- Kelly Slater and Rob Machado's high five at Pipeline while competing for a world title in 1995 is one of the most significant moments in surfing history. It was an intersection that informed the trajectory of two of surfing's greatest athletes - ultimately pushing Rob Machado to become arguably the greatest freesurfer in modern surfing and Kelly Slater to become the greatest competitive surfer of all time. Rob changed my life as far as surfing. As a kid and fan of stylish surfing it was Lopez, richards curren. Then growing up in Cardiff I got to watch Rob and his flow. Smooth lines and soul with subtle movements instead of constant aggressive bashing and forced turns that consume 99% of the lineup. At 17 I found my love for longboarding because very few shortboarders surfed with any grace or style, just the same snap snap snap. Boring to me. Good longbarders seemed to understand the blend of board and wave like Rob. Luckily there's been new generations of surfers who truly make beautiful art on various mid-lengths and logs

Rob Machado is a legend such powerful energy and kind spirit 🌞
Soul surfing is what it's really about, not just a sport, with a bunch of alpha dogs trying to be number 1 like all the other sports around, surfing is more than that because the waves are so much more and no one has expressed that better than Rob throughout his career from then until now.

I’m a goofy that started surfing a little over a year ago and I’d have to disagree, I’m pretty smooth…at falling on my ass and going over the falls
Don't put yourself down, keep working at it.
Not as smooth as Rob in my opinion because Occy is stronger and more of a power surfer.
I think Rob is more fluid because he's lighter. I would say Occy more of a power surfer that throws buckets of water off the lip with his snaps!
I don't see a problem if two childhood buddies "high five "in competion.
Cold, calculated move by Kelly to disrupt his line and establish priority on the coming waves. Ultimately won him the heat. No way Kelly would've been okay with losing to Rob over the hi-5 had it gone the other way.
There's not enough acknowledgment of how Kelly was claiming for rob before the high five. That gesture alone showed that his thoughts were about enjoying the moment instead of getting back out into priority. Don't think I've ever seen a heat where a competitor just stops and throws both arms into the air to celebrate a rivals ride.

also, rob could have easily kicked out earlier but decides on the cutback. that was the key moment.
@@dylanrobertson5010 yeah no one ever talks about that. Also, the high five took like maybe .5 seconds out of Rob's line. I think regardless Rob was just enjoying the wave and celebrated with kelly
Exactly you would have to be such a player hater to accuse Kelly of intentionally sabotaging him while Rob was inside the barrel and he's cheering for his friend.

There are no Hi 5's in Surfing!! I've seen Pipeline in person when it's perfect and it's awesome!! The beach is really narrow. Quicksilver house is right there.
The harsh reality is that kelly mentioned that andy said he wouldve ran kelly over, and so did sunny, but just look where those 2 are now...

Kelly Rob 2 totally different people Kelly wanted the world Rob didn't give a fuck.As far as there surfing kelly is amazing still 2 this minute. could win another world title maybe with a bit of luck.Rob's on the best path i think no pressure. as far as there style Rob the smoothest most controlled surfer ever kelly will never match Robs perfect timing so smooth pleasing 2 watch actually if you watch him closely its amazing the guys a freak and his boards he's pumping out are the best all round shapes going.

Kelly was cheering him with both arms sky high while Rob was still in the barrel. I'm sorry, but they both got caught up in the moment, and Rob came up short. Not buying the whole Gerry Lopez/Garcia impression either.. never did. Sorry. He's a great goofy footer but living in denial.
