I agree. As an educator I can hear the clarity in his instruction. He does not assume or take for granted what the jury knows so he makes sure to explain & elaborate.
One thing's for certain....or at least seems so to me. He appears to actually have enjoyed reliving this through the evidence presented. And that is almost as disturbing as the crime itself.

I have to disagree from what I see. He looks “medicated”. Maybe on Xanax. He looks like he is trying to absorb what he had done because he looks like he is clueless about his actions. Did they say if he was on drugs or alcohol when he killed his parents? He is absolutely a psychopath and being on the wrong drugs definitely was a contributing factor. Sorry I can’t watch this so I didn’t watch the whole thing. It’s creepy to me.

I have to say that this judge has a calm, thoughtful, and instructive delivery. I think he was a great choice for this case, because there was a lot of gruesome scientific information.

Thank the lord the daughter didn’t go there and the supervisor called for that wellness check.....it was the plan for the daughter to go there after work and check in on her parents because they hadn’t heard from them....omg thank goodness the police got there first. What a nightmare she would have walked into I thought. I don’t even know what kind of justice there would be for something such as this crime to be honest....

Im delighted that during sentencing the judge stated that he was well aware of the killers cold demeanor and showed no remorse. Im so happy the judge was paying attention and that affected sentencing

I feel the same way about Anthony Tobt. I had to pause a few times while he was testifying because he was infuriating. He is a piece work. I think they could have just put him on the stand and the jury would have convicted him.

I for instance have parents who love me and want the best for me, but i also have irreparable damage because my parents, emotionally, were not there for me and that puts a lot of stress on a relationship. Its all about weighing the good and the bad. In this case the evidence suggests more good than bad when it came to the parents and more bad than good when it came to Joel Jr.

He's not bothered at all because 1. he's a psychopath and 2. he realizes that even in prison he will be taken care of. Why would he want to be a free man (even if that were a possibility -- I know he won't be though), if his plan didn't work? If he's free no one will be able to take care of him. In prison he'll be fed, won't pay any bills, and isolated in his cell which is somewhat similar to the lifestyle he had -- except this time he won't be free and have the ability to do what he pleases.
An observation in general about extremes of human beings. I find it particularly interesting to consider two similar but vastly different human behaviors on display here, namely those of the judge and those of the defendant: The cool/dispassionate demeanor and speech of the judge is employed by him to bring an almost kind calmness and soothing sense of order to the room, which is intended, it appears to me, as a means to respect and help all the people hurt by this hideous crime to get through this difficult time. But the similar calm, cool and quietness of the defendant indicates the very opposite: It is a manifestation of his utter IN-ability to feel for, care for anyone other than himself. Outwardly quite similar but inwardly a vast gulf between them. The judge's quiet cool represents a very commendable sensitivity, concern and decency, only a few feet away from another kind of quiet cool---a coldly calculating, unfeeling, veritable MACHINE of a human being. The contrast is profoundly stunning to me.
I love this judge he is unquestionably thorough and detailing any possible questions so it is completely clear what your expectations are well in his courtroom whether you are a attorney thank your a witness a citizen in the gallery watching the proceedings or if you are the defendant. He's going to make sure there is no confusion in his courtroom.
I keep thinking about that too. The shock, pain and suffering must have been excruciating for both of them. I think his father put up a fierce struggle and fight but to no avail. His daughters described the two as fun-loving, kind and caring, and that they were all very close - So very sad.
I can't imagine either. I just can't seem to even think about how I would react. A stranger or something I would fight to the death one or the other of us would not walk out of that room. But my SON... could I ever even raise a hand to him with intent to truly harm him? I honestly don't think I could. If I fought back and somehow took his life I would be taking part of my own life, my heart couldn't survive that. What a horrendous thing to even have to think about. I pray for their daughters and family what an impossible think to heal from.

I've got to say I love watching American court cases.I live in West Australia and I find it fascinating. This judge would be one who stands out to me. He cares and he is very considerate towards everyone.If only more judges had the expertise and kindness that this love judge has ...court cases would be a lot more smoothly. Listening to this doctor describe the injuries to the actual bones of these victims makes me ache in pain for them! I feel so sorry for them! This monster brutally massacred them! He shows no remorse for any of it! The only reason he is in court is to relive all of this. There is no logical defense that could ever be put forward! Defense has barely cross examined any witness. This is a side show that their family should not have to be subjected to!
Also, I believe he loved his old roommate more than just a friend. He has shown no emotions towards his family, but after his old roommate got done testifying and was leaving, he couldn't take his eyes off him. And the way he talked to him over the phone.

Disarticularion vs. Dismemberment could easily be described as separating body parts at the joints where there are gaps between bones (easier) vs hacking off limbs anywhere including through bones (harder if you hard to saw through or break bone). Just like cutting up a chicken.

I think it's worth pointing out that Joel's breathing rate is less than 60 bpm (probably nearer 45-50). - average 12-18. It would suggest that he's quite excited, watching the images of his dead parent's remains. He's breathing through his stomach, which would suggest that he's reasonably relaxed. If he were not, you would see upper chest breathing, as his limbic system kicks in. We are looking at a psychopath.
I think as a courtesy to the expert testimony we see the expert NOT the accused. We’re here to see the case hear testimony and make decisions too. He's not bothered at all because 1. he's a psychopath and 2. he realizes that even in prison he will be taken care of. Why would he want to be a free man (even if that were a possibility -- I know he won't be though), if his plan didn't work? If he's free no one will be able to take care of him. In prison he'll be fed, won't pay any bills, and isolated in his cell which is somewhat similar to the lifestyle he had -- except this time he won't be free and have the ability to do what he pleases.

An observation in general about extremes of human beings. I find it particularly interesting to consider two similar but vastly different human behaviors on display here, namely those of the judge and those of the defendant: The cool/dispassionate demeanor and speech of the judge is employed by him to bring an almost kind calmness and soothing sense of order to the room, which is intended, it appears to me, as a means to respect and help all the people hurt by this hideous crime to get through this difficult time. But the similar calm, cool and quietness of the defendant indicates the very opposite: It is a manifestation of his utter IN-ability to feel for, care for anyone other than himself. Outwardly quite similar but inwardly a vast gulf between them. The judge's quiet cool represents a very commendable sensitivity, concern and decency, only a few feet away from another kind of quiet cool---a coldly calculating, unfeeling, veritable MACHINE of a human being. The contrast is profoundly stunning to me.

I love this judge he is unquestionably thorough and detailing any possible questions so it is completely clear what your expectations are well in his courtroom whether you are a attorney thank your a witness a citizen in the gallery watching the proceedings or if you are the defendant. He's going to make sure there is no confusion in his courtroom.

I keep thinking about that too. The shock, pain and suffering must have been excruciating for both of them. I think his father put up a fierce struggle and fight but to no avail. His daughters described the two as fun-loving, kind and caring, and that they were all very close - So very sad.

I can't imagine either. I just can't seem to even think about how I would react. A stranger or something I would fight to the death one or the other of us would not walk out of that room. But my SON... could I ever even raise a hand to him with intent to truly harm him? I honestly don't think I could. If I fought back and somehow took his life I would be taking part of my own life, my heart couldn't survive that. What a horrendous thing to even have to think about. I pray for their daughters and family what an impossible think to heal from.

I've got to say I love watching American court cases.I live in West Australia and I find it fascinating. This judge would be one who stands out to me. He cares and he is very considerate towards everyone.If only more judges had the expertise and kindness that this love judge has ...court cases would be a lot more smoothly. Listening to this doctor describe the injuries to the actual bones of these victims makes me ache in pain for them! I feel so sorry for them! This monster brutally massacred them! He shows no remorse for any of it! The only reason he is in court is to relive all of this. There is no logical defense that could ever be put forward! Defense has barely cross examined any witness. This is a side show that their family should not have to be subjected to!

Disarticularion vs. Dismemberment could easily be described as separating body parts at the joints where there are gaps between bones (easier) vs hacking off limbs anywhere including through bones (harder if you hard to saw through or break bone). Just like cutting up a chicken.

My apologies here as I do not mean to be political, but if there was ever a justification for the death penalty, this particular defendant would be a poster child. People like this defendant who are accused of these kinds of crimes, should not be allowed to be seen on camera. It just stokes their narcissism. This person in my opinion does not deserve to ever be seen on camera in connection with this crime. As an aside, I cannot imagine being the people who purchased that house. Can you imagine getting that call, as the new home purchaser?

I think it's worth pointing out that Joel's breathing rate is less than 60 bpm (probably nearer 45-50). - average 12-18. It would suggest that he's quite excited, watching the images of his dead parent's remains. He's breathing through his stomach, which would suggest that he's reasonably relaxed. If he were not, you would see upper chest breathing, as his limbic system kicks in. We are looking at a psychopath.
I think as a courtesy to the expert testimony we see the expert NOT the accused. We’re here to see the case hear testimony and make decisions too.
