I'm actually thrilled at how much this game captures the feel of the original. It's almost identical, right down to many of the old maps being remade perfectly. It shocks me to see reviewers completely miss the point. I guess I'm old.
This is a remake, and from what I've seen and played, a damned good one.

Can you find missile type weapons to shoot at the other cars or do you have to destroy them by crashing in to them?
You can shoot mines and anvils at other cars, even repulse them into the air with massive springs shooting out of your car. It's a shame none of those are shown in the review cause you can cause some great moments with the various powerups the game offers.
The framerate issues is the thing that bothers me the most. It feels like something is pulling me back. like rubber banding you get with high pings. I do like the game though. For £10 it's a steal.

Looks like a ps2 game! Bland areas lacking detail and anything of interest! I can deal with basic graphics though if the game is good hell, the original deus ex is still one of my favourite games and it looks like shit now! What i cant take though is bad gameplay and this just looks as basic as it gets, no excitement just dull racing with a gimmick which was once shocking and as a result sold a lot of copies but its not controversial anymore and a game needs more than shock value to be good
I see some comments that are practically kind of nonsense beginning with the "awfulness" of the game and comparing it to modern high end massive audience games that are even advertised in TV.
Guys, it's Carmageddon, it's a game that basically resurrected from 14+ years of being dead; it started as a Kickstarter Campaign for fans of the saga to donate and create an even better game that looks better but kept that nostalgic touch that Carmageddon had in the old days. I wasn't born in the era where it became controversial but I played it as a little kid and for me it's the best racing game ever made, filled with lots of opportunities and not that formal gameplay of only racing, winning stuff and that's it; then people compares it to Need For Speed and guys, it's not EA, it's an indie company, Stainless.
As for graphics, of course, they won't be Crysis 3 graphics, mantained to a fair point of view, objectively it's a game developed by a group of people for the sake of old fans and resurrecting the saga, despite all the graphics, I mean, maybe they couldn't afford buying the last version of Frostbite engine ya know.
As for sound, it's great music, metal and electronics created by independent artists that wanted to contribute with the game and fits perfectly in a racing game that involves in smashing people and other cars, that's it. Again, compared to Need For Speed, these guys won't license songs by The Christal Method, Mudvayne, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, etc. I think it was a miracle that they included at least Zero Signal by Fear Factory. Then sound, it's well designed, crashes, screams and even the goddamn US elections mod that replicates dialogs. And keeps the old commentary voices from the original games.
And gameplay, well, that handling I admit it's not good at all, it becomes somehow difficult but that's exactly what gives the kind of funny and dull touch that Carmageddon has on purpose, that kind of dull gameplay heads back to the old games too, and all the games had it. Then, you have a few more game modes and stuff to unlock that adds something more at least to the old games that were practically the same with different graphics, somehow it makes something different but staying true to what the game was back in the day. And well as for the AI, it was always crap, I can pretty much agree with this review with that, an improvement that can be made is of course a more difficult AI.
But to conclude all this, people, you can't compare this game to modern stability games from big companies such as Need For Speed, Twisted Metal and all those big racing titles that may come to your head. This was initially a game made for FUN just for a couple of hours, you just come from work, or school or whatever the hell you were making, play for a couple of hours and then head back to something else, it's not the prior game of the year, it wasn't their objective, it's only an indie game made from a couple of friends that decided to make some kind of humoristic bloody demolition racing game and fortunately succeeded into the inner circles of people that are "chemically unbalanced" (as the game states) and fancy to these kind of games.
But then I guess this is the most objective review out there, that's a good point cuz really most of the videos out there from big kiddies relay on the fact that it doesn't stand the test of time but that doesn't even cares a shit to the developers, they're just creating a funny game and that's all.
when the current consoles are mostly concerned with graphics and stories, this game is refreshing. i have a blast every time i play this and that's what makes it a game to me, there are way too many games these days that just aren't that much fun, good the first time around but not much replay value

PLANET RRR He's over exaggerating. The maps weren't designed all that well, the story wasn't spectacular and it didn't do anything to really elevate the series but it was still a really fun, fast paced TM game at it's core. It even supports split screen.

Each vehicle has its own feel, they all control very differently but yes they are buttery and thats always been like that in carma, and this game was a result of a kickstarter of fans that wanted carmageddon back :) so ofc they went with the old style of controls that are apart of the franchise that are part of the personality of the game, like it or not! love it or hate it! you fail to mention that.
I think they got the controls alright! they have the personality of the carmageddon games and at the same time a a bit easier to drive. they are frustrating but wen you start to get the hang of it, it does feel great.
Guess iam the only one who is glad they went this direction,instead of more "casual" and easy controls.
If you want a remake of the original Carmageddon it's fine. If you want a slick, modern game then it's probably not for you.

No, their video shows exactly what a travesty the game *truly* is. It's ugly, it's dull, the handling is atrocious, the framerate is abysmal, the bugs are hilarious. It's not even a budget game.. it's like something Digital Homicide would squit out onto Greenlight.
This should have been amazing, instead it's embarrassing, made even worse with the appalling PC version being abandoned broken whilst the useless developers hop skip and jump over to consoles, in order to concentrate on making an updated copy of the game for their new masters.

Carmageddon never had realistic car behavior or controls... sort of harsh to blame it for that... it is actually a plus, not a negative. Same with your AI criticism.. you ALWAYS won every race if you did the boring "lap" option... that was the exact same from the very first... no one ever really plays like that however, and neither do the opponents.. Did you play the first Dos title as it seems you did not and don't understand what Carma is all about.

I dont mind the graphis at all, some textures do look like shit tho specially the terrain. its the gameplay that is cancerous, i cant believe that in a racing/ demolition game you never seem to go fast enough, theres no sense of speed and then out of the sudden you cant turn at all.control is shit

Ropya I'll use UK currency as that's where I'm from. AAA games are usually between £50-60. Carmageddon is £30, nearly half the price. And I also called it KIND OF budget, not just "budget" because, like yourself, I thought £30 wasn't a proper budget price.

This looks and sounds like a low end PS3/Xbox360 release.

I played it and i didn't have any problems. AI was good and i liked the graphics
so the car controls is pretty much same as in previous titles ... good ... havent any issues in camera on steam version .. I guess console cant handle AI as I didnt have any weird stuff with ai on steam aswell
nope wore. probably 15-20% decrease in response from say #2. More than enough to feel far more like a comedy game than the past titles .

Thanks for reviewing. I played a lot of Carmageddon 2, and a bit of TDR 2000. While not a great game, it was fun to watch your review and reminisce on some old school gaming.
This series, kinda like Postal 2 is a great stress ball game, mowing down pedestrians has always felt very satisfying throughout the games and the vehicular combat is great fun. Although this game does look shoty in terms of presentation it does make up for it in the carnage. Good review!

What a shame, I remember loving the original and think it could have a good modern day version if they actually put some effort in.
The pc version got some nice patches that sorted some of these problems. As glitchy as it is, it was nice to see the series back haha.

Been waiting this game forever, so when it came it really dissapointed me, i can say Carmageddon 2 is the best of the series so far, this actually feels like a Carmageddon TDR all over again

This game is the worst ever
One genre that has been lacking total competency this generation is definitely arcade racers. Besides the Need for speed game from 2013 and Forza Horizon the genre has been so unbearably stagnant. There's more racing Sims than you can shake a stick at though and those don't do it for me. Where are the Wipeouts, MotorStorms, Burnouts? ):

GTA has no impressive damage model and the physics are a joke (way too esy to control the cars). I don't see your point, because there are no similarities between Carmageddon and GTA at all. They both have cars and that's about it.
swordfish1986 you can drive over peds and crash into each other. That's about whst this game has. And though GTA physics and driving are off, comparing it to this that has worse physics and driving sloppy driving is redundant. So the only thing is damage model is better. That's not worth a buy or rent.
So I'm playing this now and the handling is really really grating on me. It makes the simplest task impossible and also the a.i sometimes seem to just stick to you so your left just being pushed in a straight line for ages. Does the handling get better with upgrades or should I just trade it in??

The original Carmageddon was the first ever PC game I played, back on a Pentium 166mhz. Regardless of the issues this is a massive nostalgia bomb so picking this up for XB1 (Even though I got Reincarnation on PC) is pretty much a given for me.
This series in my opinion is similar to the Earth Defense Force series... in that while the games may be janky and technically questionable, they are great fun for those who can see past the problems. You just have to kick your expectations to the curb so to speak.

I'm still gonna buy it today, I've missed Carmageddon and car combat games for tooo long!
They probably did this with the bad performance just for nostalgia reasons :D I mean, with Carma 2, it seemed it doesn’t matter what PC you have, it always ran badly :D That said, several years later (and on PC), this new Carma runs great and plays great. So, to anybody watching this review in 2019, keep in mind half of it no longer applies.

It's a definite buy now, if you're okay with buying from 3rd parties or waiting on a sale. I got the game for 99 cents during a random sale. It's also dirt cheap on sites like g2a.

Is this the exact same game as Carmageddon Incarnation? I actually have that one but never played it.
I think it's an updated Reincarnation. And don't worry, if you have Reincarnation on Steam, you should be getting Max Damage for free (last I heard).
From what I've seen so far, it's pretty much a straight up console port of Carmageddon Reincarnation.

Thanks! I had higher hopes for Incarnation than I should have, so it seems. I won't be touching it any time soon (which is fine, Carma 1 & 2 are pretty hard to top anyway, the grit is real on those)
2:07 onwards is that framerate judder or just TH-cam itself? Even with watching you can see this is pretty poor and why does it run st like 2 miles an hour.. It's so slowwwwwww. Good review though but I'll pass ;)

Great review, but I just don't see the fun factor in this footage here. Also looks like the creator of PS2 lighting was in charge of that very thing in this game. Never seen more bland color scenes.

It was a Kickstarter project.
All it is is a remastered version with a few new cars and tracks.
Hell,a lot of the sound effects are from the earlier games.

I'd say it's better than TDR. Carmageddon was always unapologetically Carmageddon. It never offered the best graphics or gameplay, but there was always something about each game that had me hooked. I got that feeling very strongly with this game.

See? This is what an unbiased, articulate, thought out and informative review sounds/looks like. Forget the mainstream highly paid dorks at IGN, Gamespot others. I had no idea this game was even in development, just saw it on the shelf and thought I should look it up first even though it was only $50. As a dusty old fart of a gamer who played the shit out of the first two and hated the 3rd I knew I should wait and see. Now I know I will enjoy when I only pay $20 in the used bin. Thanks for the solid review peeps.

People who complain about the graphics, they need to understand they are trying to keep the old classic Carmaggedon 1/2 look. While also staying a bit fresh.
People also need to understand the Carmageddon series has never been technically or graphically great, they are at heart janky fun where as the tagline even states you smash, crash and trash. It's a tarted up Carmageddon for current consoles and PC at a budget price... and it scratches my itch for some trashy fun. It's not like it detracts from the originals either, infact you can easily go and pick them up in all their glory from GOG.

This is just reiterating what I'm saying, in that the game is janky on all fronts, but that if you can look past these issues it is a fun time. You even allude to this yourself in the video: "for Carmageddon fans if you like driving around smashing the hell out of other cars.. this is probably the game for you", then going on to say that it is pretty fun.
Your video did a good job of pointing out the positives that contribute to the fun factor. In the comments however there's a shift in focus towards the negative aspects, which while I agree are there can be overlooked especially at the budget price, and fun can be found if you go in knowing what to expect, which again you pointed out well.
Agreed, besides we had it free not long ago on psplus for ps3 (i think it the same one), and it was atrocious.
The original on ps1 or ps2 was awesome tho, i dunno how they fail so badly to recreate that fun experience again

I'm old enough to have been around for the original, and was so excited when I first heard of the Carmageddon re-release/remake as I (among every PC gamer on the planet at that time) was a huge fan. However i can't help feeling a little disappointed with what they've done here.
