I wish more people understood correlation vs causation. Even if that champagne study was using people and not rats, that wouldn't prove anything about champagne's health benefits. It could only be proving that people who drink champagne more often are wealthier and have better access to healthcare. Science gives us a spectrum of answers ranging in probability from raw correlation at the bottom rung all the way to repeatedly and comprehensively verified theory.
That's why science uses experimentation and not just observation. An observation study can only determine correlation; a properly controlled experiment can imply a cause and effect relationship. What most people don't want to understand is that scientific conclusions are probability statements based on sample sizes, replication frequency, and measurement precision. If you see or hear about the result of a scientific study, and it doesn't include information about sample size, margin of error, or confidence level - it is worthless, meaningless, and you would be better informed if you didn't learn about it.
Actually looking for causation is too inconvenient. Most people don't want to spend money and time on it when the results aren't guaranteed. They'd rather mislead laypeople by giving them the false instant gratification of correlations and make bank on less effort.
You actually have books that show the dumbest graphs, mostly based on correlation. Those are hilarious. Things like "if you have a beard, you're more likely to be hit by blue cars" and other conclusion like that.

Unsolicited advice based on my personal experience as an Epileptic: During your next apointment with your primary care doctor, ask them to refer you to an Epileptologist (basically they're neurologists that specifically focus on treating seizure disorders and go through extra training). If you can, ask for one who is younger and/or associated with a well-known university. There is still a ton that we don't know about the human brain and younger doctors tend to be more open minded and havent had their curiosity and optimism beaten out of them by life yet. If you can't, then keep an eye out for the psychogenic diagnosis. While it can be a legitimate diagnosis a lot of doctors will use it as a catch-all.
Fellow epileptic and couldn’t agree more. It’s not even that there isn’t research, it’s that there are so many blind spots when it comes to it and some studies are outdated. There are many minorities in which epilepsy is understudied, several comorbidities that are poorly researched, so many side effects from medications that are reported on that then take ages to be followed up through research. In the age of social media I’ve seen so much misinformation about epilepsy be spread like wildfire, we do need more research and better science communication to fight that aside from the obvious benefit of improving care for us epileptic folks.
