brakes your car will slow down and stop allowing other cars to navigate without further damaging your car.
    2. Wait for the field to pass. I know you might've been racing for the lead or fighting for a top 5 but if you don't wait for the field to pass by to recover your car you could blow any chance you had of driving back up the field by collecting another car while you're recovering your spun vehicle.
    3. Lastly slow down when a wreck happens. once the yellow flag is out the field is frozen, you can't gain or lose positions from slowing to avoid a wreck, all you do by racing through the wreck is risk involving yourself in the wreck and damaging even more race cars than is necessary.
    Otherwise this is an awesome video and I will be showing it to a few people I know who need some advice on oval racing etiquette :)

    For clarification, blocking is against the sporting code, but passing beneath the line is legal (although causing a wreck when returning to the racing surface is protestable.)

      IMO, blocking in what are essentially Nascar races is a viable and acceptable way of keeping your position, but it should be used situationally. Coming up off turn 4 at Dega, I have zero problems with the leader (or anyone else, for that matter) driving with their mirror, so to speak. That said, it should only be used in those types of situations, not say at the beginning of a race with 200 laps to go. What's the point? Between yellows, pit stops, and all that jazz, you will gain and lose positions before all is said and done, so trying to block the whole race is going to cause problems.
      If iRacing wants to be known as a 'simulator' instead of a 'game', then the rules of the sim should match the rules that apply IRL.

    7:35 _When to use the bumper to 'move' someone in the ARCA car_ - NEVER. NEVER EVER EVER _EVER_ *EVER* use the ARCA bumper. DO. NOT. DO. IT.
    The bumpers don't line up, and it won't be a 'bump' - it'll be 'lift his rear tires off the ground and turn him hard into the wall, ending a LOT of people's races' - Do Not Pass Go, Do Not Collect $200
    That's _Intentional Wrecking_ and it's against the Sporting Code, and is 100% protestable, every time, and it's nearly _always_ super obvious in the replay when it was on accident and when it was intentional, so if the other driver takes the time to snip a small video and submit a protest for it, you're basically screwed. (alternately, if it happens to you, it's almost always worth it to take the time to save the replay, snip out that little piece of it, and send the protest)
    The rest of the NASCARs do line up, but the Trucks have very fragile aero, and even a light wall brush can send you sailing backward through the field...so weigh the risk/reward for bumping in the trucks knowing that...

      If practiced you can bump, only on short tracks and for the purpose of moving someone out of the way; or a couple warning nudges to say I am here and I think I am faster.

      Counter-argument in ARCA cars: somebody throwing late blocks or trying to run in the preferred line when the leaders are coming two wide with the pack behind them. There isn't always going to be room or time to do anything but give them the bumper. Now, yes, if you're running in the pack at Daytona or 'dega, don't touch the guy in front of you, you'll make everyone mad, but there are always exceptions to the don't touch ever rule.

    to expand a bit on the the bumper usage a bit, on larger ovals it's way more riskier and depends on the car. 87 cars you can just give the lightest of taps to send someone a bit up and force them off the gas. But it's a high risk thing. not something I recommend doing on the regular. If you're at 1.5 miler or around that, I recommend exhausting other passing options but if the guy is slowing you down and letting the leaders get away and you don't have time to mess with him, that justifies the bumper to me. and if he's throwing blocks and is generally slow, they should expect the bumper at that point (but don't use the bumper at tracks like darlington, that never ends well).
    For short tracks a send later into the corner usually works but if that guy is pesky, bumping on the entry or middle of the corner will work. it really depends how some people take it, some will see it as a fair move, others will just straight up scream in chat about it. if you know how that person takes a slight bump to get them off line and are willing to do it, it's a nice move to have in the pocket and is a must at short tracks. especially north wilksboro or martinsville. just if you can help it don't make them lose like 5+ positions or just drill them. I'll be honest, if you hit someone hard enough to engage a 4x incident for a bump and run, that's not a bump and run that's a shunt and run. you just need to hit someone hard enough for them to let off the gas.
    and sometimes just running close to someone is enough for them to just let you have it. Just save the physical stuff for if you're running out of time to get to the leaders or this guy won't give it up no matter what.

    Overall, great advice! I would slightly disagree on the use of the bumper on ovals in iRacing these days. IMO, people using it today are not using it as a tool or a technique, it is a mistake on their part by missing a braking point or locking up tires, not as a means to facilitate a pass. As for lapped cars, agree 100% with what you said UNLESS they are racing for a position as well. In that case, all parties, lapped cars and leaders, need to have the situational awareness and do what is needed for all involved to continue racing with minimal impact to anyone. Great info for new folks not familiar with the discipline!

      If you find the right league with guys similar to speed the bumper is used without remorse but it used correctly like described. Official races are harder to facilitate a pass with a bump due too netcode and other internet wizardry.

    If you get a run on somebody on the restart (missed shift, spun tires, got caught out, whatever reason) it's acceptable to pass ONLY on the right. So inside lane takes the middle, outside lane takes the top. iRacing will black flag you if you try going the other way.

    Another unwritten law for races with single file restart (nascar Legends or Indycar) is to keep your car next to the outside wall to avoid someone passes you before the s/f line.

    6:21 another though on blocking: make your driving line unpredictable. It's hard to setup a pass on a driver when they seemingly don't have a pattern. One lap you enter turn 3 low & defensive - they think the next lap they can backup turn 3 to get a run out of 4 - but you're unpredictable and next lap you decide to backup/enter high into turn 3... this strategy works well assuming the person you're defending against is racing clean that day and they're not significantly faster than you. My general thought on blocking in iRacing is to just not do it. Racers in public iRacing lobbies are notoriously short tempered and won't put up with it for long... even in top splits.

    Hey guys Mark here. Passing below the yellow line is against the rules on iRacing except at super speedways. I protested someone in September for passing me below the yellow line at Talladega in Sept. for the win (he got me by .01). The reply I got from the steward was it is legal at super speedways only.

    I have some from my experiences:
    1) When pitting under green, announce that you are pitting if there are drivers behind you. Otherwise, they may run you over as you are slowing down to leave the racing surface. This is especially important on tracks where the low line is the preferred line.
    2) Don’t try to bump draft in ARCA or I***Car. Just don’t. Please.
    3) If you crash, don’t pull back up onto the track if you can avoid it, and especially don’t intentionally bring out a caution. That is protestable.

      Well, if you're up to speed, pull back on the track SAFELY. If you try to take the apron at speed at most of the ovals, you'll lose it and possibly take out everyone else too.

      If you crash, when you re-enter, don't cross the track. If you left the track to the inside, return on the inside and ensure you can cross to the sub-optimal line safely before doing so. Drivers coming up on you when you are re-entering will generally leave you room to enter on the side you're on. If you cross the track, they're not going to be able to redirect the momentum of their vehicle quickly enough to avoid you without wrecking themselves, and will often choose to just smash into you as you've ended their race regardless.

      Yeah the only time you should go three wide is when you have a serious run and you'll only spend a couple seconds 3 wide. Any longer than a couple seconds 3 wide and you're probably going to regret it severely. If you watch actual NASCAR drivers, they don't spend a whole lot of time 3 wide themselves. Most of the time, there's a significant speed differential to reduce the risk and make it viable. It's usually a combination of two battling cars slowing up and another car getting a good run that sets up the right circumstances for 3 wide to be viable. Or maybe 7th place is lapping 15th place while 1st place is lapping 7th place. There's enough pace differential there that a crash isn't likely as long as everyone can hold their line for a couple seconds.

    I suppose this applies more to league racing, but if you create a three wide situation and a wreck happens, it is usually your fault for going three wide in the first place. Especially in the early laps of a race, it is much better to wait and be patient.

    Last night I qualified 2nd twice.
    First time - 1st layed back and jump then started before green.
    Second time - 1st laid back didn't keep pace speed and got me black flagged for passing the leader because I did and stared normally
    Is it etiquette or a rule?

      That is a flagrant violation and is straight up cheating as far as I am concerned. When that happens, protest them. Every time, even if you're not in 2nd. The leader starts (on restarts), so they get that advantage, but they have to maintain pace car speed (within a reasonable margin, I'm not talking about trying to protest someone for going 3 mph too slow, but 30... yes!) until in the zone, then they go when they want to.

They aren't going to have live human stewards in every race to do it for us.

    I go with the 3 strike system before I ever make contact. I don't like being blocked particularly, so if you do it to me 3 times I might give you a light bump out of the way when I get close in the corner. At short tracks its a little different, I try to give a warning tap before I go for it, but if you are hurting my race at a short track, I will try to... uhh persuade you to move?

    Great advice and right on target. Unfortunately, too many drivers on iracing have no interest in etiquette. They do everything they can to not lose a spot, regardless of what position they're in. First or last.

    I'm 12+ yrs. on iracing and have run oval with many nascar drivers.. First look at the line of the driver you want to pass, if he comes out high
    then go in high and come out low to get your run.. if you stay even in the next turn, maintain your line.. (lift a bit on exit) . If a car is coming up fast on you.. let them go!..
    they are faster.. they may burn the car up or crash.. always run your pace and don't run THEIR pace.. the other guy may be burning his car down.

    In general, what I've found is that if I have to ask myself if I'm giving someone enough room, the answer is probably yes as long as none of us are wrecking. And being courteous never hurt anyone except a racer. So, learn how to block legally and do it as often as possible. For those who don't know, you get one block. Meaning: You can go from high to low, but not from high to low to high. If you go low and he decides to switch back high and pass there, you gotta let him by. You're always in the more advantageous position by being behind someone anyways.
    ETA: Forgot to add, overtaking is not a race to the apex. Just because you didn't brake so you technically got to the apex before the guy you were trying to pass, doesn't mean you just performed a legal pass and that the guy you just smashed into didn't give you enough room. It means you didn't brake for a corner because you have main character syndrome and expect everyone to read your mind when you're trying to pass from 3 car lengths back.

    Turns out I have bad etiquette late in races. If I've been battling for lap after lap I have no issue waiting a bit to turn in or using a bit less track to get a pass finished.

    An an oval openwheel guy I disagree on blocking. It's never okay but taking the line they want to pass using in advance of them or changing lines to it naturally is okay say it took rubber or humidity change brought in a line and they showed it to you but cutting off a run is completely unacceptable so is contact 99.9% of the time and that's coming from someone who has successfully bump drafted with pavement sprints on superspeedway in iracing so yes I have plenty of finesse if you've ever tried the pavement sprint and yes you can gear it for super speedway

    I wish this video played before people try ovals in a race. I think the main problem I’ve run into is people can’t just race and try for the best possible position they just race to win or wreck out.

      This all started with the influx during 2020, if you watch broadcasts from leagues prior the racing etiquette was unbelievable. All everyone cares about now is irating, safety rating could mean jack squat these days.

      i’ve finished podium and sometimes even won countless races just by driving smooth and calm and letting everyone else push beyond their limits. oval racing in iRacing these days is becoming less of a race and more of a battle to survive, especially on short tracks

    Love the vids, just want to say maybe don't promote the idea that starts and restarts are the best place to pass people and make up positions, instead whenever possible preach that "long run speed" and patience is also a great way to pass people and leads to cleaner / green flag races! We need to change the culture, as you have stated in your other video about the quality of official races in 2023. Love the 2022 vs 2023 that stats you pulled in that one, btw! That was very interesting.

    WIth the trucks, xfinity, and next gen cars, you don't really have to "bump draft". If you get close enough you almost make a "draft bubble" that in my opinion is much much faster and safer all around.
    Also, another one people don't seem to know:
    Say youre at a super speedway. You are pushing another guy on the high line all the way to the front. As soon as he passes the lead car, he jumps in the bottom row and leaves you out to dry. Please don't do that.

    There was one race I did (Rookie SS at Charlotte) where I ended up playing ping pong between the car behind me and in front of me. Made contact about 4 or 5 times from the beginning of the third straight on the front stretch and the entrance to turn 1. Don't remember how that ended and since I purged the game from my channel (and my computer). I just remember that I only noticed one bump while actually driving and the other bumps when making the video. I suppose a good addition to the video would be to know where the extents of your car are, but some may argue that that comes with experience.

    If I am a lap car I’ll let you go by. You just have to let me know where you are. Let me know where you are going and what side of the race track you are on. However usually I’m in the top ten or top five. Frequently battling up front. 9/10 times I’ll get a top 5. I need to get my statistics up to 9/10 winning the race.

    Question re: short oval racing:
    Is it fair or ‘blocking’ to come down from the outside to the apex when there’s a car showing it wants the inside lane but they have no overlap? Obviously it’s the fastest way around the track but I’m risking them diving during turn-in and we crash/I’m dead.
    But if I take the inside lane to defend before turn-in, we both take the corner very slow and I’m likely getting dumped anyways. How do you defend in short ovals without someone just telling themselves you’re a blocker and dumping you?

    I hate when you're coming up on lapped cars and they race/block you like they're going for the win. Especially when a lapped car causes a wreck for the same reasons

      My favorite is 15th place 5 laps down riding close as fuck to the lead pack on the outside, refusing to lift and tuck in behind them, until they inevitably ride too close and spin the leader out, wrecking the whole pack in the process. Every fucking race at draft masters.

    If I’m slower traffic, i will yield to faster cars. On the flip side, if i am the faster car, and you are preventing me from pressing forward, i will move you if you do not move yourself.

    Forcing your opponent to the slowest part of the track or making them run wide is acceptable in oval racing. Thats literally the point. On road courses and ovals lol. Just dont do it every lap just to be a D lol. Dont wreck both cars defending a spot on lap 5 of 50 lol.

    racing under apron is legal only on the last lap both iracing and irl as far as i know and there's blocking and defending and defending to the apron is fine blocking is not in any way of it. And you're in right to not give space to anyone below apron to go back on track. It's basically they concern to rejoin safely cause it's considered as an offtrack surface. But remember it will be better for both of you to finish the race than retire after misunderstanding or something even if you was right (same in road races and other races). I actually think that what you called an "acceptable blocking" was a defending.

    once they fix tire wear this wont be a problem. having people constantly shoving themselves around will just wear the tires down and they will fail. iracing isn't great at moderating their protests but they will be easier when the guy blocking to the yellow line is a half second slower a lap and maybe the guy a half second slower realizes its not a good play anymore.

    Online simracers often act like they are holier than the pope.
    Ovals are not my thing in simracing. Recently did an hour race on Daytona but I get really bored half way.

      Yeah, isn't the rule that you can attempt to pass on the apron but it's your responsibility to move back up safely before the corner?
      Forcing a car overtaking on the front stretch apron to stay there into turn 1 is bad etiquette to say the least but by the letter of the rules it's allowed.
      (This applies to oval racing, it has been established that using the apron in the corners to gain an advantage on rovals is forbidden)
