  • Food processing has proved essential for our survival, but what are Ultra-Processed Foods and why are researchers worried that we might be consuming too much of them?
‘Ultra-processed foods’ is a term coined by the NOVA food classification system. This system categorises food into four groups, with ultra-processed foods (UPFs) taking the final spot.
Many epidemiological studies- so studies looking at large populations- showed associations between high consumption of UPF and ill health - not just obesity, but also cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression and anxiety, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, fatty liver disease, kidney disease, type 2 diabetes and all-cause mortality.
The big breakthrough came in 2019, when a team of researchers at the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) ran a randomised-controlled trial - the gold standard of evidence gathering which included 20 participants and they showed how UPFS led people to overeat.
Exactly how Ultra-processed foods might cause ill health is still being untangled however a few potential explanations are being brought forward.

Great video! I wish people were more aware of the foods they eat. My family and I eat a mainly whole foods diet now and we are all healthier than we’ve ever been.
My husband lost 95 lbs and so far I’ve lost 42 lbs and reversed my diabetes and high blood pressure.
I’ve been passionate about health and nutrition for the past year and learning about proper nutrition is eye opening. I didn’t realize how much “fake” foods we are consuming.
Many people in our family think we are “extreme” because we don’t eat ultra processed foods. 😢 It’s sad that they don’t understand the dangers of UPF.

Great video presentation. Love that you cited your sources to many people don’t cite them and I’m so glad to see someone finally do it.

Nice video story! It is interesting to see how processing food has become a commodity rather then a necessity nowadays. Looking forward to you next video

This was a nice, clear, and to-the-point presentation on the issues here. I'm an oldster who wrestles with weight and diet, so, I've had identifiable cycles. It is absolutely noticeable to me that if I'm eating ultra-processed foods it negatively effects how I feel physically and psychologically and if I eat just regular fruits and vegetables and so on I feel better and more sated. However... there is also a weird dynamic of what tastes good, what I desire and so on. Eating "clean" foods for a couple weeks will change my palate such that I like it, and on the other hand if I start eating the processed foods that is then what I want, if any of that makes sense.

While there are many problems with ultra processed foods, and quite possibly a mismatch in what your body is expecting vs what it's getting, but there isn't evidence that artificial sweeteners increases insulin. Far too many people check their blood glucose or wear continuous glucose monitors and if insulin were being released there would be a drop in glucose and that just doesn't happen.

I made a separate video on continuous glucose monitors as you are right- interest in these has increased among healthy individuals! I go through the reasoning behind it as well as expert opinions from different fields with regards to them! Let me know your thoughts!
