I remember the Reagan era well and liked him a lot. I didn't agree with everything he thought, but he loved his country and he was a great cheerleader type of leader. Certainly a nice move away from the despair and negativity of the 70s. When looking at Reagan I think it's important to understand why he was so popular, and well liked even among his political rivals.

Certainly Reagan was the most accomplished actor in the role of President, to begin with anyway, in stark contrast, say, to the one acting the role now. Generally it's safe to assume that most of them are there mostly as an act and, such is US society, it's the odd one who's for real, like Trump, who presents greatest danger.

Thomas Sowell: Tax Lies For The Gullible | Stock News ...
Thomas Sowell, a senior fellow at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, has written about how tax rates and tax revenues often move in opposite directions. He argues that tax cuts can lead to higher tax revenues, and that the phrase "tax cuts for the rich" is a misnomer.
Here are some of Sowell's arguments about tax cuts and tax revenues:
Tax cuts can increase tax revenues
Tax cuts can lead to higher tax revenues because they make it profitable for investors to invest outside of tax shelters. For example, in the 1920s, when the tax rate on the highest incomes was reduced from 73% to 24%, tax revenues increased substantially.
The Reagan administration's tax cuts led to higher revenues
Sowell says that the Reagan administration's tax cuts led to higher revenues than any previous administration.
The "trickle down" theory is a myth
Sowell argues that the "trickle down" theory is a myth because workers are paid first, and then profits flow upward later, if at all.

Ron is indeed a proud atheist, to his credit, but he is not gay.
