    An field ecology classmate and I did that after doing two nights on GMC's Long Trail, northern section. We caved after hiking along the ridges and took the Cog down.

    My wife and I hiked this trail November 12th 2019 and nearly died. It was during a winter storm that we didn't known was coming. We made it about half way between the sign that says "Welcome to the alpine zone" and the Lake of Clouds Hut. At this point, it was just too cold to go on and the higher we got the colder it got. Our water was frozen and we hadn't eaten since we left our hotel. We had food with us but It was too cold to stop moving to eat. We made the decision to turn back the way we came. I can't tell you how many times we slid going down. When we got back to the car, the temperature was 5 degrees which felt comfortable compared to what it was up on the mountain. The next day I found out it was -52 degrees with the wind chill factor on the summit. I had never felt that kind of cold in my life. We will try it again in nicer weather.

      Glad you both survived! Smart decision to turnaround.
      Weather can be dangerous any time of the year. We always stay 4-5 days and choose best weather day to summit. Did the Presidential Traverse and got caught in rain, sleet, snow and wind; not fun at all. Good luck on your next attempt.

    That's the shortest trail to the summit that I'm aware of. The one way ticket was $51 each and has to be purchased on the summit but availability isn't guaranteed, so be ready to hike down. Enjoy your hike!

    One of my favorite trails in all of the whites. Great shot of the storms rolling in. Thank goodness for the cog, you guys would have had a long way to go above tree line, just to get to trees. Check out the story of William Curtis and Allan Ormsbee, very reminiscent of the storms you caught.

    Hi Paul and Tracy! Nice video, thanks! My rockpile hike was also via the Ammonoosuc, and what a great trail that is! But I made a very big mistake, one that a more experienced hiker would have avoided- I went on 6/3/18, which was a Sunday. I reached the summit around 2:00pm, and was met by a Woodstock-sized crowd! (Incidentally, while on the summit, I was completely unaware that as I was standing there, SAR people were in the process of trying to reach two stranded hikers below. Thankfully, hikers and rescue personnel were all OK) Saw very few backpacks, so the big majority of folks were auto road and railway "summiteers" (in quotations, because they aren't, really!). And, to be honest, I wasn't that impressed with the big guy, anyway. Great views, to be sure, but I much preferred Monroe. Small summit area, few people, that's my type of hike! I'm now halfway through my 4000's; #24 was Jackson yesterday. Favorite summit so far? Bondcliff. If you two haven't done that one yet, I highly recommend it. Bit of a hike coming from Lincoln Woods, but well worth the mileage. Happy Hiking!

      I totally agree about the summit of Monroe..... my kind of summit also. I just thought that mt Washington was a big parking lot with a cafeteria. Great views but, too many people.

    Love the video and your hike up Mt. Washington. I will be hiking this early June, 2020. Don't know if I'll take take the Tuckerman's Ravine trail or Ammonoosuc. Just curious, do you have to be a member of the AMC to go into the Lake of the Clouds hut? And why did you choose this route over Tuckerman's Ravine?

    • @thepaul01011
      @thepaul01011  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Scott. No, you don't have to be a AMC member to enter the hut. Members get a better rate if you decide to stay there. We chose the Ammonoosuc trail because we hiked Tuckerman's trail in 2013 and wanted to experience ascending a different trail.

      , If you had one trail to hike Mt. Washington like me this June, which would you choose and why?

      @@scottverba1875 Tuckerman's Ravine trail is my favorite for a couple reasons. The views are awesome and you're not quite as exposed to the wind compared to the Ammonoosuc trail. A few sections were steep and wet on Tuck so we decided to descend using Lions Head trail, eventually linking back up with Tuck. Not sure what the trail conditions are like in June but def check before deciding which trail is best for you. Good luck and stay safe. Keep an eye on the weather, it can get crazy!

    Very nice video. Thanks. At times it looked like you were searching for the trail. Was it well marked? I didn't see any trail markings like white or blue paint marks. What made you decide to go up Ammonoosuc instead of Tuckerman?

    • @thepaul01011
      @thepaul01011  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you. Trail was easy to follow but there were a few crossings that were tough due to all the downed trees. We chose Ammonoosuc because we ascended Tuckermans Ravine trail in 2013 and have done the north and south approaches to Mt Washington. Can't get enough of this mountain!!

    What's with the piano music? I've been up there three times and I"ve never heard a piano. I heard the WATER, the little falls, the babbling brook. I sure would like to hear it again. This is not real!
