Your carnosa is so tiny! It's precious. That was my first hoya, about 20+ years ago. I have so much of the stuff I can't give it away. 4 pots super bushy about 6' long. The longest it ever got was 15 feet. I've pruned my hoyas but I stick them in soil with the air roots intact. When they start to show buds, I know they are growing. Also you know they do well because the leaves aren't wilting or shriveling.

THANK YOU! You are brilliant, delightful & informative! In 1984 (39 years ago), I took cuttings from a dear friend's 2nd generation Hoya that she started from her mother's. 💖 Not only is mine still alive, it has produced healthy 3rd & 4th generations from that very plant! 🌿🌿🌿🌿 It's time to try for a 5th! 🌱🌿 Wish me luck! 🍀🤞🙏

@UCRjGbWm25MaUd3VLuJpPtYg well there is no right or wrong really, from my research on this series, one thing I learnt for sure is that every language evolves, especially a semi dead language such as Latin (semi because Italian are super similar). In fact the word pedicel derives from the latin diminutive form of the word pedem, which in turn derived from the ancient greek word pous or podi (in modern greek), which means little foot!! 😄 Gaaah both my latin and ancient greek teachers would laugh so hard at me right now, lol!!!!!! 😂
oh how I love you Betsy Begonia! This video was very informative and hilarious!!! I think I just might prune one of my hoyas this weekend! And also, I love the word peduncle. :)
I love your videos, you're so comical! I have over 60 house plants but no hoya, soooo i'm going to go out and get started looking for hoya to add to my home! I'm so excited!
Very cool use of foil as a cutting support. I will try that next time. I recently ordered 4 hoya carnosa plants 2 months ago to give them a go for the first time, and sadly some arrived with miner damage one with a broken stem and some leaves that came lose with just little nubs of there stems still with the leaf. So I placed them all together in some water as I figured why not. Well I guess I was lucky because all but one of the leaves now has roots and are now potted in my grow mix. I was amazed as I didn't thank the single leaves would have rooted but they seemed to root faster then the stem piece. Amazing little plants these Hoya's!
Thank you for the tutorial, my Hoya was taking over my living room. It was already a mature plant, when I got it some 40 years ago, and it is just a monster. I'm going to go snippety snip on it, and then all my friends can have Hoyas too ☺♥

Only subscribed to you recently and loving your videos. I have always enjoyed having plants around my house but recently I got interested in Calathea, Alocasia etc etc and after watching your videos I now have my first Hoya which is a Hoya Bella. It has many vines and there are gorgeous flowers on one of them just now. The vines are all pretty long so I was thinking of taking cuttings and doing the same thing by rooting them and replanting them back into the same pot so your video was very helpful and timely for me. Thank you Avril
Thank you from a newbie Hoya carnosa plant mummy. I just received a rooted cutting that I purchased online and planted it today but now have a better understanding of the growth pattern thanks to you 💚
I've watched several videos on rooting and starting new Hoyas, but yours was much clearer than the others and gave me the nerve to move forward with my transplants. I inherited my plant from my mother who passed away and I had no idea how to care for it. It only produced a few flowers and then nothing more. It put out a second long shoot, but it ended up turning woody. What makes them do that? Would it be best to just cut it off? Should I transfer the plant to a larger pot with fresh soil? Some videos tell you to leave your plant root bound and be careful not to disturb the roots if you do move it to a larger pot. You didn't seem to think that was an issue at all. Really enjoyed your video and liked your straight-forward attitude. You definitely have a green thumb! Thanks for any help you could give me.
Yes! This was super informative. I clicked on bcause i wanted to do the very thing to my hoya, but never knew how. Like u said, there's a lot of misinformation on the internet. You showed me exactly where to cut n how best to root, and i thank u. (Sry 4 misspelling some words there, haha). You're a good teacher.
OMG I feel like everything I ever did with my cuttings was wrong. Haha. I got about 6 cuttings from a neighbor. So far, only one has rooted. So I re-cut a few of them but when I did, I put the node in the water. Ugh. I may have to re-cut again. At least I have one that I know worked. One is better than none!
This can be okay. Roots can come from the node as well. I have a Hoya carnosa cutting that I'm rooting in water. I twas submerged all the way up to the leaf and a root came out of the node where the leaf is growing.
@@betsybegonia Aww that makes me feel better! This hoya business is rough. I didn't even know they existed until about 6 months ago thanks to TH-cam! What's done is done! Now I am obsessed. :-)
Hi Betsy! Huge fan. Your channel’s been a huge stress reliever for me. I love “watching” your videos at work while I’m doing mindless data entry. I have a question unrelated to this particular video! I am currently living in NW Indiana with a collection of about 10 plants or so. I plan on moving across the country to the west coast not long from now and would love some tips on traveling with houseplants or if that’s something that’s even possible! Did you travel to Europe completely void of plants? What do you plan on doing with your plants if you move? Thank you so much in advance!
I didn't bring any plants to Europe, I only had one and gave it to a friend. We moved last year and I just packed my plants in a box to prevent them from jiggling around, put them in the truck, and went.
Thanks for the video, I beheaded my huge Hoya carnosa before I saw your channel, was my first time & didn’t know what I was doing, cut it all the way done & got 50 cuttings, thanks for showing , will put them in water & hope few will survive, if not I have the main plant of which I’ll repot it too.. I hope I’ll have your luck.. I like the way you presented your video, makes me laugh 😆,
I finally own SIX different hoya varieties, but most of them are so so so tiny, and I'm just looking forward to them growing!! Then I might consider pruning them!! Great video!!!!
Discovering hoyas REALLY IS EXCITING! I know EXACTLY what you mean about not caring what they are. Each one is STILL so unique! I hope you enjoy every single day with your hoyas! 🌾💜
@@margiemcpeak9304 hoyas have steadily been on my top wishlist plants ever since I started getting plants. Unfortunately we could only find carnosa here, because it's well acclimated outdoors in the mediterranean climate, but that was pretty much it. After some searching, some luck and because I kept asking the nursery employees I am now a proud owner of a few more species and loving them!! I'm actually planning on placing them on a special spot, I might upload a video about that once I get to do it!! ^_^
So glad you put out this video. I recently got into hoya’s and bought a whole bunch of them. I took cuttings before I knew that it was “bad” to prune them and I absolutely panicked. I wanted to kick myself for cutting them but now I have faith they will flower! 😂🌸🌿✂️🤷🏻♀️
I love this video!!! I learned so much and it is so informative and really helpful for beginners like me. Thank you so much for all that you do it is really helping me out.
Hi Betsy, thank you for being such a funny and informative teacher. Love the video, thank you for using centimetres rather than inches. I am going to prune my hoya tomorrow - yes, I've been really afraid of trying.
New subscriber and I’ve binge watched almost every video of yours today lol love this video! Your so funny and informative. I recently bought a rainbow fern/ peacock fern ( selaginella uncinata ) and I’m IN LOVE with him but I’m a bit of a plant newbie and desperately need your care advice. I love him so much and I want him to be happy and grow. If you could please make a video on them I’d so very much appreciate it. I also have a blue star fern ( Phlebodium aureum ) which I’m obsessed with too and any info on him would be great. Thank girl!! ❤️
My Calathea care video pretty much covers all Calathea, so you could check that out. As for the blue star fern, I haven't got one right now but maybe in the future.
Is a fern a type of Calathea? Lol I literally didn’t know that. I haven’t had luck at all with Calathea (I’ve killed about 3-4). So fingers crossed I can keep my selaginella uncinata alive 😩
I love your videos…..as you say it is important to have a node when you take a cutting . I thought the roots would grow out of the node , however you did not have the node under water just the stem. Where do the roots come from then. Ann from Ottawa
Hi Betsy! I haven't been afraid to take cuttings from my hoyas. However, hearing you explain the positives vs. negatives of the issue have convinced me of the benefit in doing so. I only started collecting my 40+ hoyas last year and a few of them are sizable. Since I'm not only as old as dirt; but also, in declining health (according to my so-called "specialists"), I've never really EXPECTED to see my hoyas bloom. EVER! NOW, here YOU are telling us that ALL hoyas don't necessarily HAVE TO BE rootbound in order to flower! THAT, my dear, changes everything, as far as I'm concerned! GAME ON! Let me grow these babies! Betsy, do you fertilize your hoyas? If so, with what? (If I've asked you this previously, please remember that old folks are forgetful & are forever repeating stuff. Just respect your elders & answer the damn question. Ok? Lol!) Also, what kind of water do you root your cuttings in? Tap? Distilled? Room temp? What? Thank you in advance for your answers and thanks for sharing your knowledge, time & sense of humor with your followers! Plant LOVE!🌾💜
Hey Margie! I root my Hoya bella and Hoya carnosa cuttings in regular tap water that I refresh every 1-2 days. I have been rooting all the others in Hoya potting mix with or without root hormone, I don't really see any difference, they always root easily for me. As for fertilizer, in the past, when I watered my orchids, I would have some left over orchid fertilizer and I'd pour that into my Hoya bella but that was back when I only had two Hoyas! Now it's time to do a bit of research on Hoya fertilization and that I will. 🙂You can expect information about that from me in the future.
I've been trying to find a 'how to' on this topic exactly for days now .. this was the most clear & educational video I have watched . Thank you . I was seriously stressing about pruning my Hoya. One question I have a vine about a yard long , so I could cut that up & make a few new plants?
I have 3 little hoya cuttings which have decided to become very long strings with few leaves beyond the string... Hopefully turning some of those into cuttings will them them stop being stringy!
Learning plant anything is great but learning it from you is like the best ever. 😁 You make it even more enjoyable than it already is... 🙌 This was sooo informative as usual. Thank you! 💚
Does my cutting have to have a leaf on it or can it just be a node, I have a Hoya with 2 long (4.5 feet 120-140 cm) vines. I will have a go but need to know whether I can use the foot long vine .. it has lots of bumpy bits on it and even peduncles on the nodes but no leaves??
Always lookin forward to your videos 😁🌿🍃🍀💚 is it the same for carnosa 3 color?
Yes.
Thank you.
I needed that...yes all 13 minutes and 31 seconds of it!
Definitely a keeper...now let me go get my scissors 😛
Very informative. Million thanks
You are so right. Some grower treat their Hoya Plants as if they are delicate. I find them tough as old boots as the saying goes.
I always come to you when I need Hoya info. Thank you so much!!
I really love your channel!! The plant community will never be the same! 😅😍
Hi Betsy!
Thank you! Would "banana water" be suitable for fertilizing hoya carnosa?
Hi from Singapore Betsy! You're fantastic! Just subbed!!!
You've made me brave ! Going in to prune my Hoyas... peduncle or not ! Lol !! Love your video's! Crazy Kansas plant Granny !!! 😉
I loved this 😻 thank u
Thanks for the video, I beheaded my huge Hoya carnosa before I saw your channel, was my first time & didn’t know what I was doing, cut it all the way done & got 50 cuttings, thanks for showing , will put them in water & hope few will survive, if not I have the main plant of which I’ll repot it too.. I hope I’ll have your luck.. I like the way you presented your video, makes me laugh 😆,
Your are “mad” adorable. Thanks so much for your Hoya pruning information. I love HOYAS💚
I finally own SIX different hoya varieties, but most of them are so so so tiny, and I'm just looking forward to them growing!! Then I might consider pruning them!!
Great video!!!!
Oh that's really exciting!
@@betsybegonia it is!!!!!! Most of them are still some carnosa varieties but I don't caaaare!! 😍😍😍
Thanks for the info, I chopped all my hoya's today. Things will never be the same for them
They'll grow, grow, groooow!
@@betsybegonia Yes yes yessss
I have a hoya serpens, lacunosa eskimo and mathilde splash on the way. These hoya's are taking me down lol
@@sealife13 Beautiful varieties!
@@betsybegonia I also bought a hoya bella variegata. Can you also start a channel for patients that are recovering from their hoya addiction?
love your videos! thanks for sharing.
So glad you put out this video. I recently got into hoya’s and bought a whole bunch of them. I took cuttings before I knew that it was “bad” to prune them and I absolutely panicked. I wanted to kick myself for cutting them but now I have faith they will flower! 😂🌸🌿✂️🤷🏻♀️
Good luck! I'm sure they'll do great.
I love this video!!! I learned so much and it is so informative and really helpful for beginners like me. Thank you so much for all that you do it is really helping me out.
Thank you so much for watching. 🙂
Thank you Miss Betsy, I will try getting some cutting and repot them.🌱
Thank you The cutting information is wonderful, now I need to find a Hoya plant sale. Hoyas are on my wish list.
You go out and get'em!
@@begoniasarawak No, ferns are not the same as Calathea. But both usually require high humidity.
I love your videos…..as you say it is important to have a node when you take a cutting . I thought the roots would grow out of the node , however you did not have the node under water just the stem. Where do the roots come from then. Ann from Ottawa
Thanks, have one here with 3 2-metre long vines , have to prune I think
Very encouraging! Thanks💖
i have a pedunkle that also has a dry piece extending to the air... can i cut off the dried piece?
Can you show us the rooting in water after you've pruned those 2 nodes?
I tried it earlier but it didn't work. Can you advise why?
Which side of the cutting needs to be in the water? You did it on opposite sides in your video😊
Thanks Betsy! You're a gem! 🌾💜
Thank you! 💚
Thank you so much, I'm so happy to hear you enjoy my videos.
Thank you for the information!
You are most welcome, it's my pleasure! 🙂
