Absolutely hate how the opening line could be mistaken for current events a decade later.
You look like such a adorable princess...
I was soooo confused
I thought this was.
Ukraine is sliding into anarchy, the Gaza ceasefire is tenuous... oof.
I only realized this was a decade-old episode when the segment about nuclear weapons started to feel like I've seen it already.
HBO, please put the original air date in the description. ⭐️
Yessssss I looked so hard for that and it was nowhere!! gah!
Hi, IMDB says it aired on Sun.,July 27,2014. So, almost 10 years ago.
I Googled it....season 1 started in 2014
I noticed there have been several Donald trump jokes and this is long before the he came to power.
@@southsirenThat's because he's always been an attention whore.
I thought he looked young
Who else has HBO Max but watches all these on TH-cam?
I just have HBO for house of dragon. Johnny Ollie lives on my yt feed for free lol

Yea, why do we do this?
Had to double check since Jon looks younger and then remembered that they're releasing the full library here. Excellent!
I was just thinking to myself.... "wait.... why does he look... so young..... "
Thank you! I thought I was seeing things lol
So is it old?
This has to be old -- look at his teeth. He had those points-and-gaps fixed years ago.
@satyamsingh4653 Yes. They announced they're releasing season 1 on TH-cam, with more years coming.
He started talking about war in Gaza I thought this was recent, then I realized it could be anytime in human history
Not really, no. All this took off in 1948
Today in the news: tensions in the Middle East
Only if human history began in 1948, sure.

Gaza is never out of the headlines😂😂
Hahahaha!
It does, John never talks about Ukraine now. Western leftists are no longer interested, because they can't blame it on the west.
War. War never changes.
This video was from nearly 10 years ago!
History really does repeat itself
lol here on YT.
Idk if it’s so much repeating itself as much as it’s always been like that.
I just hope we do not have the same fate as those geckos.

It could be any point in the last decade and it would still be 100% accurate. 😊
@@D64nz Any point since 2010; I don't know history before that but I suspect that the Ukraine has been in trouble for decades, pulled by Western money and Russian loyalty.
Intimidation, bribing and eventually military invasion is not loyalty. 2014 is the year russia invaded Ukraine for the first time if you forgot @@daledewar
Former USAF nuclear weapons technician, here. I think about them all the time. People are clueless as to their power and lasting effects. And if you think we're doing a poor job of maintaining them; you should see how Russia operates.
The point isn't "are we better than Russia" we all know Russia is the bottom of the barrel. If you're being compared to RUSSIA of all places about anything, things are seriously wrong!
@myfaceismyshield5963 I feel that he meant the scary part is that Russia has more nuclear weapons, and is doing a worse job with maintaining their stuff.

And this is why Professor/Physicist Brian Cox has made the comment that people's biggest fear should not be war, but stupidity. Great show John!!!!!!
"Ukraine is sliding into anarchy, the Gaza ceasefire is tenuous..." Oh, this is _old._
I know John wont see this but id love to hear his thoughts on how the topics he covered 10 years ago are still relevant. I know its not just me but its incredibly discouraging that it feel like nothing changes, that it feels like a miracle that his show exists at all with corporate consolidation and silencing of journalists, it feels like no matter how much I may want change, in another 20 years Columbia will be silencing another humanitarian protest :c
That guy 100% still thinks those two are from India. Totally over his head lol.
Interesting to see how a decade ago, both Gaza and Ukrain are headline news at the same time... Wild.
Somebody PLEASE make a 3 hour analysis/retrospective/review of every season of the show🤩
Need airdate on every episode now
Or we can just assume the date based on the amount of grey hair on John’s head
someone should make an algorithm to derive that! 😅
I’m amazed at how relevant this is currently.
Not sure why HBO is re-uploading episodes but I'm all for it.
I'm assuming they realized they could get AdSense revenue for basically no cost, it's easier to find it here than on DailyMotion or Vimeo or whatever (and better SEO)
ETA: heck they've made ten bucks from this video already, pays for itself
This is the release of the season 1 playlist; they’re archiving the episodes
I think they're doing this because John is now in jail in Thailand. Or Denmark. Or the Netherlands. Or in some other country where he said something bad about them. Basically, this is a new version of "Where in the World is Waldo?" starring John. ;)
They never upload full episodes that are recent which sucks

@@STSWB5SG1FANSadly, no. But at least they didn't starve to death-they froze.
Someone in the audience really liked that 'Almost-gedon' joke.
using obsolete tech like big floppies is actually a security feature now... nobody can hack them without being physically on site.
LOL. No, a USB stick will do the same dude... it also requires physical interaction with the actual pc. LOL
@@Jinkypigs A floppy disk is made with 7 very basic simple components. Its consists of a magnetic disk, shutter, spring, hub, paper rings, write-protect tab and a plastic flap. A USB drive consists of a motherboard, memory chips, controller chip, capacitors, resistors, crystal oscillators and however many other components a manufacturer decides to put on it. A floppy disk can easily be repaired without losing any of the stored data. A USB drive can easily have one of many components fail which would result in all data being lost.
He was also referring to obsolete tech in general and that was just one example. I think the main point he was getting at is modern day hackers are born into the world of high speed internet and probably have not even used a operating system as old as Windows XP let alone the operating systems our nuclear silos are using from the 70s. Using old tech is a safety features because there is not many people in todays world that would know how to hack it or even use it for that matter. Those old systems are strictly offline and locally networked whereas modern military systems are networked through military satellites etc and are vulnerable to potential attacks.
Older systems are also way more reliable and simple which makes them easier to maintain and keep running. The reason they still use a computer thats 50 years old is in contrast by the fact its 50 years old and it still works. Go buy a modern laptop from best buy and tell me if it still works 50 years later. As the old saying goes if its not broke dont fix it. Its just like how the USA was using Russian Soyuz capsules to get to and from the international space station for decades and only up until recently did they start using spacex etc to shuttle astronauts to the space station. They did that for the exact same reason, The Soyuz ran off of computers from the 70s and they never updated it because why update something and make it more complicated and unreliable when it works perfectly fine and has had nearly a 100% success rate. Its been through all the testing, they know how it works and how to fix any issues. Why slap in a modern computer system that has 100x more components that can fail and a less likely chance that the average technician can fix it?
I love being reminded of the nuclear sword of Damocles hovering over all our heads.
John Oliver delivering the only show i don't have to watch on 2x

My father's best friend died in an explosion in Germany in the 80s from a Pershing missile. Thank God it wasn't armed and thank God for that man he saved lots of life's that day including my father's since he closed the blast doors containing the explosion......I've always wondered if Germany knows they almost had a nuclear explosion in their country? Hate to break it to you, but I was born in the year of the Arab-Isreali war and it hasn't stopped since.
I remember watching this with my dad the back in the day.
One thing to note: they still use the old style computers on purpose.
The tech is so old its incompatible with modern systems, meaning its all but impossible to hack, and they require physical access to specific data disks
In fact, 5' flopy disks are the most advanced. Most use punch cards.

John Oliver is so funny. Arguably the funniest late night show host ever.
One thing of note about old nuclear weapons technology. It being so old running on a custom operating system and floppies can actually make them more secure as it can make it harder to hack or disrupt.
