Shirley Collins, you are one of my favorite people that ever lived, hard to argue that you are the very voice of english folk music, and I'm honored that my time here overlapped with yours. Thank you!
That Shirley got her voice back after all these years makes me so happy. She has always had a distinctive, unadorned voice, and age has not diminished its power.
This puts a tear in my eye. My mother was from an Anglo-Canadian family (her father was from the Midlands), and when I was a tot she would bounce me on her knee and sing old and charming English folk songs, some rollicking and some just gorgeous, that she heard while growing up. It’s a poignant moment for me to remember her; she died 19 years ago. Thank you, Shirley and Ian!
Truly a living treasure. It is a privilege to witness a performance by Shirley and, thus (at the time of the concert), a peerless gem of 65 years of folk music history.
popped up on my recommended, gems like this tend to stop me in my tracks and just leave me in awe. what a time to be alive when amazing art is created, no matter what genre.
Shirley looks happy and connected to the music again. It's a pure joy. Been listening to all these songs as I drive through the North Yorkshire countryside. I hope she realises how much pleasure she is giving!
she should narrate childrens' storybooks and novels for grownups - because I'd listen to that lovely, comforting voice *all day.* chillin' in a reclined Lazy-boy chair, feet up..a good pillow, a warm blanket and my favorite tea and snacks.🤗
The Sweet Primroses is my favorite album ever and it is such a treasure to me. Your music changed my life Shirley. Thank you and i’ll always remember you ❤
Such an interesting version of Merry Golden Tree. Kind of like Peggy Seeger's, but different. I love that the Turkish Rovery & Spanish Enemy turns into the British Robbery. Right on! Your first husband who wrote Sweet Greens and Blues uses the tune I learned for The Waggoner's Lad. What a repository of music Shirley Collins is. Her instrumentalist is pretty wonderful, too. There's a song from the 1849 California Gold Rush that is variant of Tell Me True called My California Boy and is the same story as Tell Me True, but her lad took off to look for gold.Thank you Shirley and Ian for a lovely collection of traditional tunes and stories. From an old ballad singer and song teacher from Oakland CA
Amazing performance! What a wonderful trip to the past. This sort of music reminds me of my grandparents, from another time and what right now feels like another world.
My grandmother passed away some four years ago at the age of 90. We spread her ashes in the fields over looking the River Weaver where she was born and I was born. She would have liked this.
Kind of reminds me of watching Bagpuss as a wee boy. My 13 year old son can't believe that anyone ever watched such things on TV, or would listen to such beautiful and fragile music as this. Wonderful performance.
!!!!!! ive loved her for so long and i cant believe it took me 6 days to realize this video !!!!!! thank you npr, and thank you shirley collins for being an absolutely incredible artist and musician. incredible.
'Tell Me True' has many names and variant verses. It appears in the The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs (Steve Roud and Julia Bishop, 2012) as 'Early, early, all in the spring' (no.41). Roud lists several other alternative titles: 'Sweet William', 'A sailor's life', 'The Sailor Boy', 'Father, father build me a boat', and notes that it was even more popular in North America than in Britain and Ireland.
What a treat, you both were awesome!!! Can‘t get enough of really authentic artists. Ian‘s picking skills with Shirley‘s voice pulled me in and wouldn‘t let go. Had to listen a 2nd round! 🤓 Cheers from Switzerland
i abslutely love it! beautiful music, great stories and classy vibes. i think its about time to question the addiction of youth in our society. great and touching stories are everywhere.
I have been listening to NPR's Tiny Desk concerts for a few months now, and LOVE it much more than the radio, who plays the same music over & over and never changes the loop! So many more talented people out there. Thank you for introducing us to average friends & neighbors, who have a voice, talent, and story to share.
Shirley, you are the queen. What a pleasure to hear you.

This is a wonderful thing to write. I feel the same and love how you put it into words, and also how beautiful your moustache is.
As beautiful as morning blackbird or thrush our queen of folk ❤ thank you Shirley blessed be

I don't think the average NPR viewer understands what a legend this woman is. A founder of British folk music.
