Why "Butterfly" Is Mariah Carey's BEST Album | Flying to Freedom (Part 2/2)

- In part one of this series, we discussed the rocky development of Mariah Carey’s fifth studio album “Daydream” but also why it earned the success it did. If you’d like to dive into that deeper, be sure to check out the video. But as a brief summation, Mariah was at the hands of a label who didn’t believe in her artistic vision and a controlling husband.
After being given label leniency, Mariah pushed forward into hip-hop and R&B which rubbed Columbia Records and her husband the wrong way, as it was too differentiated from what she had put out.
Though after the success of “Daydream” nationally and across the globe, it’s clear Mariah knew what she was doing. We ended the video on Mariah’s divorce from Tommy Mottola which brings us to this video.
After divorcing her ex husband, the rollercoaster didn’t stop for Mariah. She was now at the mercy of critics who had a lot to say about her image, sound and public relationships. Let’s pick up right where we left off in Part 1 where Mariah leaves Tommy Mottola, and get into the development of “Butterfly”.
As mentioned in my last video, Mariah herself at one point has considered “Butterfly” her magnum opus, which was stated in 2009 in the booklet for her album “Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel”. I consider both Daydream and Butterfly to be her magnum opus’, but for very different reasons. Briefly- Daydream is her great effort for the general public. Probably her three strongest singles are present and are all historic and beautiful. One Sweet day with its chart success, Fantasy becoming basically the most sought after pop formula, and Always Be My Baby being a song that everyone and their mother loves. Always Be My Baby is also her first work with Jermaine Dupri and Manuel Seal, who 10 years later would compose We Belong Together as a team. The album cuts and lesser known singles are also incredible and she covers a range of genres, not just hip hop and r&b.
Butterfly is simply her magnum opus because of the storytelling and sheer creativity. There’s not much to say, just listen to the album and it’s pretty evident, especially if you know her story well and have read her autobiography. Like Daydream, there are many genres included like dance and uses of Latin guitar. One song to the next, Butterfly is endlessly giving.

The Roof.
There's no doubt that butterfly carries for Mariah a bigger importance. The move towards an edgier sound was already there in daydream but somewhat suffocated. There's a giant step with butterfly towards the real Mariah. Of course we shouldn't forget that daydream sold 28 millions copies while Butterfly "just" 12. Mottola was not just losing his wife but it's most bankable asset that drove him to the chairmanship of Sony music
I personally like Butterfly more than Daydream. My favorite tracks of Butterfly are 'My All' & 'The Roof'.

Outside is such a forgotten gem, for me her best song off this album, and one of her best songs ever.

one of my fave tracks,shouldve been a promo single and wish it was performed live. also being different from others and part of the LGBT community i relate to this song too. makes me cry every time i listen to it. her music is really relatable and outstanding in support of being a mixed person as well. 💙💙💙

Butterfly definitely deserves the magnum opus title a lot more than Daydream. I like Daydream, but Butterfly just sounds and feels more introspective and personal and just like you said, it perfected the blend of pop and hip hop.
I became obsessed with Mariah over this album. As I was in the UK, the more R&B heavy tracks like The Roof and Breakdown weren't released as singles here except as imports and seeing the music videos on late night TV (we weren't ready for that style change in the UK it seems). It's not a hits-heavy album like her previous efforts but it's a clear evolution and maturing from Daydream and set the direction from where she'd go from there. Iconic.
Butterfly 🦋 is the blueprint for any r&b album period. These chick's today need to do their homework more and give their music more personality.
If Tommy wasn't adamant about sabotaging Butterfly Breakdown would've been another #1 single in her career

One of my favorite albums of all time. Her cover of The Beautiful Ones is perfection and Breakdown would be high on my list of the best tracks MC has ever recorded. Now I’m gonna go listen…

I love me some Mariah Carey 💕 Daydream & Butterfly are both one of my best favorite albums by her and got me through some very tough times. My favorite songs from the Butterfly album are: Honey, Butterfly, My All, The Roof, Fourth Of July, Babydoll, Breakdown, Close My Eyes, Whenever You Call, Fly Away (Butterfly Reprise), The Beautiful Ones & Outside. Basically the whole album cause it has no skips 😍😍😍💕🎶
I love the meaning of Butterfly bc Mariah wrote it as if it was Tommy telling her to spread her wings. She loved him and if he had accepted to let them live apart for a while then she’d be open to working things out. I’m glad that he was stubborn to not do that since I imagine he wouldn’t change. I like the whimsical nature of Daydream more but Butterfly is a close second. Love and sexuality is a beautiful mix when you both are present in your life and Mariah conveyed that well in Honey, The Roof and Babydoll.

Always been my fave album of hers its special because it was my first exposure to her back when I was 11 yrs old and it brings back amazing memories and the music and videos and production and lyrics and vocals are all amazing great body of work. I love the whole album

I love this album. She's always been a very mature artist. But this album was even more mature and emotional. "My All" is my favourite song of hers, "Butterfly" and "I still believe" make me cry as well
ANY song on the seminal BUTTERFLY album would be the highlight song on anybody else's R&B album!
The truth is MC never gets the credit she deserves; other artists with weaker songwriter talents get much more recognition (Lauren Hill, beyonce). Also, Mariahs vocal quality on Butterfly is exquisite and emotionally on point throughout the album. Her creativity on Breakdown, Butterfly reprise, & on 4th Of July are uniquely hers. The lyrics to Close My Eyes, Outside & Breakdown are outstanding and timeless.
Butterfly is definitely her best album to date! No question. Vocally and her ability to evolve and be free and meaningful in lyrics. She also visually delivered on each single which she hasn’t done before/after. It’s too bad only 2 singles hit #1.
Got to go back and listen to Daydream the full album but the Butterfly album is a classic both albums are classic.Get back with you on that when I go listen to the full album of Daydream
AGREE this record is great omg what an amazing body of work, vocally, lyrically and musically it’s hit after hit And it has various themes throughout the album, from joy to longing to freedom to sadness, etc.

Butterfly has that reflective and suble sound throughout the album. The hiphop tracks doesn't stand out which makes the whole listen satisfying. My favorite tracks are: The Roof, Breakdown, My All and Fourth of July.

it is her best album. and my favourite. there's not ONE skip. no fillers. it is sexy, DEEP and beyond intelligent. the roof? my fave mariah song. outside? ugh.... perfect! as a mixed race gay kid, i have to words to describe how that song helped me when i was 8, 9 y.o. and still to this day, i turn to this song when things just don't make sense... it's hard, but it's nice to listen to an old friend that's always gonna be there. this record and xtina's stripped and janet's velvet rope are my fave albums ever and oh they're heavy, but they're also fun.

I don’t prefer either. Both, out of 15 albums, are easily in my top5! I appreciate both of them for what they gave us each having deep album cuts specifically for the lambs equally as having smashing hits, developmental sound, and sweeping ballads. Mariah is a master at her craft and her discography is one of the best out there not to mention her grade A+ songwriting. I am so thankful for her music it’s helped save my life, very quite literally. Both are outstanding albums!!
