- What is a nepenthes basal shoot and how to remove it?
What to do with this tropical pitcher plant "offshoot"?
The 1st step is to locate it to avoid destroying it by cutting a leaf.
But afterwards, we have to decide whether to leave it in the pot, or we separate it from the mother plant.
I decided to cut it, to have later another plant to sell/trade and I will show you how.

Why this channel?
I plan to show you how other nepenthes growers from around the world grow their plants on their windowsill.
If you are interested and want to show us your plants, contact me so that I can arrange an interview.
(All you need is a recent smartphone and a good WiFi, I'll take care of the software).

Happy growing everyone!
Remy.
Hi Remy, thanks for your videos very helpful, what would be the best time or season to propagate basals? I am at northeast of Mexico by the way so temperature reaches about 40℃ in summer and will drop a little bit about 8℃, some times ~0℃, in winter.
The best time is any time, as long as it's gentle. For example on my windowsill, winter is quite cold and summer quite hot. So I would do it in the middle, the idea is to make is easy for the plant. But is you grow them in a place where it's always good like a terrarium, anytime is good.
Just make sure it's big enough. The size of the "big" basal I cutted is good.
Thanks Remy your videos have helped me a lot with my plant(s) i decided to wait a bit loner with my basal as they are still pretty small
Glad I could help
This video is for separating basals on small plants. As Domonick Gravine (of Redleaf Exotics) said: If you have a large plant that makes a vine (and therefore you don't want to collect the pollen) then you can cut the main vine and leave the basal in the pot. Either way, you will have cuttings and the basal will be much more vigorous.
Really helpful video as I am fairly new to growing nepenthes and enjoy propagating my plants whenever I can. Thanks so much!
Glad it helps!
Thanks. I enjoy your vids. This one answered a question I had. Happy growing!
Glad to help!
Thanks for the video!
Do you think you could do a video on vining plants next? There are 3 main questions I'm having a hard time finding answers to:
1. When is a Nepenthes considered adult and vining? What does it look like and when should I start seeing "upper" pitchers?
2. Is there a minimum size of pot that I should have my Nep in if I want it to grow big and start vining?
3. Is it recommended to provide anchor points for the tendrils to wrap around? Does it help the plant grow bigger? What's the easiest way to provide anchor points for windowsill growers?
Haha It's nice to see all these questions, especially since the answers will interest many.
I'll add them to my list then ;)
Perfect timing! I have a bunch of basal shoots I need to separate, so this was very helpful!
Me too!! My exact comment.
Do you help the small cuttings if you cut off the pitcher?
Yes, cuttings should focus on roots for faster growth.
This gives me some hope for the small cutting i'm trying to root.
Keep it warm with good light and that should be good.
Il do a follow up of the basal later.
Thanks for sharing Remy ;)
Thank you!
Should the basals be put in lower light or regular light is fine
Regular light. Really the same as the mother plant ;)
@@WindowsillNepenthes thank you 😊
Just got through separating my basil’s
You separated your basals? How did it go?
Any uodates on the basal shoots?
I'll update you on the LIVE I'll do next month :)
Do you need to put a stick in the moss of a pitcher plant to have it grow upwards or will it grow a stalk naturally upwards
Good question. Most of the species will grow up, but some species like n. veitchii (and related) will tend to crawl on the floor.
Hey I have a question, are there any downsides to not removing basal shoots?
Not really. It will simply be a second plant :)
@@WindowsillNepenthes awesome thanks for the fast reply
I just got started with pitcher plants love it! I have 1 sarracenia, some Nepenthes. I bought about 5 of these in this video what type of plant its called? I better check if have some baby basal's lol
The plant I cutted the basal from is Nepenthes Gaya :)
Great video, do you recommend bagging them for a month or so?
Yes, having a good humidity help. If you grow them already in a terrarium/tent tiy shiykdn't need it. ;)
Thanks for making this video, it was very informative! Also, I have a question, last summer, I overwatered (I think it was overwatering, it could have been something else) my nepenthes and the “main” plant died, however, two basil shoots survived! I’m just wondering if those two shoots will ever grow more basil shoots themselves, or if they can seed.
Thanks :)
They are true basals, no chance it was seeds except if you saw the seeds yourself ;)
And yes, overtime, they will get bigger and create their own basals.
@@WindowsillNepenthes thank you very much for responding, and, follow up question: can the basil shoots ever grow seeds?
@@d.s.3408 the basal is a regular plant, it will grow and become adult, grow flowers, and give seeds (if it's a female plant, a male plant will give pollen).
I noticed you didn't use any rooting solution. Any reason why?
It's because this is not required for basal as long as there is leaves.
But maybe it would speed up the roots?
I never tried. Did you?
@@WindowsillNepenthes I've only done cuttings. I do have some basals I'm thinking of trying. Thanks, I enjoy your videos, very informative.
@@slmjm54 Well, if you can, take cuttings out of the vine and let the basal grow, it will produce bigger pitchers ;)
@@WindowsillNepenthes the vine or the basal?
@@BlaisZeroni cut the vine if you want cuttings and strong basals. If you want seeds cut the basals ;)
Nice video! My Rebecca Soper has grown a lot of growing points and it's overgrowing my other plants, so for sure i will try this :)
Just a little question, is there like some condition that make Nepenthes to grow basal shoots? Something like the growing conditions or the age of the plant? I'm not sure if a young Nepenthes can grow basal shoots, or only an adult one 🤔
To motivate a nepenthes to grow basal shot, some people say that if the main stem isn't strait but grow horizontal or down, it may help.
But I have to test that.
Hi Rémy, I was wondering: you put dead sphagnum when potting and it shows some nice green and live sphagnum a month after. Did the sphagnum grow back or did you add live sphagnum on top after potting?
You are right, I top the substrate with live sphagnum :)
Not mandatory but I believe it looks better.
I cant separate it its in spaghnum moss its roots are intertwined. Is it ok to leave it? My nepenthes is huge but its leaning to the side is it because of the basal shoots?
Yes it's fine you can leave it 🙂
I repotted my small bloody mary recently and left the 5 basals on it as I didn’t know if they where too small still. Now the main plant is ok but the basals are dying back, is that common? Should I have taken them off? The main plant isn’t even as tall as the length of my hand
Never heard of basal dying... are you sure it's not something else?
Maybe ask on the international carnivorous plant society group?
What about LEAVING them? Is there any risk/harm to my plant? Also, how BIG is too big to cut a basal shoot? Or will my basal with 3" leaves and open pitchers not fare well if I cut him off now?
For me I cut the basal when the plant's leaf-span is 3+ inches. And it's never too late for cutting a basal as it becomes like making a regular cutting.
Also! What about rooting hormone? I know that fertilizer will kill it, but what about a rooting hormone like Promix Stim-Root?
I don't know yet, but I will do a video about rooting paste and rooting gel later this year ;)
Spotted 2 Basal shoots in my nephentes Pot, now i have 3 plants 🫶🏼🫣😂🇩🇪👋🏼
how are they doing? Can you make an updated video ? it has been about 6 months, right?
Ok! I'll do an update soon :)
So if I want lots of baby nepenthes, I just have to feed them after midnight, right? :p
Haha you can try ;) But take care...
I just cut off 5 basal shoots from my Gaya. Pray for me LOL
Give them good light and it should be fine 🙂
i think u remove those basals too early.
I only planned to remove the one basal that I was seeing... but during the unpotting, I discovered 2 other.
And I didn't want to redo that same process in 3 months.
But you are right, the medium one and the small one are too small.
