  • A documentary by Oliver Schwabe
The film Bad Woman Blues - Beth Hart celebrates the music and voice of a woman who enriches rock and blues with emotion, authenticity and honesty. Beth Hart inspires and surprises again and again with her unmistakable stage presence and her rousing concerts.
For Beth Hart, there is no separation between art and life. On the contrary: one cannot exist without the other. Beth Hart uses music to fight the ghosts of the past. She encountered alcohol and drugs as a teenager and was later diagnosed with a mental illness. The blues singer looked into deep abysses in her youth and early adulthood. These experiences flow into her art and make her music intense and her concerts unique. An almost spiritual experience - both for the audience and for Beth Hart herself.
Oliver Schwabe's film accompanies the musician on the tour bus, doing yoga on stage before the soundcheck and backstage shortly before her performances. The filming locations are large halls and small clubs on the beach in Los Angeles. Beth Hart lets us look over her shoulder in the studio and talks about her way of working, her setbacks and also about her bipolar disorder, which dominates her life but which she now has under control.
Companions such as her long-time manager Dave Wolff and guitar hero Slash talk about the exceptional artist, whose fan base has been growing steadily for over 30 years. Beth Hart's extraordinary career shows that it is worth staying true to yourself, trusting your own talent and not following every fashion. She is an artist who knows how to take the broad-leggedness out of rock and instead express herself in a soulful and stirring way in very personal songs. And with a voice that is second to none.

@@twhittaker66 both Janis and Beth lay out their heart and soul through music. Janis got up there on stage and showed it can be done. Janis sadly is gone but lives on through her music and style of expression. Janis opened the door, Beth walked through it and shows the world that it is perfectly fine to share that deep felt emotion. Had Janis not passed at such a young age her voice would have become more refined just as Beth's voice has become. Both women have had their struggles in life. Struggles that show in their music. They are both unique yet similar. They both touch my soul. There should be no competition in music, only appreciation. Music is art not a sport. I have seen Beth up close at her performances in Hollywood, California. She is an amazing performer and an incredible person. She engages with her audience because she appreciates they came to watch her and her band perform. She will look into as many eyes making a connection with each person as she possibly can. I lit her cigarette. She is even a better human than a singer. That is saying a lot.

@@twhittaker66That's a bit harsh! Joplin was a trailblazer, and Hart stands on her shoulders. Having said that...Hart has skills and range that Joplin (and most vocalists) lack!

@@twhittaker66 It's not only a harsh 'opinion", it's factually incorrect. While Joplin generally delivered in a rough, bluesy style, she certainly COULD sing. "Me and Bobby McGee" and the intro to "Piece of My Heart" being two examples of a mellower delivery of which she was capable.
When you're stating an "opinion" about a icon of a genre, you might want to stick to facts!

Everything she puts out is amazing (understand that she is very eclectic). It's even worth getting her very first, self-produced album (Beth Hart and the Ocean of Souls) from 1993 which she never discusses. There are a couple of good songs on it, and really bad ones, but it was her first effort to publish at age 20--she sang a lot of these on Star Search in 1993. For her live albums, always get the DVD's.

Beth Hart makes me feel alive again! Her music makes me feel good! The way she brings that music out from deep down in her soul is a sight to hear, feel, and see. After I wrecked my motorcycle 5 and a half years ago, I didn't know what to do. It left me paralyzed from the mid chest down, and 4 years later they took off both of my legs. I faked life for a while. I stayed positive most of the time for the people around me and sometimes a tiny part of that was to keep what I had left going. During most of this time I stopped listening to music. I couldn't dance, I couldn't sing, I couldn't do life. My pain to this day keeps me in this miserable bed. I still try to have some type of faith and hope that God will at least take away this pain. About a year ago I discovered Beth Hart while I was starting to listen to a Lil bit of blues on TH-cam and I stopped the voices in my head and I spent about a week getting to know her and a little of what she's about and I fell in love with it all!! I love her voice, and I love that she doesn't care what anyone thinks about how she does life. What you see is what you get. I still stop when I hear her music and I really listen to it all even though I still haven't completely connected back to life yet, but I keep trying a little at a time. So thank you for your music, thank you for your story that you so openly share and thank you God for her beautiful soul.

"One of the things where I'm lucky as an artist is that I never became a star. So what's great about not being a star is that you can do your own thing, you do your own music, you dress how you want, you don't have to deal with paparazzi, you don't have to deal with blacked out cars, you don't have to deal with security, you don't have to deal with that and you still get to do what everybody else does, you get to do the dream of traveling and making music, but you have anonymity and you have more freedom."

I came to Beth's music late, well, sort of. I watched her on Star Search. Back then we didn't have the internet, and computers at our fingertips, at all times. So, I never knew what happened to her. Over a decade later, someone I went to school with, and was in pep band with, played on one of her records...Then she played on a live music radio show that goes all over the world, called Mountain Stage. This was the first time seeing her live, and I honestly HATE that, because I have missed so many shows...Eventhough Mountain Stage, you only get 3-5 songs, there are usually several guests, my mind was BLOWN. She ended the set with "Leave the Light On" and I had tears streaming down my face. I know the song reflects something in her life, but I swear, it felt like she was inside my head, esp with the age 17 and 21...I have seen Beth live since. Last show was in Cin Oh, at the Taft Theater, where they gave her a strict time limit. She had been playing over 20 songs per show, until OH, we got 12. While I was super pissed, I was also super blown away. There has only been one artist that before seeing live I loved, but after, they were in my soul, and that was Heart. Hearing Ann Wilson was so powerful, and the harminizing with Nancy...WTF! Beth Hart was the only other artist that I saw live, and had to have everything she had ever recorded, and now, watch her for hours on TH-cam. That passion, that is something that can not be faked. I have told EVERYONE to listen to BEth. I post her songs on social media all the time. I tell friends..."If robert Plant and Janis Joplin had a baby...It would be Beth Hart!
I have so much respect for her as an artist, but also so much for her honesty about addiction and mental health. 7 years ago we buried my little cousin, who would never seek help for mental illness, she was clean for a while, but when she hit a rough patch, it was too hard to come out. I have another cousin who is bipolar, and it's a battle to keep her on her meds. I lost a brother to addiction...and me, I suffer from chronic depression. People who NEVER suffer from mental illness can really not understand. My ENTIRE life, my mom, who was a nurse before I came along, told me to "just put a smile on your face and get the fuck over it." Even when my daughter graduated college with a psych degree, mom thought depression could be turned on and off like the car radio. She dies 2 months ago. I have been listening to a lot of Beth. Sometimes to cry, sometimes to disapear, sometimes to rock.
I fucking love that she does yoga to Pantera. I have been told by many theropists to meditate. That is not my thing. I have tried. The way I meditate is music. Depending on what is going on in that moment depends on the music, Beth, Janis, Ozzy, Disturbed, Buddy Guy...That's how I make it through life. I listen to her and then hear who is on the radio, thinking 90% do not deserve the fame, because they use a gimic, not soul...in my eyes, Beth is a superstar. Her music is in my soul.
Thoughts are with Beth, and she takes time to heal. Holding tickets for OH...No matter how many times its postponed, even if its canceled. PLEASE be well, Beth Hart. You have made my life better. I will wait until you are better...

I was at live concert of Beth in Kyiv, Ukraine. I never forget what an incredible energy came out from Beth when she's singing. Now when I'm down in the dumps I listen to "Bad woman blues" and get back on the track. Thank you so much, Beth for your music, it's uric and fucking great! That's what real talents do instead of jumping to the bandwagon. They create through their soul and they sign through their hart.

Been a fan since 2010 and a friend played her music for me. Then later I met another musician because I was looking at her bio and she listed her influences as Beth, Zeppelin and Bonnie Raitt.
Finally got to catch Beth live in New Orleans a year ago. I don't know if it was part of the setlist, but during a pause I shouted out, "Bad Woman Blues". She laughed and looked over and asked John, "Can we do that?" He said, 'Yeah', so they did. Best thing was I'd gotten front row seats for my friend and she'd recently started performing it on her solo shows for me. It was awesome!

Love the documentary, especially without the German dubbing, but Oliver Schwabe definitely wanted to emphasize the "bad ass" aspect of Beth's personality, and not her more vulnerable and humble side. It's like her musical evolution is stopped at 2010. There's no focus on the Blues and no mention of Bonamassa. Like I said, it's Beth's more hard rocker years 1996-2007. (Concert footage used is from Rockpalast 1999 and Rockpalast 2006). Also MIA is practically any mention of Scott, but that is probably because he wanted it that way. Still, great to see another, well-done documentary.

I've been a fan from the first day I heard her perform. I can thank Joe Bonamassa for that. She was a guest singer on his Beacon Theatre DVD about 10 years ago. I was floored by her performance and within a week I bought everything I could find that she recorded and haven't missed anything since. I'’ve become obsessed with her music. I never miss a chance to see her live whenever she's within a few hundred miles of me. My wife and I even traveled to London to see her 2018 concert in the Royal Albert Hall. I’m hoping she takes care of herself and slows down her frantic concert schedules in the future. Hear that David..
