Car Battery Revival- Save about $100 on a New Battery (Unedited)

- I revived this seven year old Duralast battery from AutoZone. It started with a 3.something voltage reading and did not have the power to properly crank a 95 Mitsubishi Galant. I searched the glorious Internet and found this old trick. The difference in price between a $115 battery and this process was worth the attempt and effort. I sincerely recommend this to anyone who needs a new battery. However, I am not liable for anyone else's failed attempts or accidents. Below are the instructions if you dare to attempt:
Safety First!
Just because you're cheap doesn't mean you should cut the cost of being safe. Use chemical resistant gloves, goggles, and some type of respiratory protection. I was handling toxic chemicals, with a tank-top, not cool.
Step 1:
Empty the battery's acid into a bucket that won't melt. I used an empty joint compound bucket. Learn from my time wasting mistake. I poured a mixture of about a tablespoon of baking soda to every 8 ounces of tap water into the battery. It reacts and overflows, and then subsides. Not cool. I would have been better off just emptying it first and then neutralizing it outside of the battery.
Step 2:
Neutralize the remaining acid in the battery by pouring that mixture of baking soda and water into the battery. Let it react until it starts coming out slightly cleaner. I kept doing this until it came out almost clear, but it probably would have taken a lot longer before that ever really happened because I think the mixture was eventually just reacting to the lead. So simply repeat this process about five to ten times, to be sure all the lead acid gets neutralized.
Step 3:
Mix about four ounces (1/2 cup) of alum to every half gallon of distilled water. Mix this well and don't let it sit too long because it will settle at the bottom. Some batteries will use between less than a gallon and more than a gallon of fluid, so mix enough for at least a half gallon. Check the voltage and see if it changed from what you originally had. It should be much higher after you pour it into the battery.
Step 4:
Refill the battery with the new mixture. Charge it slowly over night. This might take about a day and a half. I charged it until it reached well over 14 volts as if it were charging under normal operation in a vehicle. Then I put this old battery back in my vehicle and cranked it, at which point I realized it worked and I saved about $100.
The alum cost about $5 each at a local Walmart and the distilled water was about a dollar for a gallon. Each alum only has about 1.9 ounces, so you need about four for a gallon, but I only used two.
Before doing anything charge the battery with a charger with a 2 amp setting for 2 days to see if the battery will take any charge. Even if it only charges to 2 or 3 volts then the battery can be salvaged. If not then the battery probably can't be reconditioned. Otherwise dump out the old battery acid - get as much out as possible into a plastic 5 gallon paint bucket. Add 10 oz of baking soda to 1 gallon of tap water, shake the gallon of baking soda and water well to dissolve the baking soda in the water. Using a plastic funnel, add as much of the mixture as possible to each cell. Put the caps on the battery. Tape them on with duct tape. Shake the battery real good. Wear acid proof gloves. Pour out the baking soda/water repeat several times over the course of at least 1/2 hour til the mixture is used up. Rinse with distiller water til the battery is rinsed clean. Then add 12 oz of Epsom salt to a gallon of distilled water. Shake well to completely dissolve the Epsom salts. Now fill the battery with the distilled water/Epsom salt mixture filling each cell. Make sure the plates are completely covered. Replace the caps on the battery. Charge the battery over night and it should take a full charge.
I'm going to plagiarize this for my description.

That sounds very thorough.
He switched batteries on us!
please tell me how i am suppose to revive my battery with no explanation of what you have done there is no harm talking through what you are doing
I don't like my voice :(
Ruined 2 batteries with baking soda and epsom salts! add nothing but distilled water and pulse charge!
It`s surprising how easy this reconditioning steps are t.co/Folp6e7Dkc ! My auto batteries, cellphone battery, drill battery, camera battery, along with other forms of batteries are all repaired and useful again! Since starting this program I have ended up saving over $ 400 on batteries!?
I have tried several batteries also with the baking soda flush and epson salt-distilled water refill. Using the 2 amp, 10 amp, 55 amp 200 boost amp settings. No luck so far out off 4 batteries😕
This works great except for when the weather drops below 30 degree's as it will freeze possibly damaging your battery. Some auto stores actually carry battery acid for around $9 which will not freeze. The only down side to the acid is you have to be pretty careful with it as it can cause horrific burns .

Gotta agree with some, a video is basically useless without audio. But nevertheless, what I have found is most people whom works at any auto placement parts store is in the business of selling you something new. Just today I have an AutoZone employee try to sell me a new battery( $180.00) after telling me that mine had a dead cell. After adding a little distill water and about 2 hours on my old charger at 10 amps...Bam!! back in business.
You're damn right. Batteries are insanely expensive. I will probably make a better video some day where I recondition a battery.
Bruh, after recharging my Dura-Last from Auto Zone, that thing is still performing like a champ...All it needed was a little TLC and recharging, Screw Auto Zone and their sales staff, they knew it wasn't dead they were just trying to sale me a new $180+ battery...Worthless Ass Baster's
nice explaination .. did you say this battery will deliver 220 volts ac after your treatment ?
No, this car would've melted if it magically did, and I'd be dead.
Some people use alum, some use epsom salt? Which is best?
It irritates me and offends me. If you add Aluminium Sulfate or Magnesium Sulfate (Epsom Salt) and during charging Sulfate ions form Sulfuric Acid, Where do you think the Magnesium Ions or Aluminium Ions go? (I know, do you know?) You are misguiding the people with such videos without basic understanding of Chemistry. This is not a lawnmower belt to duct tape. You may very well make a video about Jesus Christ or Allah
I wonder why there are no (zero) videos of people using battery acid to refill the batteries after they flush them out. It's readily available at Auto Parts stores, & it's still a savings at under $20, and it would probably work better..
Also;
I'm no chemist, but it seems like the only noninvasive way to desulfate the plates would be to use reverse electrolysis in each cell, (the opposite of how it got there) which would take a full day at best, a few days at worse..
Anyway, has anyone tried the actual battery acid replacement, or seen a vid of someone doing it here?
some even use baking soda as shown in this video
I use Hot Sake get good and wasted then go buy a new battery
some even call me Maurice
i didn't see your written instructions - I just posted in reply to the post by the person complaining about the lack of narration in the video. I don't even know if the video actually lacked narration. Yes - better to drain the old battery acid before adding baking soda and water. Premixing the baking soda and gallon of water saves time. The gallon with 10 oz of baking soda is enough to neutralize the battery and remove enough of the lead sulfate coating the plates so that your battery can take a charge again. I hadn't heard of using alum. Adding it to water makes sulfuric acid. Should provide an instant charge to some degree after the desulfation process? Of course the Epsom salt and water mixture becomes acidic when the battery is charged.
Most people don't read the description. I'll make a better video one day about this same topic.
I tried this. Flushed the battery out 5 times with baking soda solution and then filled with alum and distilled water solution and charged it with a trickle charger for days and it did not work. Any suggestions of what I did wrong?
Not sure. I actually messed up and it worked. I should've drained the acid separately and then poured the water and baking soda while it was empty. My thinking before was the acid would be safer to handle and dump out if I neutralized it while still in the battery, but it was the wrong idea. Did you have the right proportions of the alum to water? By trickle charger, do you mean 2 amp hours? What voltage did the battery reach before you stopped charging? If you charged it for days, you could have damaged the cells from overcharging, I think. Did you make a video? Post a video of your process. My battery comes out weak, but functional. Check out my update video and see how it's doing now.
I used 1 tablespoon alum per cup (8 oz.) of water which is equivalent to 16 Tbsp (1 cup) per gal. of distilled water. I believe the charger is 1.5 V. The voltage read 12.5 V when I quit charging it.
My Family Album: This was a very poor presentation on a lot of levels. This has already been mentioned. You are right, putting in the bicarb without first dumping the acid was a mistake. Much easier to dissolve the bicarb and pour it into the empty battery. I couldn't tell what you finally filled the battery up with, but I will assume it was alum. I have tried this a number of times, and I have found that the battery usually settles in at around 11.5 volts. This raises concerns about it being compatible with a normal car charging system. Another issue is that the result depends on what was the state of charge when you emptied the battery. The plates change into different materials during charge and discharge. If you replace the electrolyte somewhere in mid-cycle, you are going to get unpredictable results. Anyway, I've never gotten a really satisfactory result for a car battery. Also, it is common for a battery to fail because one cell has gone bad. There is no hope for such a battery; nothing will help it unless you can take out that cell and remedy whatever killed it. But the alum trick does work. In fact, I found a 6 volt 4 amp hour battery that had been sitting around my place for at least 10 years. It was as dry as a bone, so I omitted the bicarb step and just filled it with alum solution. It sprang to life, and it is still working well in my Coleman camping lantern after 5 years. I wasn't sure what concentration the alum should be, so I kept dissolving it until it was settling out to the bottom. Saturated solution. Then I poured it out, carefully leaving the sediment behind, and added a little more water to make sure it stayed in solution. Btw, I use rain water for all these sorts of things. Works just as well as distilled, and much cheaper.
Another concern that's been mentioned is freezing, which might happen to alum solution. I can't say, because it doesn't freeze here in Australia. Sometimes I forget how lucky I am to live in a place with such nice weather.
over time the plates break up in the battery and the lead chunks fall to the bottom. they are very hard to get past the plates when dumping the acid out. also as the plates disintigrate the battery capacity decreases. try checking each cell with a hydrometer, see if one is shorted
another reader said there are battery chargers that pulse charge the battery designed specifically to bring sulfated batterys back from the dead. they charge at a high rate for short bursts
two things I was told never to do, one, add baking soda to a dead battery to fix it... two pour tap water into the batter when it needs water. you should use only distilled water
Oh and use a funnel and not splash acid all over the vehicle interior
or workbench
even with all those precautions I have never gotton a battery to come back to life!
@@rogerd4559 Well, I did. Watch my follow up video too. The battery lasted for a while. Try reading the description too if the process confused you. I could've definitely take more precaution, but it worked. This is not a bogus video by any means. I didn't even ever edit it because this became my highest viewed video.
@@myfamilyalbum1020 I am trying to get my mind around the concept of using a headlamp for a test light
wont the high current blow any fuses that connect to the divice being tested?
if you have a 5 or 10 amp fuse wont the headlamp draw 20 amps?
I am building a test light using a headlamp and I will solder the 12 gauge silicone insulated wirs on to reduce resistance then put test probes with screw on aligator clips. I want to place the headlamp in foam to prevent breakage if I should drop the test lamp but fear the lamp will melt the foam. any ideas?
maybe leave an airgap?
@@rogerd4559 I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with a headlamp as a test light. I'm missing a lot of variables to understand your project. If your light, which is a sort of fuse if you think about it, draws or can handle a certain amount of current, that's all it will draw, so you should match your fuses to your load to prevent an overload. However, if what you're trying to do is use a headlight for testing purposes, I don't advise it, especially with older vehicles because those bulbs draw more current than today's LED head lights. Just purchase the right tools for whatever you're testing. I wouldn't cheap out on electrical test equipment. No one sponsors me so if you want me to recommend some brand or tool that I have, let me know and I'll help without you worrying that I'm selling you some garbage.

He was being sarcastic
So when do you empty out the liquid you did not show that bit?
The battery acid or the twisted concoction that makes this battery work again? Most of this video was of me neutralizing the original acid, which I should've done outside of the battery. The new liquid stays in there to make it work.
I wonder why Ive seen other videos where all this black junk comes out when he dumps out the acid. then he adds the same dirty acid back in which I dont understand
so when you get the battery deal figured out try the audio I got nothing till almost the end so im just guessing what you are doing no explanation of what you did till you cranked the car at the end
is that when he switches to a good battery so you dont catch on it was a failure?
Will only work for old refillable batteries. New batteries are sealed and not refillable. So this method will not work on it. Pulse Charging will help to recondition a battery.
I laughed so hard!!! The dog is trying to warn him. But he just want to make an IED
I speak dog, and I'll translate for you. "Woof Woof"= why hasn't anyone fed me today??!!
here's several suggestions for getting a good resultDon't attempt to do this unless you are sure what you are doing - the acid can burn your skincheck the voltage first - there may be a kaput cell which would waste your time.Check the battery fluid.Try to fully charge the battery.(I read about these and more from Jons Mender Guide website )
I checked the voltage, and you're right. I probably should've included footage of testing the battery first. I did wear chemical resistant gloves, but a long sleeves probably would've been smarter. The car sits for long periods of time and I don't drive it much, so that battery had died for good. The voltage read was 0, I think. Plus it's at least six years old, and now it works and continues to hold charge. I'll be sure to check out that website since I forgot how I did all of this.
your fan belt is slipping i think or the car isnt charging it should shoot up far higher than thatwhen the car starts
could be his mind is slipping as well
Will that alum mix freeze in winter?

That's a very good question. I've heard that regular battery acid will freeze if the battery becomes fully discharged. I would like to know the answer too.
I like this question too. If you do not have an answer, I have a dead battery at home that I can use for another battery experiment.
good question. I think sulfuric acid will freeze in a battery if the battery is allowed to drop its charge to a low level and the temperature goes down to 15 F
Try it. let me know what you find out
is that battery still working??
+Nadeem Ahmed Yes is sure is, but no one drives this car too often, so it loses charge a lot. I've jumped it and recharged the battery slowly until it's ready and it still starts with no problem. Maybe I'll do an update video since I never got around to editing this video.......I swear I'll edit this one day, but I'm busy with work and editing my timing belt video right now.

I've been working on cars for about 15 years.......my goal was to see if this would work, and it did. So I shared how I did it. If you were so knowledgeable, you'd know this car clearly has an old starter and old alternator, which put a lot more strain on this freshly rejuvenated battery. You'd also know that this is what companies do and sell you the same battery again, they just use a different type of acid, sulfuric acid, which anyone can buy at a store for a few bucks. Watch my update video, and I encourage you to get your hands dirty cost effectively.........oh and choke and die you useless Internet troll.
Do not do this to any battery that you want to keep ever! Using baking soda will neutralize the acid that is supposed to be in there. It can be used to clean the outside of the battery, but don't ever let it get inside. This is a fake video that will have you ruin your battery permanently.
That was the point. The battery was ruined, and I had to neutralize the liquid to make it safe to handle so I could revive the battery. In retrospect, I should've dumped the acid out first, and then neutralized it, but I wasn't going to get it all anyway. Take a completely dead battery and see if it works for you, but be cautious because this is dangerous stuff, but hardly fake.
the point of the baking soda is to clean the plates and sediment in the bottom of the battery. you replace the solution with epsum salt mixture which is an elecrtolite which replaces the original acid mix. don't run off at the mouth unless you know what your talking about. the biggest mistake he made was he didn't test the individual cells to see if there is a dead short if there was it would not take or retain a charge
@@joescheller6680 Hey, how could I check each cell without opening the battery? I wouldn't mind trying this with another battery for a new video. hi whats alum
It's like salt. I can already see some nerd going, "Well, technically it's a potassium aluminum sulfake biogrammatical nucular monopeptide to the 5th power......" Read this article for more information:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alum
I believe it is aluminum sulphate I was told to use that in desulphating batteries and not baking soda
Usually, when you hear about alum it is in reference to potassium alum, which is the hydrated form of potassium aluminum sulfate and has the chemical formula KAl(SO4)2·12H2O. However, any of the compounds with the empirical formula AB(SO4)2·12H2O are considered to be an alum. Sometimes alum is seen in its crystalline form, although it is most often sold as a powder. Potassium alum is a fine white powder that you can find sold with kitchen spices or pickling ingredients. It is also sold as a large crystal as a "deodorant rock" for underarm use.

Worst advice I've EVER seen. You've just neutralized (that is, made useless) a battery that MIGHT have worked fine if you had just charged it! Baking powder is the "opposite" of battery acid; it's a "base", as opposed to an "acid" (that's why it's used for neutralizing spilled acid)...so it's completely NOT what you want to use to "strengthen" a failing battery. If you were going to do ANYTHING to the cells, it would be either add MORE acid or distilled water (NOTHING else!)...then charge it according to the charger's instructions.
You didn't watch the whole video....I don't blame you.
Yehhhh this will NOT work haha. Neutralizing ur battery acid is what u don't want to do. This will 100% kill your battery. You can use baking soda if u were to spill battery acid to clean it up so it don't eat a whole in a glove or something. If u really want to charge your dead battery place wrench or some other conductive material across both terminals.
