I would guess they’d be more tactility in the abdomen and chest, but since I’m in the planning stages of a home theater build, it’d be useful information for me.

I have a small theater and near field is not an option so I added 6 Buttkickers on 2 DJ amplifiers and it feels just right along with 2 pb16s , I wish I had the room for bigger subs .
Great video! Question...If your front 2 subs are ported, should the subs you choose for nearfield be ported as well? Also, should they be the same size as your main subs you already have? I have 2 12's in the front of my room.
It is always easier to integrate identical subwoofers. It isn't impossible to integrate different enclosures styles (ported/sealed), but it does take more work and most likely a minidsp. The same thing goes for different size drivers etc. This is assuming you want proper integration with a flat response.
Mixing ported and sealed can introduce some problems at the port tuning. It can be done, but the only way to do it well would be to EQ them using something like a Minidsp.
Not really. The reason being is that nearfield really neuters the low end your would experience in your seat. If you don't care about the low end though, going nearfield with 1 subwoofer would still shake your chair and make it feel like you have 8 subs in the room haha.
@@SpecOfTech I appreciate the input!! Also, do you have any plans on reviewing the Klipsch 1600, I hear it’s pretty competitive at its price point, especially when it goes on sale and would love to hear your thoughts.
@@usmankhalid990 It would depend on the subwoofer and its capabilities. You'd have to measure and see. But yes, most effect would be around 30-40hz and below.
You just made a comment that blew my mind about the near field drawback #1 which you lose low end frequencies when near field. Why in the world is that? I’m experiencing that same issue with my PSA TV2112M dual subs behind my theater seats. I also have dual PB16 Ultras at front of theater. Sounds like the PB16 subs dig wayy lower thab my dual PSA sub which boggles my mind. The PSA subs are way more powerful and go down to 10Hz but i get mostly mid bass from the PSA Subs. Can you please tell me why this is before I lose my mind lol. I thought something was wrong with the subs or better yet, I was doing something terribly wrong. Please help me understand Thank you brother
I don't fully understand it myself, but I believe it has to do with room gain. When your subwoofer is placed behind your seating and away from boundaries (walls), you lose out on room gain. If it is placed behind your seating, their could also be some absorption happening, which will exaggerate the effect.
It would also greatly be dependent on the room. Each room has different room modes, so best placement would be to measure with REW and find which placement gives the best response.
Its so funny how you made this video! Yesterday for shits and giggles I put 2 truck boxes with car subs in them and ran them to a crown xls1002. Wow I was inmazed of the difference it made started watching star wars again and I was floored. I also have 2 pb1000 up front and auro bass shakers in my seats I'm still up in the air about how I feel about the bass shakers because they don't go down in hz as low as the buttkicker one do
You can do whatever you want really haha. It isn’t ideal to have different brands or different sizes of subwoofers, but with some tweaking you can make it work. I would recommend the use of a Minidsp and REW (Room Eq Wizard) to integrate them though.
Hey man! I'm pretty new to nearfield, so I was wondering where the line in cables get plugged into. Because if some subs come with their own amp plates, if my avr already has 2 subs plugged in, where would the nearfields go? Thanks! Love the channel 🤙
Hey man, thanks for watching. If your subwoofers have a line in and a line out, then you could daisy chain the subwoofers together. If they do not, you can use an RCA splitter like the one in this link amzn.to/3GrVOCQ. Keep in mind that your room calibration software will treat the subwoofers that are tied together on the splitter, or daisy chained together as 1 subwoofer.
I ended up upgrading from my V3600i to a PSA T-18 which is 3 x 18" sealed unit with 6000watt amp. It's better in terms of clarity and punch as well being far more musical but I was surprised I hit a sealing with movies so quickly. I also don't feel it gets as low as the vented V3600i did which is strange since the T-18 is rated to go lower. The windows would rattle at 12Hz with the V3600i but I don't hear them with the T-18 which also feels less tactile as a result. I run the T-18 near-field between two recliners, but yeah, just not getting that teeth-rattling sensation that the V3600i gave (although I was left wanting there too!). Maybe a second T-18 will fix it?? I don't really want to go through the cost (and hassle) and getting another one of those beasts in the cinema if it's not going to give me what I'm after tho...but surely 6 x 18"s with 12,000 watts should do the trick!?
My first question is, have you done much to optimize the one that you do have? Have you ran REW sweeps, played with gain, played with placement etc? Have you talked to Tom about getting the most out of that subwoofer? If you have done those things, here is my advice and what I would personally do. If you are not happy with 1 of them and you feel it is lacking, I wouldn't buy another. You are just setting yourself up to be doubly disappointed lol. Adding a second will definitely add to the overall DB in the room and will smooth out the response etc. But if you have 1 near field and it isn't blurring your vision, you may want to look at upgrading into a different subwoofer, and yes maybe you need to look at ported if that was more impressive to you. Looking at the charts on PSA, the T18 seems to peak at the midbass frequencies. I think you are right, what you may be lacking is a more powerful low end. It doesn't look like the T18 is even for sale anymore. My suggestion is to take a look at the JTR offerings, specifically the JTR CAP4000. They are well known for their powerful output, especially in the low end. My dual PSATV3612's have some pretty great low end and some awesome mid bass, but the CAP4000 has quite a bit more. As it should since it is quite a bit more $$ than my TV3612's. Another one to look at would be the little brother of the CAP4000, the CAP2400. If you don't feel like going the sub route, maybe look at some transducers or the boss platform. Cheers man, and good luck.

I don't disagree at all, but I'll play devils advocate and put a vote to bass shakers as a viable option. In my experience, they give the same or even better effect at a typically lower cost. I have one 18" Aura 1808 sub (DIY Wilson Audio sub) (yes it's ancient but still very near top end sub). That was great but I wanted more, so I added two mid-lower end 15" subs from Parts express. I was getting good room pressurization, but as you mention in you video, when I turned up the subs to get good tactile feel, the bass was unbalanced and overpowering when it shouldn't be. I removed the two low end 15"s and I added two Clark Synthesis TST209 shakers, one on each end of my couch and two TST239 shakers, one on each of two recliners. I wired them series parrallel to a 350watt@4ohm dedicated subwoofer amp. I adjusted the crossover and amp level so that now, even at modest listening levels I get a subtle tactile effect which is nice, you don't have to have the volume turned up loud at all to enjoy the experience. And, well,, the REAL experience is when watching action movies of coarse and you get the full effect at reference sound levels, and the 350W amp seems to be plenty. Plus,, they're virtually unseen so if you're into a minimalistic look, they're great, as well as they have a WAF of 9.5 out of 10. The only complaint she could possibly have is that you spent some $$ on it.
Absolutely, bass shakers/transducers is a great option as well for tactile bass. A near field subwoofer is just a way to increase the bass you feel and tactile response without purchasing anything additional, assuming you already own a subwoofer or 2 ;). Sounds like a pretty sweet setup brother! Those are definitely some strong arguments for the transducer route. I have considered going with a boss platform as well. But right now my PSA TV3612 behind my MLP provides amazing tactile response, and just like you, I do get some tactile feel even at low volume. Regardless how you get that tactile response at low volume it definitely helps with immersion when watching movies or playing games at low volume. Once you go tactile you can't turn back lol. @@SpecOfTech I was an AT (Avionics Tech) in the Navy, repaired avionics and did some redesign recommendations for the F-14 avionics. Now I design industrial control systems. Not as impressive as it sounds though. A bunch of power supplies, relays and conveyor controls that interface to a computer that some one else writes the software for. I use Ohms law a lot and read tons of specs, kinda boring really at this stage in my life. I was a lot more into speaker design and audio when I was younger, I did a couple car audio sound offs back in the early 80's (back when a little guy with a little knowledge and engineering could beat the guys spending big money) but I'm slowly getting back into it. This may be my retirement hobby in a few years. With that said, over the years, I have always kept a decent sound system in my home and cars.
@@philrc1 Sounds like a pretty amazing life and career my man. Working on jets is a lot cooler than MANY other jobs out there lol. Those car audio SPL competitions are crazy lol. They look like a lot of fun too. I used to have system in my car, but NOTHING like you and those SPL guys.
Thanks for watching and for the comment, have a good one my friend.
Nice video, I'm going to have to try this!
Let me know what you think after you have tried it.
Spec Of Tech for sure, hopefully this weekend
Spec Of Tech I’ve been running it behind my main sitting position for about 2 weeks and love the tactile feeling but the sound is not quite as good as my previous placement up front.
@@rhealbenoit6993 Yes you do lose some frequency response for sure. That is why it is ideal to have 2 subs for this type of set up as well. One to produce the sound and one for some sound and tactile. At least you tried it :).
Cool, great video👌
I have dual tv36ipal behind the coutch. I want one in front, and the Only place is under tv. Its Pretty good bass for the moment
That must be amazing, lots of tactile response I am sure!
Great vid to me as I am the only one watching , listening , oh and feeeling .
Great for one MLP .
but imagine both subwoofers and buttkickers pbly fly off the seat lol
lol, near field sub, butt kickers AND a Boss platform. You wouldn't be able to see the movie, just some colorful blur lol.
Sounds familiar. 🤔
I don’t think you said “Tactile” enough 🤦♂️
When dealing with tactility, you must provide a tactile presentation for those wondering about tactile-ness. Only then, does the word tactile actually become tactile, to the point where one can almost feel how tactile the tactility has become.
Great Tactile response.
