Joel Guy Jr. Trial Day 3 - Defendant's Roommate Michael McCracken Testifies

  • NOTE: TN is a DP state, but DP is not being sought in this case.
Tennessee man Joel Michael Guy Jr., 32, stands trial in the horrific 2016 murders of his parents Joel Michael Guy, Sr., 61, and Lisa Guy, 55. The trial is scheduled to run Monday, September 28 to Friday, October 2, according to records. The Law&Crime Network will be live each day with coverage running from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. ET.
The defendant’s three sisters reportedly told authorities everything seemed okay when the family sat together for Thanksgiving in 2016. But just days after that final get-together, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office said Joel Guy Jr. murdered his parents in especially horrifying fashion. Both victims were stabbed and dismembered, their remains placed in different rooms of the house, deputies said.
Authorities suggested the murders happened sometime between Friday, November 25, or the middle of Saturday, November 26. Guy Jr. allegedly put his parents’ remains in “an acid based solution” to destroy evidence.
Investigators said that the defendant, who had been in living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana after reportedly withdrawing from Louisiana State University, returned home on the 27th after killing his parents. His parents were last seen alive on Friday the 25th.
Authorities say that Guy Jr. killed his parents after they told him they would no longer pay his bills.
Someone wants the possibility of the death penalty for this case. It’s not the prosecution. The defendant recently asked that he be allowed to represent himself in motions that request the judge and jury be allowed to consider capital punishment in the event of a conviction.
To be clear, the state is not pursuing the death penalty for him. The reason why is currently unclear.
“Ethical rules prohibit the District Attorney’s Office from commenting on pending cases,” said Sean McDermott, a spokesman for Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen, said in an email to Knox News.

@@janetbenning2645 Mr McCracken could be a really decent guy who took pity on this misfit for all we know. I could be judging him too highly as well. I took note that Joel Michael Fuckwit said to him something along the lines of "I thought we could live a happy life after this" meaning they would have no cash issues and could do what they liked. Who knows what that might entail... Lay with dogs, pick up fleas eh.

He swallows hard, his breathing is a little deeper, his eyes start getting moist. His whole face and body language changes while he is on the stand. Then when he is finished testifying Joel watches him until he is out the door. They must have been extremely close.

@Dee G totally agree. I think they know he is gay from things they found in his apartment and that’s what they said was inadmissible. They didn’t want this trial to be about his sexuality, which is good because I don’t think it was his motive. I do think if he or his lover were trying to hide their relationship and the fact that they were gay, it could explain his rage. Especially if his parents accused him of something that they found out or he blamed them somehow for his sexuality.

One of the 1st responding police officers was a part of the interview and he's recalling the moment when he walked in and saw the scene. He's talking about seeing one of her sons struggling to breathe and bleeding to death and the look on his face makes my heart ache. That man was truly traumatized but what he saw. It's absolutely gut wrenching.

I just can’t get over that they literally paid his way his entire life... his mom literally loved this kid so much, worked for nothing other than to take care of this spoiled brat! Went to Walmart and bought her brat of a son snacks and ice cream.. all while she awaited her unknown demise. Lisa and Joel SR paid his gas to get to their house for thanksgiving, including the vehicle he drives in. Then they paid for the items he used to literally kill them, including every last item needed for the clean up and disposal of the bodies.. then they paid for items to help the spoiled brat clean his wounds up. He went to the same Walmart his mother was just at before he murdered her. I just keep thinking about the video of her walking out of Walmart, thinking about her drive home, her pulling into their driveway... walking in, and Joel possibly acting like he needed her upstairs- yelling down to her. As always, mommy was right there. He attacked his father while he was exercising. And last but not least, all I can think about is that both of their last thoughts and sights, were of their CHILD... whom they made and brought into this world, and now is the one taking them out of it, MURDERING them. I cannot imagine his mother’s thoughts. Her baby boy stabbing her to death... probably begging him to stop.... i don’t even know these people and this is extremely heart wrenching. The prosecution is absolutely amazing. That special agent is a little odd lol

Those are my thoughts too! He seems pretty proud of himself and his ‘handiwork’! What was the most distraught part for me, when the Dr was showing the pictures of his mother’s body (what was left of it) he re-adjusted ‘something’ in his pants where his hands had been. I am feeling sick of even having my head go where it did! Also, when she said that his mom was dismembered at the knees, I was wondering if that was so that he had better access. Not sure if there are any evidence of her having been sexually assaulted too, but I would not put that past this very distraught piece of a human being! He has NO soul and clearly deriving pleasure by reliving it all during the trial. Sick!! Sick!! Sick!! He is very aware of what he planned and his execution of it! Both parents put up a fight for their lives. He did not do this only for the money! He would murder again. Falling asleep during the trial, and yawning! Disgusting!!

Maybe thats why the roommate moved away almost a year before this happened. Maybe thats why the roommate started slowing down communications

I don’t think his best friend/former roommate was entirely truthful. Funny how his memory blanks when asked certain questions. I.e. why did Joel tell him that his mother was an optometrist when she wasn’t.
I bet Joel fell apart in 2015 once Michael moved away for his post-doc and new job leaving him on his own. In desperation and with less than a sound mind, he hatched a very ill-conceived plan to become financially independent which would allow him more freedom to follow his roommate who was many miles away.
For whatever reason, he is unable to function well in society with others. I wonder what that’s all about. He may be good in Math and sciences, working with formulas and equations but his critical thinking is stunted if you ask me.

  • @auzziernvdl

Oh that was NOT just a roommate. That was a lover. You don’t talk to a person that is “just” a roommate like that. That may be the only time I saw an emotion other than him stopping his smile when the prosecutor gave her opening statement and she said “diabolical stew” of his parents bodies. Maybe that “roommate” is going to send him commissary money for the rest of his miserable life in prison.

He's not stupid enough to think the sloppy job he did would help him get away with it. Literally everything he did was only half done or done in an exagerated way. For example, cleaning up afterward. He took precautions to put plastic sheets down but didn't bother disposing of things. He turned the heat up to rapidly decompose the body parts but should have expected there'd be every chance someone could come to the house before that happened. The biggest thing is cooking his mother's head. That's right out of movies, what would it have accomplished other than making him look so horrible he's irredeemable?

His soul just needed to let go and embrace the blessings he did have, he must’ve been a tortured soul to feel so crappy to see this as the best way. If anything, he’s going back over and over again where he made his mistakes and how he’d fix them if he had it to do over again.
Also, IMO, he chose to isolate himself from family and others. He built up hatred for his parents in his mind only. His folks, especially his mom, must have been extremely generous to him, yet he doesn’t see it that way. He’s greedy. The prospect of actually having to work and take care of himself, which most adults take pride in, appalled him. I mean how dare they do that to him...?

But the fact that his room mate and good friend who he knew for so long didn't even know he had sisters and that he went to a boarding school, seems very odd. He somehow felt abandoned in the family otherwise this wouldn't have been going on. And psychologists should rip this entire thing apart because it's important to observe, learn from and note. Again, what was done to has parents, not ok, but there's some underlying reasons and dysfunctional interaction between him and the family that obviously needed to be addressed long ago.
