    I have my Grandma's hoya house plant that is about 80 years old. It gets the most unbelievable flowers in early spring that give off an unusual scent that fills the house. The flowers drip a sticky substance so when the flowers begin to bloom I cover the floor underneath with a pretty doily. Then just wash the doily when blooming is finished and the petals have dropped. When the plant gets a little too big, I take cuttings just as you do and root them in WATER. Just water from the tap. It takes a week or two, but soon you will see roots. Let the roots grow a little, then plant in a mixture like yours. I have been doing this for over 40 years with no problem. I have several large hoyas that send out their tendrils and climb up my windows, wind around whatever they can and provide me with yearly enchantment.

    Most-often, the reason "leaf cuttings" don't work is because the cuts are usually made on the petiole (the leaf "stem" that attaches to the long, ever-growing "vine stem"). Unfortunately, for these cases, meristematic tissue is found in abundance in the "vine stem" tissue and not in the petiole nor in the leaf itself. So, while leaf cuttings may occasionally grow roots, there often-times isn't enough meristematic tissue to give rise to new leaves.
    So, best advice for those who wish to take and start "leaf cuttings" to eventually grow new plants, make cuts on the "vine stem" so that a piece of it is still attached to the petiole. Allow this to callus over for a few days and then, plant in a free-draining substrate/soil. Keep out of direct sun and water as needed, never allowing the substrate/soil to remain too wet nor to become bone dry. In 4 - 6 weeks, new growth will begin to show, usually emerging from the substrate/soil.
    (This method works very well for me when cuttings are taken in late Spring thru Summer... when the soil is warm.)
    Hope this info helps you and your viewers!!

    You're so right about wanting more. I've caught the hoyafever when I got a tricolored hoya. Shortly after I got a little cutting of a Hoya 'Lisa', and now I've ordered a regular hoya.

    I inherited my grandmother's Hoya, propagated from a barber shop window on Garrard Ave in Toronto, in 1955. I'll be trying the layering with a 3' (foot) flowering vine.

      This worked well by the way... I haven't severed it from the mother plant yet. It's been blooming for over 2 months now.

    I purchased a queen on etsy that turned out to be a leaf propagated plant. I am only just now realizing this after seeing your leaf cuttings. She has grown a new leaf but she lost her tendril. Not sure what to expect from here but, I'm proceeding cautiously with great patience. Thanks for the great information.

    I grow mine in a tiny glass candle holder. 5 Hoya leaves and 5 ZZ plants. I just try to change the water every twice a week. In about a month I started to see roots. The ZZ plants eventually grow little bulbs, but it took longer :)

    Thanks. Now I know not to try it by seed nor leaf cutting. I bought a damaged Dischidia Casade from Wal*Mart, and they root well from stems.
    The plant was completely root damaged and leaves were sunburned from direct light.
    I took the stronger branches, that rotted off, to plant in another pot. The remaining plants were too fragile and damaged, so I pressed dry potting soil upon where I thought the strongest stems remained, and lost over have the plants, but those that survived, are pretty ... aggressive. I'm happy :)
    Thanks for the video, thanks for the advice :)

    Does the time of year affect the ability and speed to propagate? I live in New Jersey and Summer is coming to an end. Is this a bad time to start propagating?

    • @strawberrytart5666
      @strawberrytart5666 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I live in RI and noticed it's not a good time to propagate in the cold months. In the Spring start rooting, once you get them in dirt after rooting put them in a sunny but not burn sunny spot. They do like the warmth. It takes a while to see new shoots coming out of the dirt. I like these plants because they are slow growing. The variegated leaf one is rare. I have a good size Mother plant I propagate from. It will take 3 years at least before they are of decent size to give away or sell.
