I did this passage in 2019. We had huge, lumpy, confused seas with waves coming from every conceivable direction. Simply going to the toilet was an ordeal and trying to sleep was almost impossible. But when we got to Madeira we were proud of ourselves and forgot the discomfort quite quickly !!

Exactly! WHY? guess it takes suffering to appreciate the joys even more :)
