Slater has had a lot of rivals over the years, but his match ups with Rob were always some of my favorites. Machado brought such great style to the tour.
To the people confused why Rob lost: even though Rob made more waves, he never went backside, his drops weren't as critical and he never got as deep, plus Kelly chose bigger waves overall.
And Kelly played mind games on Rob and it worked. Many observers confirmed Kelly initiated the hand five, tricking Rob in confusion enough to make him loose priority. A lot of professionals and close friends from Rob said people often see him as a cool surfer while he was a fierce competitor. If Kelly managed to trick Rob, it's a huge performance. The World Title was at stake. The audience did not see Rob the extreme competitive nature of Rob because of his cool style. The competitive aspect of Kelly was easy to see. The hang five was perceived as a cool move from Rob and it was a move from Slater advantaging Slater. So who knows if it was a mind game or an authentic friendly move ? Maybe a bit of both ? It's clear that Slater's backside attack with late drops, slip and grabrails gave him the higher ground in the contest. Rob despite an incredible flow in deep tubes, did not push the technique to the limits as Slater did. This heat was just historical.
Concordo amigo. Eu ando de skate e gosto muito do esporte, mas quando surfo só fico na linha, e antes da queda só assisto esses vídeos antigos, os novos são só os cara girando no ar.
It’s funny that slater gets all the credit for breaking off the big board thing. Matt Archbold was asking tpatterson to shape him small boards for Hawaii in the 90s!
when ever you see video of slater with hair you know its old video. shit remember slater on baywatch and he was fucking pamela anderson that was old school shit
@@arloharnish well, even today a knockkneed stinkbugged flailing brazilian will score higher than someone surfing at a higher level, but smoother. the judges seem to think if you are out of control you must be good. they dont recognize superior ability and style.
The commentator called pipe THE FRONTDOOR.. Who hired that guy🤣
😂😂😂
That was funny 😂

Wow the boards of the 90s
Loooks so hard 🤯🔥
As a non surfer, whats wrong with em?
@@morkusmorkus6040 they areeee bigger... you neeed a lot of flow and styleeee😰🤯🔥
@@moisessoto1492 Aha. Cool. Thanks

Long pointy boards!
Kelly's board is an Al Merrick. Simply the best..
Machado actually won that heat!
Kelly was already the GOAT back then. It’s hard to believe he kept going and is still settling the bar.
There will never be another crowd like that again. It was fun.
How have I only just found your You tube 😃🙌❤️
Machado underscored !!
Proof the '90s were better!
Kelly has hair 😂

Yeah, Kelly was owning the place.

Altos tubos . Eu gosto bastante do surf sem esses saltos de estilo skate de hoje em dia. Thank for vídeo Man ! 🇧🇷✌🏼

In 1998 Kelly already had 5 World Championships (on the way to the 6° at that year)
Amazingggg
This was not a contest. This was a barrel fest !

Give that announcer a beer
why? to help bring him down from all the coke?

Kelly Slater + Al Merrick = you lose.
Did anyone else hear "deep throater"? That was strange. It was also strange to me that Rob Machado didn't win.
he got smaller waves and didnt get as deep for as long. it made sense that he wouldnt win with that strategy. why is it strange that he didnt win?
@@xisotopex I don't know. I think Machado was smoother. But backdoor looks faster and steeper, so you're probably right.
