  • Students today have inherited substantial social, financial, and mental health stressors, and educational institutions have inherited the responsibility of changing the system to build a better future. As we prepare students to become engaged, successful contributors to a rapidly changing, global community, I believe it is time to shift the paradigm of education: Reimagine, redefine and rebuild higher education. In order to support students, fulfill the mission of educational institutions, and develop the future leaders of our world, we must also reimagine what it means to educate them: Reimagine universities that holistically support students, invest in mental health services, deliver innovative curricula, prioritize student well being, foster diverse communities, ensure equity, and cultivate curiosity. Dr. Goodman is an educator, occupational therapist, yoga teacher and dancer in Chicago. She developed and teaches "Promoting Wellbeing", a credit-bearing course at the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) that aims to support wellness and academic success for college students. She also teaches a course which explores the intersection of sexuality and health. In addition to curriculum development and teaching, Leah serves as faculty advisor for the Mental Health and Disability Alliance, mentors students as an Honors College Fellow, sits on the Chancellor’s Committee on the Status of Persons with Disabilities, is a faculty fellow for the Office of Diversity Inclusive Classroom Initiative, and continues to advocate for comprehensive student services. Leah is interested in exploring the ways we define and provide student support, and seeks to develop initiatives that promote well being, inclusion, health, equity, and student success. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

My university, the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire, teaches many of these skills. Go there. Learn. Live

No today it is Learner driven. Who wrote curriculum requirements? In higher ed, the curriculum committees, who were previous students.

Right but the SLO's and requirements are set by the state. If only it were learner driven.

I don't need to learn the things you listed. I need to learn differential calculus and, just for fun, how to read Latin.
