Learn Stainless Steel Joints & Welding with Stick welder (Possible)

  • So this video is all about welding stainless steel with a stick welder. The motive of the video is to tell you the right approach to the welding. The outcomes might not seem good onto the round pipe but hopefully, you understand the way to approach while building your project. The finishing process depends upon the progressively increasing grit size you use. I am not a professional welder but from the past year I made some projects related to stainless steel and improved a lot and I think if you wanted to do one or two household build then you can easily be carried away with a stick welder. Although Stick welder is not made for a material having that much thickness but if you pay some attention then you can do your few household projects as I do. Very good VIDEO, when welding stainless steel there is a chance for rust to start if you don't Passivate the weld area, do you Passivate or what do you do ? Thank you William Ambrogio Orange county, ca. Usa.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks William. Yeah I that's is definitely a necessary work to do, but I mostly skip that process everytime. If it's a tig weld then it might surely cause some porosity but in stick weld it never happened to me. So if it's a stick weld then you really don't need to clean it with acetone or some other chemicals or sometimes flap disk. If it looks clean to naked eyes just go on. But in tig passivation is necessary. Thanks for being here :)

      You need stainless steel electrode according to the material grade. Usually SS308L works on both ss202 to ss308 grade. The ss347 works on rest of the grade. There are many others also but yeah you need different electrode.

      @@ambroscustom thank buddy for the info. Because i have plan to buy a welding machine portable, which machine you recomend

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brother frankly said I himself recently bought a Chinese AC DC tig welding machine. If you have a budget then go with everlast. Quite affordable compared to Miller and esab. Otherwise to me brand or company never matters only feature matters. If you are willing to to stainless work then go with tig and having pulse feature and also ac-dc, so that you are able to weld on aluminium if you have some work. Try to go with higher ampere machine. 250 or 300 is best for diy and normal house hold projects made with pipes and plates upto 10-12mm. So my suggestion is that try to go with features rather than brand. Just look at branded machines and there features and you will easily able to find in local brands or Chinese brands.

      If the work isn't too much than its not necessary. But if you do alot of stainless steel work then go with tig. It saves your alot of time in finishing. But again it comes to your skill, although tig is much easy compare to stick welding, but sometimes on the site job it's not always feasible to carry a tig machine along with you because of so much accessories, so it's good to have some hands-on practice with stick welder, so that your work never stops.

    I have purchase a 4 in 1 welding machine .it has arch ,tig,MiG with gas and MiG gasless.
    Which mode you recommend me to learn and use for stainless steel welding?do you think MiG gasless will be better than tig?

      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think tig is far better than mig. It's good if have pulse tig option . But if not no worry tig is still better option to go with, it saves alot of finishing time compared to mig or stick.

      As far as I know MiG is the latest technology of welding it came after tig as I have been told , and Tig I have told it needs to replace tips and more costly. strange Tig is better than MiG .anyway I will take your advice.i will start to learn Tig .thanks

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It might be true but I personally preferred tig, surely mig is much easy to learn than tig but I go with tig if its comes to stainless. But you have both of them so you can easily compare both of them and find what suits best to your need I think. Good luck

      I think that’s best ideal , I will try to use both of them and decide which I will fill comfortable.thank you for your suggestions and ideals.

      Sorry I have got this information from other site they compare Tig vs MiG it may be useful :
      MiG vs Tig welder:
      While MIG and TIG both have different strengths and weaknesses, there is no one process better than the other; they are both used for different purposes.
      MIG welding is a good option when low-cost, fast welding on materials like steel and aluminum is needed. It can run tidy stainless steel welds but is primarily used for steel and aluminum.
      TIG welding creates high-quality welds that are expensive and slow. You typically TIG stainless steel and aluminum projects. It’s a difficult procedure to learn, but once mastered, it’s considered the most satisfying weld to perform. This is because of its accuracy, deep penetration, and highly attractive looks.

    So, 304 is more good if i used this stainless as my railing? And what is the thickness of atainless pipe more good for railings? Thank you so much sir.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear they didn't came in too much thickness. Usually around 2-2.30 mm thickness which I used. Lower than this cause issues like blow holes and warpage much faster with stick welder.It good to use vernier caliper to measure thickness. I always use whenever I purchase materials. It helps alot and yes 304 is best for railings.

    which welding machine is suitable for stainless steel.... ac or dc welding machine

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear I always uses a dc welding, never used an ac but most commonly dc is used as its more safer than the ac one. But the much better result you are going to get with tig welder compared to a stick. If I have to choose between tig and stick I go with tig just because on stainless-steel you have to do less grinding and finishing work.

    Good day sir, can I ask you about the pure stailess. When testing the stainless green to transparent is 3 0 4 and testing green to red is 2 0 2. Which ot thet two stainless is good and pure stainless Sir? Thank you so much.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear it's not about the purity it's about the chrome content in the stainless the higher the number is higher the chrome content and that is much resistive to moisture. 304 is much much better than 202.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's 60amps with 2.4 mm electrode. But I recommend you to play with the settings. I have some electrodes which works beautifully at 52-55 amps on 16 gauge and some at 60 amps. So this is also depend upon the manufacturer and type of coating they used.

      Dear if you really wanted to do just stainless steel fabrication go with tig welder either weldpro or everlast or any good quality IGBT Ac-Dc welder. This video is for those who have little bit of stainless work to do and I showed to do it with stick welder. Highly recommend to get TIG welding. Much cleaner and less grinding work needs to be done.

    Your skill level is high, for stick welding thin S S pipe, is hard to do. What electrode are you using, 308, 309, or ?, 3/32"?, amps 50, 60 ? Thanks William. GREAT VIDEO.
    From Long Beach, California.

    • @ambroscustom
      @ambroscustom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the compliment William. I am using ss308 , 2.5 mm rod thick and for the current starting from 1.5 mm I use 60amps and from there after with increase in wall thickness I usually increases the amps from 5-7 amps. But one thing you have to notice that I am using this setting with slightly fast hand movements. The main thing is how much time you stay onto the metal surface with the electrode at a particular spot. Too much time and there is a big hole, less time you stay it will not able to fuse the material properly. So beside the current settings it's also depends upon the hand movements. Good luck:)

      Use stainless rod but make sure to clean the surface of iron pipe. Any rusted are can cause issues like cavity and bubbles. So clean the surface and use stainless rod.
