As bad as this movie was, it does have a sweet idea that the brother is not only making sure she takes care of herself, but that she has a reason to and a why she should. It just wasn't executed well.
If it wasn't for the fact that this film was trying to hoodwink unsuspecting grannies in the back alleys of Walmart into buying what they thought was "The Snowman", I might actually have a tiny bit of respect for the writers.
I honestly find the message of this movie really fucked up. It basically says, "you're a weenie if you feel negative emotions, you have to be happy all the time! If you're not, fake it for everyone around you!" There's way too much pressure on people to be happy all the time, and any deviation is automatically billed as depression and treated with pills. I'm not saying depression doesn't exist, believe me, but we stigmatize people when they feel frustrated, helpless, downtrodden, etc, even just a little. It's normal to feel this way sometimes, and we shouldn't be ashamed of it.
It's especially fucked up because they're literally saying a dying child shouldn't feel this way. Feeling frustrated and hopeless is met by "stop feeling sorry for yourself". Seriously?!? That would be hard for most adults in that situation, let alone a child!
ShiningDialga I agree. It's like saying you can overcome any illnesses, physical or mental, by just "wanting to get well". It's an asinine statement because of course most peope with illnesses want to get well, but need time, medication, and support.
I get that having a positive mentality is important, but that alone isn't going to solve everyone's problems.
ShiningDialga I don't know. Her brother didn't tell her to cheer up, he wanted her to cheer up and start eating again, so he spent time with her and told her a story. This was honestly quite inventive for a little kid. I think Snowdin saying that she can accomplish more if she stops feeling sorry for herself is just tough love. Sometimes you need to shake someone like that to help them overcome their issues.
CookieMastah The boy was fine, it's mostly the snowman I was thinking about. Tough love can work, but I feel that it's more useful on someone who is in a rut, or has caused their own problems. Using it on someone who has a potentially fatal illness, and who's a little kid, is almost twisted. Kids need to learn that negative emotions aren't something to be afraid or disdainful of. They're normal and okay to feel sometimes is. By doing that, you teach them how to properly handle feeling negatively. If you just tell them that it's wrong to feel sad, frustrated, etc, that's how you end up with the stigma of depression today.
+CookieMastah Sure, telling some kid who is dying to stop feeling sorry for themselves works great. That kind of tough love only works when the person you're telling it to has caused their own problems, or is making them worse. Fatal illnesses and disabilities don't have the same application.

The “she has to want to get better” thing is so-Blech. Like, when I was diagnosed with cancer at 25 (stage 2, type A, Hodgkin’s Lymphoma), I had people asking me if I was praying or trying cannabis oil, or other weird questions as to how I was dealing with it. No. I was getting a porticath put in my chest so I could go through chemo for four months, because the tumour in my chest was an inch and a half by an inch.
But no. I should have wanted to get better. That makes sense. About as much sense as cannabis oil, anyway.
I’m 27 now, and I’ve got scans the next four years to make sure I stay in remission, but I’ll make sure to tell the people in the cancer ward “you should just want to get better”.

The G-Wing yeah, and I had even asked if they were talking about weed in terms of relaxing, pain management, or something-but no. They actually said it would cure my cancer. I couldn’t even reply to them, as I probably would have said something exceedingly rude.
Alexis Crow thank you! My next CT scan is in September! If that scan comes back good, then my oncologist will move my scans to once a year instead of every few months.

The cast of Beast Wars being in this just goes to show, a decent cast cannot save a bad story, bad writing, and a monumentally flawed premise. It’s also an indicator that a decent cast given bad direction nose dives quickly.

Not only Snowden is creepy, he's also a jerk! Everytime Emery-Elizabeth is scared or panics; he said her ideas are stupid and wants to leave her alone on a mountain. The shameless charlatan isn't a villain, Snowden is the real villain of this movie! All the old man did is stole a smile and turn toys into sludge, the Snowman did way worst and his attitude is awful!

I just wasted about 45 minutes of my life on that... thing, and I honestly feel like it actually had potential to be a good, sweet story. The boy took her sister's thoughts away from her illness, made sure she took care of herself, and gave her the will to live that she needed. (which is weird, like the only reason why she wanted to stay alive is to hear a story??) But like it shows how much he cared about her and I thought that was sweet. Sadly they combined this idea with a poor attempt to copy The Snowman (Or Frosty? Maybe both?).
Well better Goodtimes entertainment then video brinquedo.

Brother builds snowman to make sick sister happy, no story about Electra and her kingdom, next morning sister and the snowman are gone and left behind are a note and little smiling snowgirl wearing sisters robe, it’s a race against the clock to save sister from the creature he created to make her happy.
