  • Dan Landrum and Stephen Humphries discuss things we now know about playing hammered dulcimer that we wish we had known when we began.
The topics are the kinds of things you can learn on www.dulcimerschool.com

I agree with you that difficulty and technicality is not what makes music enjoyable to listen to. That was what I was attempting to support in a previous comment. What is musical is for an entire different discussion, but I don't want to hijack this comment thread. Instead, some things that are technically difficult create 'more options' of variety, allowing the player to express themselves differently through their music.
My personal motto is learn the technical, then forget it and play music.

    Bill,
Sorry about not explaining myself. By "other bodies of knowledge" I mean lots of method books going back for many years where one player studies the work and writings of another and then learns that method, adds to it, passes it on, etc., e.g. the hundreds of method books for piano, fretted instruments, fretless instruments, wind instruments, etc.
As to why you sold 100 thousand albums: Your music is GREAT. You're a pioneer, and I deeply admire and respect your work. I hope that's clear.

I didn't intend my statement to be directed at anything you said or didn't say. Instead was painting a picture to support the distinction. I'm not going to pick this apart anymore. My intent is simply this: support that there are things on the hammer dulcimer that are simple and other things that are difficult. I am in support of efforts that are focused on continued understanding, education, cultivation, and growth of the hammer dulcimer.

Bill, I understand what you're saying, but I don't see knowing the note names as theory. Also, I'm certainly coming from my own viewpoint: these are things I wish I had learned earlier because I see how much easier it would have been to learn along the way. The instruments are just so much more fun to play and so nonstandard as far as referencing other bodies of knowledge that it makes mastering them a little more difficult.
