I never thought I'd be grateful to put up with another year and a half of Sheoldred, but if she keeps Obliterator out of Standard, then she can stay! :P
I've found the old one in my collection, it is just the same as this one except it doesn't have the phyrexian creature type, is it still viable as a "phyrexian" if I play the old card?
Late watching this, I just got into mtg arena and played tabletop when obliterator first came in. I run ayaras oathsworn, gwenna, the flying deathtouch 1/2 vampire assassin, 8 fight spells, 7 kill spells, and 2 archfiend of shadows. It runs pretty well. Ayaras hits 6/6, look for an obliterator. Archfiend brings obliterator back from graveyard or backup 1 on obliterator. It's been pretty fun and I'm seeing if I could hit mythic with it.
Sheoldred the Apocalypse absolutely slaps. I play 4 of her and two obliterators as the top end of a mono black aggro deck. Obliterator gets dealt with a lot of the time, but it's very powerful against mono red, and surprisingly good against mono white.
This card is close to my heart and I love hearing your take on all things MTG. I also will be jamming this into standard and explorer regardless of its power level.
Other notable answers to obliterator: might stone and weakstone karn sylex are colorless options in the izzet artifact deck. City devestator also in that deck which had gained some popularity. Urza meld walker if you want to play the jeskai version
I just got back into Magic during Dominaria United. It's not surprising that there is a weak color in standard, but it is wild how much weaker it is considering there are multiple T1 decks in mono white & black. And Mono red & blue are not far behind them. I dig a lot of green cards in standard, it's just hard to justify them outside of 3 color decks in most cases.
I don't understand why Wizards hates green so much. Green is the only mono color that hasn't been viable for *years*, and then they print cards like this making it even worse. The fact that green still doesn't have non-creature-based removal or a board wipe is insane to me, and they completely invalidated all green's big creatures with this card. I quit two years ago because the state of green was so bad only to come back now and find it even worse.
I've always chuckled when I throw out obliterater in play. I've played against alot of people on arenas. And alot of them conceded some face it on. I mean obliterater is a awesome card I have a standard with 4 obliterater and a ria ivor, along with toxics cards. Idk how many time I've clutched a game with just 1 life left. I've played halfmanhalfPanda and clutched. He had control, till my obliterater came in play. I was back to back with obliterater with game at me - lp 1 panda - lp 33 I attack with one leave one for defense until I wiped his hand and his cards, along with annihilation glare and card murder he was done. 33 to 0 in 4 turn with 1 lp left
I feel like the obliterator coming back is going to be a build around card and be its own house on the board. Obliterator Domain, that's what I plan on building.
Correct me if im wrong. If my opponent let say he has a 10/5 creature attacks my phyrexian obliterator 5/5, he has to sacrifice 10 permenants

2:20 Just Infernal Grasp or Go for the Throat or any exile removal and no Obliterator.
