    Hi, my great grandpa helped to build the dam. Unfortunately he and a couple other men fell off a scaffolding and were killed, as safety was a bit of an afterthought back then. My father was 6 when he lost his dad. He and his two bothers and mother had to move in with relatives to try to survive during the Great Depression. My dad tried to tell me the stories of their survival but it was too painful to listen too and I would stop him. I hated to hear about how he suffered. I do wish I would have let him tell me. It was just so painful to hear how awful his childhood was, especially how scarce food was. It just breaks my heart.

      A very touching story - I have visited the dam more than once and see it as a great civil engineering achievement of that generation, who underwent untold deprivation, not at all like the USA of Hollywood.

    I was born and raised in Las Vegas, Nevada and you could not have said it better. Nicely done! As a side note some of us prefer to call it the dam by its original name, Boulder Dam.

  • @joelyons886
    @joelyons886 6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

    I remember visiting the Dam on my Honeymoon we flew over it first in a helicopter and it looked "small" mind you the Grand Canyon is massive only did we realize how big the Hoover was till we drove to it and realized the sheer enormity of it from ground level; the round cylindrical buildings are over 20 stories ABOVE water level! Also, the tour is amazing and one to definitely add to the bucket list if you ever find yourself in Vegas or in Colorado. One interesting fact mentioned on the tour is that this was not the initial location for the Dam but finances dictated it be located here...

    • @devinheida8694

      Joe Lyons where was the original plan?

    • @joelyons886
      @joelyons886 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Devin Heida
      “Hoover Dam” or “Boulder Dam” was originally named Boulder Dam. That’s because the initially planned site was at Boulder Canyon about 10 miles north upriver from where it is now located at Black Canyon. An engineering reassessment moved the location from Boulder Canyon to its present location. Apparently, finance and communication network (roads etc) meant the cost was too prohibitive even though it was way more suited to that location...

    OMG ..what a beautiful well done amazing job!!! I was there in 2000 and it still takes my breath away... unbelievable when everything was so difficult to built because they did not have so much of the power tools like today..so much work and so much heat because Arizona and Nevada is so hot in the summer and so cold in the wintertime..hard hard labor..poor people ..And done to perfection.Until today its still standing strong. Great strong Heroes!!! They sure have a special place in heaven.Today's roads and streets are a mess, today they use asphalt instead of concrete..Lol and it takes them years to only patch the pot holes....

    My wife and I visited in 1993 and did the whole tour including the Lake Mead boat ramps and piers (A LOT more water then than now).
    They had redone the visitor center and the tour was amazing. Huge inside, a literal cathedral to turbines,
    everything was so clean one could "eat off" the floor.
    We even went down to the bottom on the river exiting side to see the water gush out. Quite a roar of water.

    Probably the classiest project the B1M ever undertook.
    The look of the area, with stone walls on the cliffs held
    in place over the roads with vintage heavy chains. The
    awesome art-deco style of the overall architecture, the
    quality of the craftsmanship and the quality of the
    concrete itself, still hard and smooth from the day.
    And the brute size of this idea - what were they thinking?
    It cannot be made today in America.
    The generation needed just doesn't exist anymore.

      No one really starved during the depression. One of the first times in history - most economic collapses in prior centuries (including 19th) were due to famine, and if not, it was something that affected only the rich.

    The reason this is such a famous US infrastructure project is because the US has stopped investing in projects benefiting the people.

    • @Sovereign_Citizen_LEO
      @Sovereign_Citizen_LEO 6 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      That's not really even true. It's just that our nation and infrastructure needs are already long since built. What makes this one of the most famous infrastructure projects is because it was a world first (first of it's kind), and is still unique in the world (even though there are much larger dams now). The U.S. still builds all kinds of infrastructure projects benefiting the people, but most are just not as large scale. Meanwhile in countries like China, they are building the projects they need (and have not yet built), to support their national transition/industrial revolution/growing urban areas. There is close to a $Trillion dollars in roadway/freeway/bridges, light rail, subway, high speed rail, airport terminals, and other infrastructure projects either under construction, or in the planning phases in the United States right now.
